I wasn't SxE (Straight Edge). It's one of those things where you something sounds good at first, but then you realize people take it to extremes and ya go "yeaaaaaa no thanks". So I first heard it was a group/label where you don't drink or do drugs. I thought "Cool!" Then it was "and they don't smoke". And I thought "These might be my people". Then it was "and they don't do caffeine" and I went "Hmmm..." Then it was "and they're vegetarian" and I went "Uh....." Then it was "and no casual sex" and I went "NO THANKS!" I was willing to wait for the right person while I had a right person. But I heard about SxE a few years earlier and got to "no casual sex" and said, "Oh hell no!"
Whatever the opposite of straight edge was, that was me.

This was my rope swings days I've talked about. School had just gotten out so I was either biking to the arcade to play Tempest, Donkey Kong, Q-bert, Joust, etc. Or I was recording my first ever songs with friends. Or just hanging around (literally) at the rope swing across the street from my house listening to the mixtapes I'd made from taping songs off the radio or from records. If nobody was around, sometimes I'd lay in bed with comic strip books (Garfield/Peanuts, not Superman/Batman) and listen to my records with the windows open.

Little did I know in a couple months we were about to move from Portsmouth NH to Lynnfield MA.

It's been a few months since we played the game in this fun thread.

I think I was in 6th grade here cause I wouldn't be 13 until December 8th 1996 so all I remember about 6th grade is that I had to take Latin and the teacher was one of 4 teachers in my entire K through 12 education that I truly hated.

OK, so the future Mrs. Scotch and I were dating, and she had her 2 kids from her marriage, and I had my 2 or 4 kids from my marriage. I had just moved back to my house, which the ex and her boyfriend absolutely trashed. We were in the process of getting it back into livable condition. Future-Mrs. Scotch (FMS) was in a rental, which I sometimes crashed at. It was on about that date that she got creamed at an intersection by a drunk driver, and she had no insurance on her old Honda Prelude.

So I started driving her around, and it would snow almost every day. Eventually, she moved into my house, and her whole family helped get it cleaned up. My ex was hopping from place to place, and dragging the kids with her. They missed most of the school year. A few months later, our divorce was finalized, and that summer, we got dumped with all 4 of the ex and my 4 kids, plus the 2 from FMS. At the end of that summer, we filed for custody of the 2 that were mine. We got them a year later.

FMS is hilarious.

I tell Pam when we get married I look forward to calling her my ex-girlfriend. Cause she will be my current wife.

her whole family helped get it cleaned up

Good God. When you say trashed you really mean it. Have any pics of that?

Yikes. What happened with the Ex's 2?

We got them a year later.

A fairy tale ending!

It was pre-digital, and besides we would never take pictures. The basement was several feet deep in trash bags and dog shit.

They stayed with her. The younger one ended up in a juvie home. The older one lived with her family in upstate NY. She left there, he stayed.

My parents bought their house and the one directly next door when they moved to the Philly burbs. They rented the next door place to have a semi-passive income stream. We eventually moved into that house and sold the one I grew up in. I'll repeat that story hahah later.

They probably had 3 tenants from when I can remember to when we moved into that place when I was 16. 2 were awesome. One was awful. The bad one left the place a disaster. She was hot, I remember that. I was probably around 10 when she moved in and 12 when she left. (So it may count for the random day we're talking about.) I remember going into the place after she vacated and it smelled awful. There were stains all over the rug and the kitchen sink was broken.

But what I remember the most is my mom or dad opened the microwave and there was a giant piece of rotten meat in it. Clearly that woman left it on purpose to be a bitch and that was the source of the smell.

I'm sure there was a lot more damage but as a kid that's all I clearly remember.

That was a hell of a rough year.
I'm glad that it worked out well for you.

My year was much more boring, but still very stressful.
I would have been in the last couple of months of writing my thesis.

My wife was in her first year of college in New London NH. She had two roommates. One of them was gone before the end of the year. Some dude on a motorcycle would pick her up and she'd be gone for days.

I was still driving the sandwich vending route. Mon/Thu down to Rhode Island. Tue/Fri north shore (north and east of Boston). Long days, but nice having Wed off in addition to Sat/Sun.

It's a new day!

I was about to turn 9 so I was in 3rd grade.

I have good memories of 3rd grade.. Jane was my teacher ( I went to a Quaker liberal school where we called our teachers by their first names) and we would do creek walk every week where we would literally put jackets and boots on and go get to tromp around this creek in the woods behind the school. We were collecting rocks and whatever to identify when we got back to class.

If you found a garnet you won. Those were the Abington Friends School equivalent of finding gold in California in 1850.

I was in Calgary visiting my sister. This date was right after game 4 of the ALCS betwen the Jays and the As. That was the game that Roberto Alomar hit the game tying 2 run HR of Dennis Eckersley completing a comeback from down 6-1. They Jays went on to win in 11.

I was in my final year of university. December marked the end of semester 1. I had to get my 3rd science. I had Chemistry and Physics from my first year in Engineering. So I was taking Astronomy. I was taking it in the fall semester because I was told that taking it in the winter semester meant standing outside in -30c weather looking at a telescope. However, the December and late November of 1984 was an extremely cold patch. The highest daytime temperature before December 24th was -35c (-30f). Colder at night (which is when the astronomy lab was of course). So I froze my ass off.

I remember after church on Christmas Eve when I was with my family looking at lights, I convinced my dad to stop at a 7-11 so I could get a super big gulp (1.35l of coke). When I got out of the car, the air felt warm to me. Like a warm wind basking on my face. The temperature had risen to -16c (2f). It was a warm front freeing Regina, SK from the polar vortex (they didn't use those terms then but that is what it was). Temps were reasonably mild for the rest of December (-9c 20f). Of course Astronomy was done.
