27. WHO CAN IT BE NOW - MEN AT WORK

Just read this interesting tidbit recently from Colin Hay:

There were some people living next door who were moving a bit of product. Mistakes were made, and people would knock on our door looking for some kind of stimulant, and we didn’t have it. You were always hearing people banging on other people’s doors. We had one of those little spy holes, and I was always creeping toward the door when someone was knocking, to see who it was. I was never sure I wanted to open the door.
I hadn't heard that one before. It's a cool story.

:laughcry:
16. LOVE IS IN CONTROL - DONNA SUMMER

That outfit Summer wears in the video is hefty! hefty! hefty! Too bad the song is so wimpy wimpy wimpy...

Will never make the top 40:
#47 Missing Persons "Words"
#85 Cheap Trick "If You Want My Love"
I would have thought that both of these would have been closer to the top 20.

Not only was "Dreams" higher-charting than "Hold Me", but so was "Don't Stop" at #3.

Fleetwood Mac Chart History

I can only assume he was talking about the aggregate of 7 weeks @ #4 > Dreams 1 week @ #1 or Don't Stop's stay @ #3. I think he should have clarified.

Will never make the top 40:
#50 April Wine "Enough Is Enough"
This is a cool song. Following up their earlier success on the previous album I am surprised it didn't do better in the USA.

#99 Reddings "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay"
I can only assume this is a remake because I am sure the original did pretty good but I think it was early 70s.

Hard to believe this was their biggest hit. It is a great song but there are better ones from the 70s.

I listened again tonight and Goodman actually says "one of their biggest hits". I heard it the first time as just their biggest. It was indeed one of their biggest although if you think of big Fleetwood Mac hits this would probably be down on the list.

Nothing to say about the top 40 I haven't already said.

#52 Quiet Riot "Mama, Weer All Crazee Now"

I bought this album back in the day. Yep, I was the one...

#59 Elvis Costello "The Only Flame In Town"

With Daryl Hall goodness!

#79 Newcleus "Jam On It"

The 9th rap song to ever appear on the Hot 100.

#83 Bonnie Tyler "Here She Comes"

Hearing it for the first time now. Guitar riff reminds me of Joan Jett's cover of "Crimson And Clover".

#88 Cherelle "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On"

Improved upon greatly by Robert Palmer two years later.

#95 Queen "It's A Hard Life"

Freddie's costume in the video. EYE don't even know what to say...

I started becoming a fan to more sophisticated pop like Swing Out Sister around 1991 but the Manhattan Transfer probably got me started on the kick

The whole 3-minute clip available to hear here.

Only liked 2 songs in the lower half of the countdown. So much crapola!

15. HERE I GO AGAIN - WHITESNAKE

Just auditioned a singer who chose this as a song to showcase his vocals (so the band had to learn how to play it). We have people choose 2 songs they are already comfortable singing, and 2 of our songs.

13. I WANT YOUR SEX - GEORGE MICHAEL

George Michael stopped performing this song after 1989. In 2008, he told the LA Times that he hates the song and described it as “bad Prince”. I learned that today because my curiosity led me to write a full bio of the song on genius.com.

4. LUKA - SUZANNE VEGA

My roomate and I lived on the 6th floor of a building. On the floor below us, there was a guy from Sweden named Ilka. We used to sing "My name is Ilka, I live on the fifth floor. I live downstairs from you. Yes, I think you've seen me before" to him.

#86 Def Leppard "Women"

Hard to believe there was a time when Hysteria was considered a failure. Here's an interesting read.

Excerpts: "Cliff Burnstein was scared that we’d lose rock credibility in America if we put kind of a pop single out first, so we put 'Women' out ... It was generally considered to be a disappointment and the record was generally considered to be a failure ... The first single didn’t do well and we were very concerned ... The label was scared as hell [after “Women” and then “Animal” didn’t take off in the US] ... People were telling us we had a stiff album and we turned it around on them. We went seven singles in and our biggest singles were singles four and five."

Will never make the top 40
#43 38 Special "Back To Paradise"
#49 Pointer Sisters "Be There"
#60 Yello "Oh Yeah"
#61 Hooters "Johnny B"
#62 INXS "Good Times"

#75 Cure "Why Can't I Be You"
#83 John Waite "These Times Are Hard For Lovers"
#86 Def Leppard "Women"
#87 Great White "Rock Me"
#88 Ray Parker Jr "I Don't Think That Man Should Sleep Alone"
#95 Depeche Mode "Strangelove"
