2: BETTE DAVIS EYES - KIM CARNES

I chose this one. I figured what are the odds THIS week will be the one week 'Stars On 45' interrupts Kim's run...

1: STARS ON 45 MEDLEY - STARS ON 45

At least one of the others picked this one.

#57 Joe Dolce "Shaddap You Face"

Story behind the song. It's a bit of a read, but I find it interesting.

After a decade without success in the music business, Joe Dolce moved to Australia with his then-wife and they came up with a mixed cabaret act that included an Italian character named Giuseppe. It is as Giuseppe that Dolce sings the novelty song “Shaddap You Face”.

Its lyrics came from combining as many of the phrases his Italian-American family used to say into one song. Originally it was not a sing-along but when a drunken crowd began doing so at a small venue, Dolce regularly incorporated crowd participation into it.

In April 1980, after Dolce had split from his wife, he was given a $2000 grant by the Australian Film Commission for a test segment of his one-man act. He recorded “Shaddaup You Face” in a studio and made a music video to accompany it, then shopped it to record labels. Eventually Astor Records was interested and released it. A morning breakfast show aired the song and was immediately bombarded with phone calls, leading to a TV performance on the very popular The Don Lane Show that sparked the song’s spread across Australia.

Over the next several months, the song became an international smash hit, topping music charts around the world in early 1981 – first Australia, then New Zealand, Ireland, Canada, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France and the UK.

#109 Billy Ocean "Night" - (peaked at #103, #7 R&B)
#110 Robert Winters and Fall "Magic Man" - (peaked at #101, #11 R&B)

Comment:
• "It Hurts to be in Love" is the only song that broke the 100.
• "Pull Up To The Bumper” spent six weeks at #101.
• Billy Ocean "Night" is also titled as "Nights (Feel Like Getting Down)"
• Robert Winters and Fall (no Wiki page). I'm surprised because there's quite a bit written about Robert Winters here: 40 Years Ago: “Magic Man” Robert Winters overcame disability and made the greatest R&B ballad of an era. I remembered the song once I played it.

I'm always happy to see Rush on the charts, but their 40s appearances were rare, so I (unfortunately) don't get surprised.
63 & 81 were popular, but seem like they shouldn't have peaked much higher to me.
