2. SUSSUDIO – PHIL COLLINS

A friend of mine has a 17 year old son who listens to the VJ each week. Last weekend, my friend had me and his son each try to guess which song would be #1. His son picked "Sussudio". I picked "Summer Of '69" (which was #55 this week, and never made it to #1). His son totally kicked my ass.

1. HEAVEN – BRYAN ADAMS

Dammit! I got the artist right but not the song!

Top 3 songs are all #1 hits.

Won't reach the top 40
#42 Gino Vanelli "Black Cars"
#44 John Fogerty "Centerfield"
#58 Hooters "All You Zombies"
#59 Weird Al "Like A Surgeon"

A bit surprised at all these except weird al as he didn’t generally chart even though he should have.

@Aaron I've always loved "Italian Girls" (John Oates' on lead) from H20. I also like "Starting All Over Again" and "Someday We'll Know" which have them both taking turns. But a couple years ago, Oates teamed up with a local (Boston) folk rocker named Adam Ezra and made this amazing song (plus two others) where they both sing. I think it's absolutely incredible:

@Channel98 Joely? I wonder why Phil named his daughter Joely.

Ooh, Mister sadchild gave me a hashtag! I will guard it with my life – and that's putting it pretty cheaply. Joely Collins was named by her mother, not by Phil. Here is today's history lesson:

Phil Collins has been married and divorced three times. His first wife was Andrea Bertorelli, whom he had met in 1965 when they were attending a West London drama school. They dated for several years until Andrea moved to Vancouver, British Columbia to be with her mother. Andrea gave birth to daughter Joely in 1972. She has never identified the father. Andrea took Joely and returned to London, where she married Collins in 1975. Collins then legally adopted Joely. After Phil and Andrea divorced in 1980, Andrea and Joely returned to Vancouver, where Joely began an acting career. Among her many television and movie appearances, she co-starred in 52 episodes of the 1990s Canadian tv series Madison.

The name Joely is a variation of Joelle, the feminine equivalent of the Hebrew name Joel (יוֹאֵל), which means "Jehovah is God."

31. MISUNDERSTANDING - GENESIS

Like I've said previously, I've been on a big late 70s/early 80s Genesis kick. But this one, not so much.

"Follow You Follow Me", "Turn It On Again", "Abacab", "No Reply At All", "Man On The Corner", "Paperlate", "Mama", "That's All", "Home By The Sea", "Just A Job To Do" and "Illegal Alien" - I've been listening to those ones religiously for months.

23. TAKE YOUR TIME (DO IT RIGHT) - SOS BAND

Hook's okay. The rest sucks.

19. SHOULD'VE NEVER LET YOU GO - NEIL & DARA SEDAKA

13. SHE'S OUT OF MY LIFE - MICHAEL JACKSON

Tito pass me a tissue. Jermaine stop teasing. #eddiemurphy

4. IT'S STILL ROCK & ROLL TO ME - BILLY JOEL

Okay, this was my second week up against my friend's 17-year old son. He picked this as his guess for the number one song. I picked "Another One Bites The Dust", which wasn't even in the Hot 100 - it didn't hit #1 until October. It's pretty sad when a kid who didn't even live through the 80s has kicked my ass TWICE now....

3. THE ROSE - BETTE MIDLER

....I had narrowed down my choices to three options. "Another One Bites The Dust", "Never Be The Same" and "The Rose". If only I'd gone with that third choice!!

#83 Tony Joe White "I Get Off On It"

Disco and blues mashed together (which is weird enough) with some really out-there lyrics that I wouldn't have expected to hit any chart whatsoever back in 1980.

I met a pretty girl who really turned me on
But we didn't make it very far
It's hard to make love to a lady
When she's munching on a candy bar

There was a pretty thing in Los Angeles
But she was a man in women's clothes
I told him he was dressing kinda dangerous
'Cause how's a fool like me gonna know

There is a dude up in New York City
He wears nothing but a raincoat and he walks around
He comes up on to a lady looking pretty
And he gives her just glimpse from the waist down

There was a girl I had a lot of fun with
'Til she asked me to her house one night
And when she told me she was into bondage
Well don't you know it nearly blew my mind

Won't make the top 40
#42 Glen Campbell/Rita Coolidge "Somethin' 'Bout You Baby I Like"
#44 Cheap Trick "Everything Works If You Let It"
#45 Invisible Man's Band "All Night Thing"
#51 Player "It's For You"
#52 Stephanie Mills "Sweet Sensation"
#55 Gladys Knight & the Pips "Landlord"
#57 Queen "Play The Game"
#60 Average White Band "Let's Go Round Again"
#61 Kiss "Shandi"
#62 Russ Ballard "On The Rebound"
#63 Billy Preston/Syreeta Wright "One More Time for Love"
#65 Pretenders "Stop Your Sobbing"
#67 Herb Alpert "Beyond"
#71 Gary Burband with Band McNally "Who Shot JR?"

Geez if there was ever a song that deserved the Beavis and Butthead, it was this lame song.

I like that era of Genesis music too. If Follow You Follow Me is on, I'll always listen.

We also know Alan will always make a comment during a 1980 countdown about the good, the bad, and the ugly that was pre-MTV radio.
As if the bad and ugly songs ceased to be made after MTV was born.

Russ Ballard was a member of Unit Four Plus Two for a short time but he joined the group in 1967, two years after after they had a number-one UK hit and #28 US hit with Concrete & Clay. From 1969 to 1974, Ballard was a member of Argent. He sang lead on their biggest hit, Hold Your Head Up, which reached #5 in both the US and UK in 1972. Argent's first single, released by Date Records in November 1969, was written by Ballard but it never charted. Three Dog Night would have a #7 hit with the song in 1971. Here is the original version of Liar. Honest!

@HecticArt Yeah I agree "Time To Fly" shoulda made the top 40 (even though I don't like it anymore). It only reached #56 in 1978. It was reissued in 1980 and peaked lower at #77. The only other song I could see making the top 40 is Queen's "Play The Game". It peaked at #42, I guess that's fair?

As for The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, I'm pretty sure everyone knows this already, but just in case. Clint Eastwood starred in the film The Good, The Bad & The Ugly in 1968, but it was released on home video in 1980. Also, the theme song from the movie was used in a cigarette commercial in 1980. So it's a reference to something that was popular in the early 80s. Even Eddie Murphy referenced the theme song in his 1983 comedy special Delirious. So that's why Alan says it for those 80/81/82 countdowns (in case there was somebody who didn't know the reason).

Time FMTF isn't one that's held my attention for the last 25 years or so, but it's got staying power. It's still all over classic rock FM stations.

I would have pictured Play the Game as peaking at about 60.
