Various Thoughts

Tried to listen to the Chainsmokers interview which I had missed first time around. Could not make it through. Seemed to me that Howard spent an hour or so pretending to like EDM. I was alternately embarrassed for him and pissed at him.

I had the same experience. There are a thousand bands that are more worthy of a Stern interview than them. It's awkward when it's obvious that he's been fed all the background he's pretending to know, and that we'd be pretending to care about.

I was reading MarksFriggin's account of the first time Sour Shoes came in to the studio. Only one or two people found him funny and they ended up kicking him out!

Howard is so happy that Ryan Seacrest has a sexual harassment problem. This morning it seemed he again dismissed Seacrest as TV voice with no content. Howard cannot stand his success.

Again, we disagree on this (and Leno), but I do agree that Howard just plain made-up shit. For example, he said that Seacrest only interviewed 6 people. He did the same thing with Lorde a few weeks ago. If Howard has an enemy, he feels it's OK to lie about the person's life and success. When others do that to him, he goes apeshit.

But many people feel that Seacrest is the embodiment of a hack with a fake personality and a permanent "yuck" in his voice. There's no doubt he's a hard-working producer and on-air talent, but he annoys the shit out of me. The fact that he's responsible for the Kardashians, and is the heir-apparent to Dick Clark, says it all.

Kardashians?
Buffalo Bills Blamed For Kardashians In Hilarious New Meme

I think what annoys me about Ryan is the overnight fame thing. One moment, he's a DJ at some LA radio station. He then is the host of American Idol and the whole country is going ape over him.

I enjoyed AI. I enjoy Red Carpet events. I even enjoy the Dick Clark's Rockin New Year's Eve (recorded and excised of commercials). You do not know how good he is at doing those jobs until you see someone else doing something similar. I don't know if he picks the talent at the New Year's Eve show but it has been pretty good last two years. And one thing Seacrest does not have is a yuck in his voice. You would think Howard would appreciate his talent because they both have to think on their feet. Thing is that Seacrest is probably a lot richer than Howard and that is what sticks in Howard's craw.

We know.

Howard thinks on his feet; Seacrest reads prewritten lines with fake emotion and fake drama and fakely hyperbolic compliments.

I guarantee that has zero to do with it. See above.

"Howard thinks on his feet; Seacrest reads prewritten lines with fake emotion and fake drama and fakely hyperbolic compliments."

You must not watch him if you think all of his lines are pre-written. It's impossible in the Red Carpet setting. Even difficult in the AI setting because it is live and the performances are uneven. He is not remotely hyperbolic and not very emotional. I would say he is comparatively low key. He keeps ass kissing to minimum.

I recall that on American Idol, the show scripted fake drama (arguments, put-downs, jabs, and "situations") between Seacrest and the judges.

I watched over an hour of the E! red carpet. Seacrest was cumming in his pants over every actor's movie performance. He couldn't be any more over-the-top with the fake hyperbole. It's like each one of them cured cancer and solved world hunger while blowing him at the same time.

None of this is surprising, as his mentor was Dick Clark, the King of Fake. American Bandstand was all lip-synced, and on the Blooper show, Dick would pretend to fall-over laughing at clips that were inserted into the show after taping.

Seacrest is responsible for The Kardashians. Everything about that show perfectly represents Seacrest as a person.

I'm not telling you he has no talent, or that you shouldn't like him. It's just my observation.

Hmmm. I missed most of this year's red carpet. He might have been off his game. On AI, I liked Seacrest's interactions with the contestants and their families when they came out of the audition room. I don't know how scripted his bits with the judges were but they did not seem rehearsed to me or particularly funny. In general, AI was a lot more about the contestants than the judges unlike The Voice where the focus on the judges unfunny interplay seems to be 50% of the show. American Bandstand lip synching was bad and Dick was general adverse to spontaneity. Compare that with Ryan's version of the New Year's Eve show. They have good acts and live singing (mostly). The Kardashians is hard to excuse... Maybe I haven't given it a chance since I cannot make it through more than 5 minutes of it.

At the beginning of each Wrap Up Show, Jon "Hittemwithe" Hein always starts with "Good mornin', everybodaaaaay!' I guess one could say it's his catchphrase.

Well, since moving from a driving job (where I could listen to Stern all morning) to an office job in Sept 1999 (where I can only listen when my office mate takes a day off), I've been slowly catching up on shows. I'm up to Nov 13,2001.

He took the day off, so I started listening and it suddenly clicked with me that Howard used to (and maybe still does?) say that exact phrase quite often as HIS first line of the show, and that's probably where he got it from.

It's a petty and fairly insignificant revelation. But I figured I'd share anyway. Plus it tells me that Hein is perhaps both paying tribute to Howard, and being quite unoriginal at the same time.

I honestly have no idea how to react. You're either more dedicated than any of us or this is one good troll job. I'm not even sure how any one could get every single show that far back unless you taped everything yourself.

But you're right though...he did say those words. In the mid 90s when he was still opening to the jazz songs, he would then comment on how tired he was and then they'd go straight into a break.

I'm sure you're not spoiler-free, are you? I mean...2001...wow... That's back when Craig Gass was still sitting in on occasion, right? Jackie had recently left and they were going between Craig, Artie and I think even a couple others.

I'm also amazed by your dedication. Regarding the opening line, it's Howard mocking those "morning zoo" DJs with the "yuck-yuck" in their voices. That's why Howard does it in that high nasally voice. John Hein is just unoriginal.
