People that do radio do it because they love it. I don’t know anyone that thinks that they will get rich from it. I know a couple that will be able to retire from it, but they have to have a lot of side gigs, voice commercials, and other stuff to get there.
There are a handful -- usually the morning DJs in a major market on a major station in that market -- who get a nice paycheck. But everybody else not so much. But yes the passion of the DJ is what attracts me to the DJ and one of the main reasons I still listen to FM (that an it's not as crappy as American FM) as well as satellite.

Radio DJing is not as glamorous
Yeah Stern has told a lot of stories of how bad it was for him and others until he finally broke in DC.

And WPNH FM, the station I do a daily feature for called Punch Out, originally had a PD named Annie who really liked and supported my band. She left the station and won't go back because no benefits, low pay, etc etc.

She did meet the program director of a Toronto radio station somewhere and when he found out her on air name he offered her a job if she wanted one. But she was raising a 4-5 year old son at the time and she was not a real fan of the 'lifestyle' so she declined.
But eventually she did end up in Toronto, right?

I got the call I did not want to get today. They are starting 'end-of-life' treatment. This is her choice. They will make her comfortable but regular treatment will stop as it was not effective and was contradictory, They are giving her 1-2 days to live. I will spend most of my time by her side. Will be back on when I can. Please say a prayer for her,

Damn! I'm so sorry, IRBS. You are both in my prayers. Here is a poem a family member sent to me after my wife Teri died. I printed it out and added three appropriate pictures: a sunset, a waterfall and a field of sunflowers. It is framed and hanging on a wall. I read it every day. I pray this gives you some comfort in the months and years ahead.

Remember Me

To the living, I am gone.
To the sorrowful, I will never return
To the angry, I was cheated.
But to the happy, I am at peace.
And to the faithful, I have never left.
I cannot be seen but I can be heard.
So as you stand upon a shore gazing at a beautiful sea, remember me.
As you look in awe at a mighty forest and its grand majesty, remember me.
As you look upon a flower and admire its simplicity, remember me.
Remember me in your heart, your thoughts, your memories of the times we loved, the times we cried, the times we fought, the times we laughed.
For if you always think of me, I will never be gone.

"The best you can hope for is to die in your sleep," sang Kenny Rogers in The Gambler. That is how my wife went. Perhaps that is also how Mrs IRBS went. And no matter how much we may "prepare" for the loss of a loved one, it will hurt. A lot. For a long time. I am so sorry, IRBS. I can sympathize. Gradually the pain will lessen and the happy memories will grow stronger. I am praying for strength and peace for you.

Yes, her breaths got shallower and shallower until they were no more.

I experienced that last summer with my father-in-law. It was the first time I'd ever been in the room when someone passed away. It was one of the most difficult events of my life, and sometimes even now it still replays in my head. But I don't regret it. I'm glad you could be there. Even though it's got to be even harder when it's your spouse.

Thinking of you today.

The hardest thing I have ever done is not perform CPR on her. I knew in my head it was the right call and what she wanted but it was the hardest decision to hold to ever.

I'm heartbroken for you and your family.

I was next to my dad when he took his last breaths and I can still hear them, but I can't imagine how hard it must have been for you.

Something about us being the same age is hitting me in a way where I'm at a loss for words. You've already shown so much strength over the years, being there for her. Now is the time to find strength in those around you.
