I had posted the top 39 songs of 1981 missing the #28 song. It is now added. It does not affect my counts in any way.

(32) 28. DON"T GIVE IT UP - ROBBIE PATTON

Last week there were 15 chart-toppers in the Hot 100 (1989), this week only 6. They musta made some kinda change to the chart between '81 and '89.

Kim Carnes "Bette Davis Eyes" #22
Stars On 45 "Stars On 45" #52
Air Supply "The One That You Love" #12
Rick Springfield "Jesse's Girl" #4
Diana/Lionel "Endless Love" #1

Christopher Cross "Best That You Can Do" #71

white: listed as 'earlier' or 'later'
green: my candidates
brown: missing from my list

I messed up THREE songs on my full list of 1981 chart-toppers:
Kenny Rogers "Lady" [NOPE... FIRST #1 OF '81 WAS JUST LIKE STARTING OVER]
Vangelis "Chariots Of Fire" [NOPE... 1982]
Hall & Oates "Maneater" [NOPE... PRIVATE EYES]

1981 was a different year than any other year in the 80s. It had 3 songs taking #1 spot for 9 weeks each (although Physical stretched into 1982). I think longer #1 durations were slightly more common in the 70s but not with so many songs with so long each.

Good 12
Okay 3
Bad 25

35: DON'T WANT TO WAIT ANYMORE - THE TUBES

See 'Two Hit Wonder' thread...

34: EVERLASTING LOVE - REX SMITH AND RACHEL SWEET

Adding Rex to 'Two Hit Wonder' thread...

25: THE BREAKUP SONG - GREG KIHN BAND

Uh-uh uhhh uh-uh uh-uh uhhh

16: TOUCH ME WHEN WE'RE DANCING - THE CARPENTERS

beavis

4: JESSIE'S GIRL - RICK SPRINGFIELD

My guess.

1: ENDLESS LOVE - DIANA ROSS AND LIONEL RICHIE

At least one of the other two picked this one. I actually had "Endless Love" typed into my phone, then backspaced it and put "Jesse's Girl" instead. D'oh!

#45 Point Blank "Nicole"

This song will peak at #39 soon, and I don't think we've ever heard it. Maybe in addition to tracking the #40s we haven't heard yet, we should add in the #39s they haven't aired?

#86 Larry John McNally "Just Like Paradise"

No Wikipedia page. From Songfacts:

"A great songwriter that went under the radar." That's how Bonnie Raitt describes Larry John McNally in a recent interview with USA Today. But while Larry may prefer to stay out of the limelight, there's nothing "under the radar" about the artists who've recorded his songs: The Eagles ("I Love to Watch a Woman Dance"), Rod Stewart ("The Motown Song"), Joe Cocker ("Long Drag Off A Cigarette"), Chaka Khan ("Sleep on It" and "A Woman in a Man's World"), Don Henley ("For My Wedding") and, of course, the aforementioned Raitt ("Nobody's Girl" and "Slow Ride"), to name a humble few.

Will not get into the top 40
#41 Gino Vannelli "Nightwalker"
#42 Blackfoot "Fly Away"
#48 Jefferson Starship "Stranger"
#57 Mickey Gilley "You Don't Know Me"
#58 Teena Marie "Square Biz"
#59 Don Felder "Heavy Metal"
#63 Squeeze "Tempted"
#65 Santana "The Sensitive Kind"
#68 Pure Prairie League "You're Mine Tonight"
#69 Icehouse "We Can Get Together"
#73 Art Garfunkel "A Heart In New York"
#75 Debbie Harry "Backfired"
#77 Bernadette Peters "Dedicated To The One I Love"
#78 Cheryl Lynn "Shake It Up Tonight"
#79 Tom Petty "A Woman In Love"
#80 Nielsen/Pearson "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore"
#81 Andy Gibb "All I Have to Do Is Dream"
#82 Rush "Tom Sawyer"
#83 Don McLean "It's Just the Sun"
#86 Larry John McNally "Just Like Paradise"
#88 Deniece Willians "Silly"
#89 Change "Hold Tight"
#90 Sad Cafe "La-Di-Da"
#91 Styx "Nothing Ever Goes As Planned"
#94 Debra Laws "Very Special"
#96 Gary US Bonds "Jole Blon"
#97 Stars On 45 "Medley II"
#98 Gary O "Pay You Back With Interest"
#99 Mac Davis "Secrets"

You can blame SXM for this one. If they had done what they do 99.999% of the time, you would have been right. This time they went with a 'future' dated countdown.

59. Probably did better on rock charts. Still heard today on rock stations.
63. This week's true surprise
82. It's not a surprise but I just have to list it each time. You Americans are nuts.

Interesting stuff!

"Just Like Paraside" was at #101 two weeks prior: Aug 2, 2021. I erroneously stated it peaked. I didn't have the Joel Whitburn book yet so more the work was manual. It stayed at #86 for another week then fell off the chart.

  • I thought the "Our Lips are Sealed" peaked higher.
  • It's interesting to see three songs that charted on the Country chat this week.

Tom Jones' What In The World's Come Over You was a remake of a 1960 Jack Scott hit. Scott had three big hits on Carlton Records in 1958-59: My True Love, Leroy and Goodbye Baby. He wrote all three. On November 25, 1959, he recorded another song he had written, What In The World's Come Over You. It was his first single for Top Rank Records and peaked at #5 in February 1960. Wanda Jackson, best known for her 1960s country hits Right Or Wrong, In The Middle Of A Heartache and Tears Will Be The Chaser For Your Wine, recorded the song in 1982 for her album Let's Have A Party.

It's songs like this that give that joke it's merit:
Q: What happens when you play a country song backwards?
A: You get back your girl and your truck
or something like that.
