38. I'M GONNA TEAR YOUR PLAYHOUSE DOWN - PAUL YOUNG
36. NO LOOKIN' BACK - MICHAEL MCDONALD
35. FOUR IN THE MORNING - NIGHT RANGER
34. LIFE IN ONE DAY - HOWARD JONES

26. EVERY STEP OF THE WAY - JOHN WAITE
25. C-I-T-Y - JOHN CAFFERTY AND THE BEAVER BROWN BAND

16. FREEWAY OF LOVE - ARETHA FRANKLIN
12. INVINCIBLE - PAT BENATAR
11. DARE ME - THE POINTER SISTERS
7. POP LIFE - PRINCE AND THE REVOLUTION

This countdown was LOADED with second-rate, forgotten hits from artists with much better songs. I haven't heard any of these more than twice in the last 25+ years (some not at all).

39. HEAD OVER HEELS - TEARS FOR FEARS

Just gonna leave this here.

29. I'M GOIN DOWN - BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN

Hey Bruce, could you say the phrase "I'm goin down" another 15 trillion times? Sheesh!

28. I GOT YOU BABE - UB40 WITH CHRISSIE HYDE

Why??

19. CRY - GODLEY & CREME

Just gonna leave this here (too).

17. DANCING IN THE STREET - MICK JAGGER & DAVID BOWIE

Just gonna leave this here (three).

1. MONEY FOR NOTHING - DIRE STRAITS

Hard to believe the #1 song in the country back then had these lyrics in it, and nobody minded.

See the little faggot with the earring and the make up
Yeah buddy that's his own hair
That little faggot got his own jet airplane
That little faggot he's a millionaire

My how the times have changed. Of course 80s on 8 plays a modified version that removes this verse and just extends the repetitive Sting ending.

It was written about Vince Neil of Motley Crue (at least that's what he seems to think).

#73 Cheech & Chong "Born In East LA"
#77 Bill Crystal "You Look Marvelous"

Classic novelty songs! Still love them.

Will never make the top 40
#54 Foreigner "Down On Love"
#55 Cheap Trick "Tonight It's You"
#64 Oingo Boingo "Weird Science"
#65 Survivor "First Night"
#71 Romantics "Test Of Time"
#73 Cheech & Chong "Born In East LA"
#77 Bill Crystal "You Look Marvelous"
#80 Roger Daltrey "After The Fire"
#86 Talking Heads "And She Was"
#87 Depeche Mode "Master & Servant"
#93 Til Tuesday "Looking Over My Shoulder"

I thought it was written by Mark and he left pretty much a direct quote from the guy he was making fun of as it enhanced that effect. This story was widely understood then and now.

In Canada a single person complained to standards body governing radio stations about the song and they tried to ban it. Several stations protested by playing the song repeatedly for a day. Eventually sanity prevailed.

Disappointed they did not play full version but 8 usually always plays the single version.

So here's my story. A few years back, when I heard "Money For Nothing" on 80s on 8 and realized they'd removed those lines, my first reaction was disappointment. Didn't know why they'd wanna change it. But nowadays, I'm shocked there was a time it was totally acceptable to have a song with the word 'faggot' - used in a derogatory sense - go top ten in 7 countries around the world (without at least editing the word out, the same way the other f-bomb gets edited for radio). I guess all of this tolerance propaganda is actually working on me?

Also, keep in mind...

* in '84 the BBC banned FGTH for saying "when you wanna come"

* in '87 GM's "I want your sex" was initially only aired after 9pm on the BBC Radio and some US stations wouldn't play it at all

* in '89 Shadoe Stevens wouldn't even announce 2LC's "Me so horny" on American Top 40.

Nothing derogatory or hateful in those, but "little faggot with the earring and the make up" can get 6 spins a day on every pop station in the world? Strange world we lived in back in the 80s where saying "horny" or "come" caused outrage, but g'head and insult someone by calling him a "faggot"...?

That word was never on the 7 words list to be beeped out.

The 80s and 70s always play the single version. For example good girls don't. You heard the single / edited version on the AT40 last weekend.

The AT40 had a memo about Paradise By The Dashboard light too. Partly due to length but partly due to content. It had explicit instructions on how a station could cut it out.

The pendulum swings both ways. One era isn't offended by the use of the word faggot. Another era is.

Lou Reed said color girls in his biggest hit. No one seems to be offended, but I don't think anyone will use that term in music for a while

Must kinda suck to listen to a Top 40 countdown and really only like 6 songs, lol?

A co-worker and I jokingly and lovingly refer to listening to the VJ40 each week as 'a form of torture'. We both listened to mostly to hard rock in the 80s, and didn't tune into pop stations because we hated most of it.

But, what I enjoy about them is rewinding the clock and immersing myself in a specific time in my life. I can be taken back to sitting in 9th grade math class, or hanging out at a friend's house, or driving to a concert with a certain group of friends I haven't seen since the 80s.

I know I post a lot of commentary on here, but I could easily double or triple it with personal stories about how certain songs remind me of certain moments, certain people. It brings back faces and experiences I haven't thought about in many many years - sometimes a smile, sometimes a cringe. But fun either way!

Plus I'm a sucker for the trivia and behind-the-music stories!

36. BOULEVARD - JACKSON BROWNE

"Nobody! Nobody!"

34. TAKE YOUR TIME - S.O.S. BAND

The SOS band has five songs that made it onto the Hot 100, peaking at #3, #44, #55, #64 and #65. And Onederland plays them as a band with "one big pop hit".

But then they play Modern English's "I Melt With You" which only peaked at #78 (a later re-recording reached #76).

So, how is "Melt" a "big pop hit", but SOS's lesser hits not "big pop hits"?

27. MAGIC - OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN
15. ALL OVER THE WORLD - THE ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA
11. XANADU - OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN & ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA

6. LATE IN THE EVENING - PAUL SIMON

I shoulda known that was Tony Levin on the bass. Glad the VJ pointed it out.

#48 Peter Gabriel "Games Without Frontiers"

First song to get the word "piss" on the radio? Or did they edit it out?

#54 Split Enz "I Got You"

Wow I didn't know this song was from 1980. Sounds ahead of its time.

#87 Kurtis Blow "The Breaks (Part 1)"

Trivia: second rap song to make it onto the Hot 100.

Songs that won't make the Top 40
#41 Linda Clifford "Red Light" (so close!!)
#48 Peter Gabriel "Games Without Frontiers"
#54 Split Enz "I Got You"
#55 Journey "Good Morning Girl/Stay Awhile"
#56 Chicago "Thunder And Lightning"
#58 Genesis "Turn It On Again"
#87 Kurtis Blow "The Breaks (Part 1)"
#95 Pat Benatar "You Better Run"
