Too bad there will be no Canadians to see it. Interesting to see if it gets booed. That has pretty much stopped up here. But some people, like me, still remain seated during the Star Spangled Banner.
Our director is a brilliant guy, and I'm sure there's a backstory to it, but I don't understand why they gave us this now, for our final Maine summer concert. We played Old Orchard Beach last month, and odds are there were several (if not many) Canadians there. There might be a few in York, but likely not any more than that.

The sentiment from Mainers is that we want Canadians to come, so I don't imagine any local people booing. But it could strike people as a nice but odd gesture. Also, I bet the director will preface the song with something witty.

Why does the sheet music say "O'Canada"? O Canada is Canadian, not Irish. The anthem was written in French in 1880 as Ô Canada. Robert Stanley Weir wrote English lyrics in 1908.

By the way, we anglicize Irish surnames such as O'Dean, O'Brien, O'Reilly, O'Keefe and O'Donoghue but in Ireland the names have no apostrophe. They begin with Ô, which means "descendant of," and are followed by a space, e.g. Ô Reilly and Ô Donoghue.

Canada is clearly inferior in every way compared to a real country like ours........except one.

Your National Anthem is better. Ours is awesome and America rocks and fuck everyone else but it's really not that great. And it's melody is a ripoff of this shitty old Brit song:

This song makes me want to go do a hate crime on a Brit.

And as bad as Canada is, the Brits are way worse.

If I had my way God Bless America would be our National Anthem.

Anyway our current version is truncated. Here is the full version of The Star Spangled Banner:

Complete version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" showing spelling and punctuation from Francis Scott Key's manuscript in the Maryland Historical Society collection.

O say can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight O'er the ramparts we watch'd were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bomb bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there, O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, In full glory reflected now shines in the stream, 'Tis the star-spangled banner - O long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! And where is that band who so vauntingly swore, That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion A home and a Country should leave us no more? Their blood has wash'd out their foul footstep's pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave, And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave. O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand Between their lov'd home and the war's desolation! Blest with vict'ry and peace may the heav'n rescued land Praise the power that hath made and preserv'd us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto - "In God is our trust," And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

"Can't" and "o'er" are contractions, not abbreviations. The anthem has never been called Oh Canada – and "O'Canada" is just plain wrong. Maybe you're thinking of the movie.
You seem to think that I created, published, and printed this arrangement; and am therefore responsible for its content. I am not.

I suggest you take it up with the company that distributes Bill Moffit music arrangements. Or, you can just move on. Your choice.

I know you're all wondering what was the first number-one song with a title beginning with "O." It was George J. Gaskin's O Promise Me, recorded for New Jersey Phonograph Company and number one for eight weeks in March-April 1893. Between 1891 and 1904, Gaskin, born in Belfast, Ireland, had 31 top-ten hits and 18 number ones including Sweet Marie, After The Ball, My Wild Irish Rose, On The Banks Of The Wabash and When You Were Sweet Sixteen.

Gaskin's original recording of O Promise Me is not online but here is a version he recorded in 1898 for Columbia (#4003) – and it was retitled Oh Promise Me. Both recordings were on brown wax cylinders.

When I say "a title beginning with 'O,'" I mean "O" as a word of exclamation, not as the first letter of a word. The second "O" song to be number one was O Death, Where Is Thy Sting? by Nassau-born singer/comedian Bert Williams in January 1919.

Now that we're back to playing in Portsmouth NH tomorrow (our York ME concert was rained-out), the Canadian national anthem is off the list. Oh well. Or maybe I should say O' well.
