Interesting. I was trying to figure out the Jewish connection. Often if a name ends in "man" it's got Jewish lineage. But it might also be German or Dutch or some such. But I didn't expect a Quaker school in a Jewish neighborhood.

Wasn't Nixon a Quaker?

my growing up consisted of constantly being mocked as a dutchman while teasing all my friends about being jewish. did you have lots of jewish friends growing up? cause for me 7th grade was a yearlong party. without exaggeration, every other week of that year was either a bar or bat mitzvah service and then party. i remember being much happier when it was a reform week cause those services were quicker than the conservative ones. there were so many that my mom (the woman in the family who forced the men to go to church) didnt want me to feel left out so she had a confirmation party for me. it was a sweet gesture. i was methodist at the time and a confirmation is nowhere near as big a deal as a bar mitzvah. i remember most of the congregation was surprised to see two rows of kids show up at the church to watch me cause that really wasnt the tradition. good times. ok, thats enough reminiscing for now.

When I was that age, things weren't as fun as now. Some of the parties were good, some more serious. I do remember one where the kid's parents were very liberal and well-to-do. They were playing the Rolling Stones, and dancing like at a club. My town was maybe 20% Jewish, which is a lot, but the Italians, Irish, and what-not did a good job of harassing us, so we still felt like outsiders.

Things were much more extravagant when my daughter and her friends and my friend's kids had their bar/bat mitzvahs. It's a bigger thing today.
