Coming home from our March beach week at this time, they have played this (or a close one) several years. 1988 music really sucked. Skipped it this year.

Looks like I reposted the list of songs. Not sure why I didn't see it was already posted when I came here this morning.

If anyone with permissions can delete it, please go ahead!

Pop tart overload.

38: WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD – LOUIS ARMSTRONG

The best song on the countdown... is not an 80s song.

35: ELECTRIC BLUE - ICEHOUSE

Did Alan say this would hit #1? It did in Australia, but not here in the US.

8: JUST LIKE PARADISE – DAVID LEE ROTH

Didn't realize this song made the top 10.

3: FATHER FIGURE – GEORGE MICHAEL

Used to listen to this whole album back in the day, but now when I hear it I can only think of how creepy AF the lyrics are.

I will be your father figure
Put your tiny hand in mine
I have had enough of crime
I will be the one who loves you
Greet me with the eyes of a child

That aside, there is one line I've always liked a lot. I actually wrote the line in a note I sent to a girl after we broke up. After a while of dating, she finally confessed that she was afraid to actually fall in love. When I finally convinced her that she should try, she wrote me a note saying, "You're asking me to do the scariest thing in the world." Within a week, she started seeing someone else.

So when you remember the ones who have lied
Who said that they cared but then
Laughed as you cried
Beautiful darling, don't think of me
Because all I ever wanted
It's in your eyes

Not bad for an '82 countdown

Okay 7
Bad 22

36. '65 LOVE AFFAIR - PAUL DAVIS

Guilty pleasure.

35. NOBODY SAID IT WAS EASY - LE ROUX

Not to be confused with La Roux...

La-Roux-2.jpg

25. EDGE OF SEVENTEEN - STEVIE NICKS

It's an alright song and the subject matter is heartfelt, but the line "Ooo baby ooo said ooo" never did it for me.

24. DON'T TALK TO STRANGERS - RICK SPRINGFIELD

Always meant to look up the French in this song, so I finally did

Fais l'amour avec moi (Make love with me)
Viens dormir, mon amour (Come sleep, my love)
Je t'aime donne moi ton coeur se soir (I love you give me your heart tonight)

14. CHARIOTS OF FIRE - VANGELIS

When I'm not thinking of all of the times this song has been used in a silly way, it actually is quite beautiful.

13. KEY LARGO - BERTIE HIGGINS

The moment I made the decision to attend my cousin's wedding in the keys last year, I'd already had this planned in my head.

keylargo.jpg

12. BOBBIE SUE - OAK RIDGE BOYS

Ba-bah, ba-bah...

11. SPIRITS IN THE MATERIAL WORLD - THE POLICE

How the hell Sting played that bass line and sang at the same time is beyond me.

9. SHAKE IT UP - THE CARS

I've heard this song a hundred times, and just yesterday for the first time realized he says "Don't you worry 'bout two left feet". I always heard something like "two la beat" or something.

8. MIRROR, MIRROR - DIANA ROSS

Another instance where a song made the top 10 and I'd never heard it (before listening to these VJ 40s anyway).

6. WE GOT THE BEAT - THE GO-GO'S

Why can't the Go Go's have children? Their lips are sealed.

Went back to 6th grade remembering that joke.

Won't make the top 40
#43 Sammy Hagar "I'll Fall in Love Again"
#57 Sugarhill Gang "Apache"
#64 Survivor "Summer Nights"
#84 Bryan Adams "Lonely Nights"
#85 Player "If Looks Could Kill"
#99 Gino Vannelli "The Longer You Wait"
#100 Chubby Checker "Running"

Good to see things are returning to normal. If you had liked more, we would have known something was wrong.

#84 Bryan Adams "Lonely Nights"

This one is a surprise based upon the air play it got up here. But Adams is Canadian and he would have got more due to cancon rules.

My observation of the charts leads me to think that most, but certainly not all, of the songs that were hits in the U.S. were also pretty successful on the Canadian charts.

But I'm guessing that Canadian artists must have had a higher degree of success on the Canadian charts with songs that may not have hit in the U.S.

Does that make sense or seem correct?

A Canadian radio station must play 1/3 Cancon (Canadian music) so some artists did well here but could not crack the us market. In most cases the big hits in the states were as big or almost as big here. Some of the stuff that didn't crack the top 10 not so much.
