WHOA THE SITE LOOKS VERY DIFFERENT!

Anyway...

Good 22
Okay 4
Bad 14

39. ROCK 'N' ROLL IS KING - ELO

Makes me wanna do the twist and the mashed potato.

35. STOP IN THE NAME OF LOVE - THE HOLLIES

Why??

20. SWEET DREAMS (ARE MADE OF THIS) - EURYTHMICS

This was the third week of me vs my friend's son (a 17 year old) trying to guess the #1 song. This song was my choice - my best guess yet...

17. ALL THIS LOVE - DEBARGE

849ec66b71f5b46eaaf54fdc6fd56492.jpg

1. EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE - THE POLICE

...aaaaand my friend's son picked this one. Him 3. Me 0.

The scary part is he picked this last Sunday and said it was 'so easy'. I spent several days narrowing it down from 12 to 8 potential choices. All 7 of my other guesses were horrible:

"Beat It" PEAKED IN APRIL (#24 this week)
"Billie Jean" PEAKED IN MARCH
"Human Nature" PEAKED IN SEPTEMBER / NEVER REACHED #1
"Total Eclipse Of The Heart" PEAKED IN OCTOBER
"Making Love Out Of Nothing At All" PEAKED IN NOVEMBER / NEVER REACHED #1
"All Night Long" PEAKED IN NOVEMBER
"Uptown Girl" PEAKED IN NOVEMBER / NEVER REACHED #1

#65 Lee Greenwood "IOU"

The beginning of this video looks like it was shot on the set of Sesame Street. And it goes downhill from there.

#85 Toto "Waiting For Your Love"

This was on the same album as "Africa" and "Rosanna"?? Sounds like Kool & The Gang.

Won't reach the top 40
#45 James Ingram/Patti Austin "How Do You Keep The Music Playing"
#52 Crosby Stills & Nash "War Games"
#53 Red Rockers "China"
#54 Joe Walsh "Space Age Whiz Kids"
#56 Louise Tucker "Midnight Blue"
#57 Mtume "Juicy Fruit"
#58 Red Rockers "China"
#64 Roman Holliday "Stand By"
#65 Lee Greenwood "IOU"
#71 Goanna "Solid Rock"
#73 Smokey Robinson "Blame It on Love"
#75 Thomas Dolby "Europa And The Pirate Twins"
#77 Meco "Ewok Celebration"
#78 Donnie Iris "Do You Compute?"
#79 Al Jarreau "Boogie Down"
#80 New Edition "Candy Girl"

#82 Robert Palmer "You Are In My System"

17. ALL THIS LOVE - DEBARGE

849ec66b71f5b46eaaf54fdc6fd56492.jpg

In the car my son asked me why I was listening to this song when I was complaining about it. I told him it was a countdown. He rolled his eyes at me. He said it was bad enough to change anyways.

I was debating with myself whether it would be this song or "4. NEVER GONNA LET YOU GO - SERGIO MENDES" which would get the bevis & butthead meme. I think you could have gone either way.

Won't reach the top 40
#77 Meco "Ewok Celebration"

No surprises here. For the Meco song, I would think by this time Meco would have realized that people would be sick of their star wars mimicry. Talk about a one trick pony artist.

@IdRatherBeSkiing I did debate between Debarge and Sergio actually! Ultimately the Sergio song is only pretty bad. That Debarge song has no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

I did like that Ewok Celebration when I was 12. In fact, it may be the first uh, rap?, song I ever heard? Though C3PO talking over a beat hardly qualifies as rap. However, I've discovered lately that there were quite a few novelty-style 'rap' songs that came out in the early 80s. Even Mel Brooks got in on the action.

"Oh yeah, I'm tellin' ya, there were a lot of novelty-style rap songs in the early '80s. I even did one myself. I'm tellin' ya, I get no respect. No respect. I took my rap song to the local radio station and they told me it was so bad, they'd rather play the label. But maybe you will like it. Probably not, though, I get no respect. No respect at all."

I bet you won't like this one. The 1987 Dragnet movie was loosely based – very loosely based – on the 1951-59/1967-70 television series. City Of Crime, a rap song by Tom Hanks and Dan Aykroyd, played during the closing credits. Hanks and Aykroyd made a video for the song. The video got a lot of play on MTV. Enjoy!

