I did the Bubbles for the previous week. Back to the drawing board....They went with a future week which is unusual.
This song is not tolerable at all.1 channel changer @ #1.
"Very Special" was on the Bubbling Under chart the week before at #103.1981/08/15
red = debut
The bottom 60: debuts and/or future or former #1s
(--) 94. VERY SPECIAL - DEBRA LAWS
"La-Di-Da" was on the Bubbling Under chart the week before at #102.(--) 90. LA-DI-DA - SAD CAFE
"Silly" was on the Bubbling Under chart the week before at #108.(--) 88. SILLY - DENIECE WILLIAMS
1981 was a different year than any other year in the 80s. It had 3 songs taking #1 spot for 9 weeks each (although Physical stretched into 1982). I think longer #1 durations were slightly more common in the 70s but not with so many songs with so long each.Last week there were 15 chart-toppers in the Hot 100 (1989), this week only 6. They musta made some kinda change to the chart between '81 and '89.
You can blame SXM for this one. If they had done what they do 99.999% of the time, you would have been right. This time they went with a 'future' dated countdown.4: JESSIE'S GIRL - RICK SPRINGFIELD
My guess.
1: ENDLESS LOVE - DIANA ROSS AND LIONEL RICHIE
At least one of the other two picked this one. I actually had "Endless Love" typed into my phone, then backspaced it and put "Jesse's Girl" instead. D'oh!
59. Probably did better on rock charts. Still heard today on rock stations. Will not get into the top 40
#59 Don Felder "Heavy Metal"
#63 Squeeze "Tempted"
#82 Rush "Tom Sawyer"
Pretty much my same reaction for all 3 songs.59. Probably did better on rock charts. Still heard today on rock stations.
63. This week's true surprise
82. It's not a surprise but I just have to list it each time. You Americans are nuts.
It peaked at #5 on the Top Tracks chart (US Mainstream Rock).59. Probably did better on rock charts. Still heard today on rock stations.
Interesting stuff!#86 Larry John McNally "Just Like Paradise"
No Wikipedia page. From Songfacts:
"A great songwriter that went under the radar." That's how Bonnie Raitt describes Larry John McNally in a recent interview with USA Today. But while Larry may prefer to stay out of the limelight, there's nothing "under the radar" about the artists who've recorded his songs: The Eagles ("I Love to Watch a Woman Dance"), Rod Stewart ("The Motown Song"), Joe Cocker ("Long Drag Off A Cigarette"), Chaka Khan ("Sleep on It" and "A Woman in a Man's World"), Don Henley ("For My Wedding") and, of course, the aforementioned Raitt ("Nobody's Girl" and "Slow Ride"), to name a humble few.
It's songs like this that give that joke it's merit:#110 Glen Campbell "I Love My Truck" (entered the Hot 100 on 8/22/81 at #96, peaked at #94, #15 Country). Was at #110 the previous week.
Go-Gos "Our Lips are Sealed"
Speaking of old jokes...
Why can't the Go-Gos have children?
