I need to make a clarification – and you all know I'm not the clarifier I used to be. Joel Whitburn's Top Pop Singles, 1955-2018 book (available from his Record Research website) credits the Statler Brothers as the backing vocalists on Daddy Sang Bass, a 1968 number-one country hit and #42 pop hit by Johnny Cash. On this list I show the artists as "Johnny Cash/Statler Brothers." Actually, only two of the Statler Brothers are featured. Cash sings "Daddy sang bass," then Jan Howard sings "Mama sang tenor" and Don Reid and Lew DeWitt sing "Me and little brother would join right in there," a reference to Johnny's brother Jack, who died when Johnny was 12. You can find the details online. It's gruesome.

Here is a live performance from the January 28 1970 episode of The Johnny Cash Show:

Woman by Peter & Gordon was written by Paul McCartney and reached #14 in March 1966. When I was doing all the copying and pasting of the list, it was at the top of a section and I somehow cut it. Oops! Here are four more additions:

Born Free - Hesitations (39/1968)
I Can’t Grow Peaches On A Cherry Tree – Just Us (34/1966)
I’m Comin’ Home Cindy – Trini Lopez (39/1966)
If A Woman Answers – Leroy Van Dyke (35/1962)

Just Us was Chip Taylor and Al Gorgoni. Taylor, born James Wesley Voight, wrote Wild Thing, Angel Of The Morning, I Can't Let Go, Make Me Belong To You, Son Of A Rotten Gambler and many other hits and had five country hits in the 1970s. Gorgoni was a session guitarist who played on Sherry, Big Girls Don't Cry, I'm A Believer, Sugar Sugar, Leader Of The Pack and several other 1960s hits.

We can add this one by Bettye Swann. She is best known for her 1967 #21 hit Make Me Yours. Her remake of Jeannie Seely's 1966 #2 country hit Don't Touch Me reached #38 on the Hot 100 in April 1969.

Today I heard Bobby Darin's Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey. It reached #19 in July 1960 – and it wasn't on the list. The song, originally titled Bill Bailey, Won't You Please Come Home?, was written by Hugh Cannon and has been recorded by more than 340 artists including Brenda Lee, Jimmy Durante, Pearl Bailey, Teresa Brewer, Julie London, Eydie Gormé, Della Reese, James Brown, Connie Francis, Wayne Newton, Sarah Vaughan and Tennessee Ernie Ford. Here is the original version by Arthur Collins from 1902:

Another addition: Gravy (For My Mashed Potatoes), Dee Dee Sharp's follow-up to Mashed Potato Time, reached #9 on the Hot 100 in July 1962. Both songs, as well as five other Dee Dee Sharp chart hits, were co-written by Dave Appell and Kal Mann. They also co-wrote Chubby Checker's Let's Twist Again, the Dovells' Bristol Stomp and the Orlons' South Street.

Dave and Kal wrote "Gravy For My Mashed Potatoes" and "Let's Twist Again", both follow-ups to big hits. Here's a list of some other songs they wrote:

"I Wanna Hold Your Hand Again Tomorrow"
"This Grapevine Has More Grapes On It Today"
"I Finally Got Some Satisfaction"
"Are You Still Lonesome?"
"It's Tomorrow, So You Do Still Love Me?"
"In The Year 2526"

Another song to add. Don't Give Up was Petula Clark's 15th consecutive – and final – top-40 US hit. It reached #37 on the Hot 100 in August 1968.

Here is another addition. Just A Little, the B-side of Brenda Lee's number-one hit I Want To Be Wanted, reached #40 in October 1960. It was written by Betty Logan, who released 14 singles between 1953 and 1967, including three as half of the duo Chuck [Simmons] & Betty and two with her sister Christine (as The Logan Sisters).

Actually I said I can't guarantee there are no missing songs – and I continue to hear songs during countdown shows and on Peter Noone's Something Good program which are not on the list. It will never be complete. I need to find somebody willing to maintain the list after I die. I don't want it to die with me.

I have no idea why this one was not on the list. It reached #21 in September 1965 and is played several times a week:

This is embarrassing. The Doors' 1968 #3 hit Touch Me is not on the list. Maybe I subconsciously omitted it because I don't like the bad grammar: "Till the stars fall from the sky for you and I." Yikes! We can also add Tony Bennett's 1963 #18 hit The Good Life. Here is audio of a 1969 live performance of Touch Me by the Doors. Morrison sings "Till the stars fall from the sky, you and I." I guess that's one way to avoid the bad grammar.

Seven more additions, all from April-May 1964 and heard on a countdown show. I can see I will eventually have to post an expanded version of the list.

Charade - Sammy Keye (36/1964)
I Don't Want To Be Hurt Anymore - Nat "King" Cole (22/1964)
I'm So Proud - Impressions (14/1964)
Shangri-La - Vic Dana (27/1964)
Shangri-La – Robert Maxwell (15/1964)
Whenever He Holds You - Bobby Goldsboro (39/1964)
Wish Someone Would Care - Irma Thomas (17/1964)

Another addition. Jessie Hill released 15 singles between 1960 and 1973. The first, Ooh Poo Pah Doo, reached #28 in May 1960. His second single, Whip It On Me was on the Hot 100 for only one week, at #91. He never had another hit. In April 1962, he released Can't Get Enough Of That Ooh Poo Pah Doo. As it turns out, people did have enough of it.

"Oh no! Don't tell me!" Yes, I found another big hit missing from the list. Black Is Black reached #4 in September 1966 and was Los Bravos' only top-40 hit.
In June 1968, Bring A Little Lovin' peaked at #51 nationally but got to #13 on the Boss 30 of KHJ in Los Angeles.

Los Bravos formed in 1965 in Madrid. Lead singer Mike Kogel was born in Germany. The other members were Miguel Danus, Pablo Gómez, Manuel Fernández and Antonio Martínez. In 1972, calling himself Mike Kennedy, Kogel had a #62 hit with Louisianna. The song got to #10 on the KHJ Boss 30 – and yes, the name of the state was misspelled on the label.