Or not.

It may sound crazy but I actually like that song a lot. I used to listen to it a lot back then, and I have it in my mp3 collection. I really like the movie too.

Here's another one that's barely rap (like the C3PO one) but has a similar novelty/comedy vibe that I liked back then and still like now.

Here's one I discovered while looking through the songs that will never make the top 40. Now THIS one is quite bad IMO.

There was another bad Reagan rap too, came out before this one I think. But I can't remember the name of it.

I like this tune too. Don't get me wrong, it's bad, but it's great. It works because they are just having fun with it.
Glen Hughes (of Deep Purple and Black Sabbath) teamed up to do the song with them.
I look forward to hearing it when the movie is on.

The group that became the Temptations evolved from the Cavaliers, a doo-wop quartet formed in 1957. They later became the Primes, then the Distants, then the Elgins (not to be confused with the Elgins who sang Heaven Must Have Sent You.) The Temptations signed with Motown in 1961. Their first two singles on the Miracle label failed to chart. Their third single, on Gordy, was an R&B hit but didn't make the pop chart. Berry Gordy Jr. wrote Do You Love Me. He felt it would be a huge hit for the Temptations.......and the Contours wound up recording it. The song reached number one on the R&B chart and #3 on the Hot 100 in 1962 and became a hit again in 1988 after appearing on the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. The Temptations would get their first big hit in 1964 with The Way You Do The Things You Do.

Do You Love Me has been recorded by more than 60 artists and groups, including Chubby Checker/Dee Dee Sharp, the Miracles, Tremeloes, Flamingos, Supremes, Hollies, Gentrys, Kingsmen, Dave Clark Five, Paul Revere & the Raiders.......and this television actor famous for Knight Rider and Baywatch:

Good 15
Okay 7
Bad 18

Quite good for an 88.

39: TROUBLE – NIA PEEPLES

Was this the extended 12" remix. It pretended to be ending again and again. I couldn't wait for it to.

36: MONKEY – GEORGE MICHAEL

My son said "I know who this is. Frankie Goes To Hollywood".

30: TOGETHER FOREVER – RICK ASTLEY

My friend's son chose this song for his guess at the #1 for this countdown. As soon as I heard this, I thought "I might have a chance this week". Did I win? Was my choice even on the Hot 100 this week? Read on...

28: I SHOULD BE SO LUCKY – KYLIE MINOGUE

"Kylie Minogue officially holds the record for the most singles at # 1 in the 21 year history of the ARIA chart with a total of nine." I don't know if this is old information (the page isn't dated) but deal lord I don't think she's made a song I like in the slightest.

24: DO YOU LOVE ME – THE CONTOURS

Back in the 80s it was rare for old songs to re-chart. Now look at the Hot 100 in December. It's loaded with old Christmas songs. Very stupid. The Hot 100 has been broken for over a decade. Since the week "Harlem Shake" shot to #1, to be specific - that's when they made a bunch of awful changes to how it's calculated.

#6 Mariah "All I Want For Xmas"
#15 Bobby Helms "Jingle Bell Rock"
#18 Brenda Lee "Rockin' Around The Xmas Tree"
#21 Burl Ives "A Holly Jolly Christmas"
#24 Nat King Cole "The Xmas Song"
#27 Gene Autrey "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer"
#31 Wham "Last Xmas"
etc etc

20: MAKE IT REAL – THE JETS

849ec66b71f5b46eaaf54fdc6fd56492.jpg

19: 1-2-3 – GLORIA ESTEFAN AND MIAMI SOUND MACHINE

I remember an interview with Plain White T's back in 2008 (can't seem to find it online anymore) where the singer said he thought his song "1, 2, 3, 4" was original because people hadn't used numbers in a song about love ever before. Yeah, okay...

6: ROLL WITH IT – STEVE WINWOOD

I won! This was my guess at the #1 song this week. I remember this song being huge in summer of '88 and me being disappointed because even though it's an okay song, it's worse than every song on his previous album Back In The High Life, which I loved.

5: HOLD ON TO THE NIGHTS – RICHARD MARX
1: THE FLAME – CHEAP TRICK

These were the songs I almost chose. I was pretty close to nabbing the top spot!

I'll have to do the 'Will never make...' thing later. I'm not at home right now so I don't have access to my files.
