Here's my humble two cents for the week:

40. Kim Carnes – Invisible Hands
Interesting how she never saw the same success of Bette Davis eyes.

39. DeBarge – Time Will Reveal
@sadchild - I saw Beavis in your link for last year. LOL.
I was surprised to see this one because I didn't realize DeBarge cracked the 40 a few times before Rhythm of the Night.

37. Matthew Wilder – Break My Stride
This is a classic one hit wonder.

36. JoBoxers – Just Got Lucky
Great song. Very underrated.

32. Human League – Mirror Man
Good stuff from Human League

31. Dionne Warwick/Luther Vandross – How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye
@sadchild - I see Beavis is back again. :)

29. Ricks Springfield – Souls
@sadchild - I'd never heard this one either.

27. Yes – Owner Of A Lonely Heart
A highlight from the 80s. Leave It was a good follow-up.

24. Big Country – In A Big Country
Another solid track from the UK.

19. Peabo Bryson/Roberta Flack – Tonight, I Celebrate My Love
@sadchild - I looked him up on wikipedia and thankfully he wasn't named Peabo at birth.

15. Fixx – One Thing Leads To Another
The Fixx were amazing and underrated.

13. Motels – Suddenly Last Summer
They should have had more hits.

10. Michael Jackson – P.Y.T.
@sadchild - I wonder if the lower showing was due to the lack of a video or that it was the seventh single from Thriller.

5. Quiet Riot – Cum On Feel The Noise
I wasn't aware this was a remake until recently.

1. Lionel Richie –All Night Long (All Night)
@sadchild - Calling on Beavis!!!

Won't make the top 40
#48 Pointer Sisters "I Need You"
I don't remember this one at all.

#49 Jennifer Holliday "I Am Love"
I was surprised to see this one so close to the 40. It peaked at #2 on the R&B chart.

#72 Klique "Stop Doggin' Me Around"
This one was a surprise too. I listened to it YouTube and it clicked. I always thought this was Richard "Dimples" Fields singing.

#77 Kiss "Lick It Up"
I remember the video for this one.

#90 Midnight Star "Wet My Whistle"
#91 SOS Band "Tell Me If You Still Care"
#96 SOS Band "Just Be Good To Me"
All three of these tracks were very popular on R&B stations. Just Be Good To Me made it to #13 on the UK chart and #2 US R&B.

19. Peabo Bryson/Roberta Flack – Tonight, I Celebrate My Love

Whoa! Worst voluntary name change since Englebert Humperdinck

10. Michael Jackson – P.Y.T.
@sadchild - I wonder if the lower showing was due to the lack of a video or that it was the seventh single from Thriller.

Good point about there being no video. That could definitely be a factor.

Good 6
Okay 7
Bad 27

31: DESERT MOON – DENNIS DeYOUNG

My son asked "Is this a Christmas song?"

11: LIKE A VIRGIN - MADONNA

My guess for #1. It's the next song to take the top spot.

7: SEA OF LOVE – THE HONEYDRIPPERS

849ec66b71f5b46eaaf54fdc6fd56492.jpg

2: WAKE ME UP BEFORE YOU GO-GO – WHAM!

My friend's roommate's guess. It just dropped from the top spot this week.

1: OUT OF TOUCH – DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES

My friend's son's guess.

#46 Frankie Goes To Hollywood "Two Tribes"

My favorite song on the Hot 100 this week.

#65 Eurogliders "Heaven (Must Be There)"

If anyone ever asks "What did 80s new wave fashion look like?" just show them this song's video.

#75 J Geils Band "Concealed Weapons"

"We can do this without Peter Wolf" ... or not.

#82 Billy Satellite "I Wanna Go Back"

I love Eddie Money's cover. This original is pretty lame though.

#88 Jacksons "Body"

Haven't heard this since 84. Just listened. I vaguely remember it.

Will never make the top 40

Here's my two cents for the week: :)

38: THE BELLE OF ST. MARK – SHEILA E.
Good to see she had more than one song make the 40.

36: WHAT ABOUT ME – KENNY ROGERS WITH KIM CARNES AND JAMES INGRAM
Calling Beavis!!! :)

35: (PRIDE) IN THE NAME OF LOVE – U2
Their first 40 appearance.

33: JAMIE – RAY PARKER, JR.
Weak follow-up to Ghostbusters.

32: STRANGER IN TOWN - TOTO
I didn't remember this one, but not bad.

30: CENTIPEDE – REBBIE JACKSON
I cast my vote for one the strangest videos out there. The video and the song don't have much in common.

26: WE ARE THE YOUNG – DAN HARTMAN
Underrated. He was a part of the Edgar Winter Group before venturing out on his own.

25: I JUST CALLED TO SAY I LOVE YOU – STEVIE WONDER
May I request a double Beavis?

22: DO WHAT YOU DO – JERMAINE JACKSON
The video featured David Bowie's wife, Iman.

19: CARIBBEAN QUEEN (NO MORE LOVE ON THE RUN) – BILLY OCEAN
There were two other versions based on geographic location (European Queen (No More Love on the Run) and African Queen (No More Love On the Run).

17: IT AIN’T ENOUGH – COREY HART
His album was produced by Jon Astley who we chatted about a few weeks ago.

12: BETTER BE GOOD TO ME – TINA TURNER
I discovered this was a remake. Actually, several of her hits were remakes of other artist's songs.

6: NO MORE LONELY NIGHTS – PAUL McCARTNEY
The video for this was cool, but I never saw the movie Give My Regards to Broadstreet.

3: I FEEL FOR YOU – CHAKA KHAN
This may have been the first record to feature a rapper as a special guest.

Will never make the top 40

#46 Frankie Goes To Hollywood "Two Tribes"
@sadchild - I agree. This should have definitely been in the 40. Welcome to the Pleasuredome was a great track too.

#59 Rick Springfield "Taxi Dancing"
This one is interesting because it features Randy Crawford on vocals. She had more success overseas and on the R&B chart. She won the Best New Artist at the 1982 BRIT awards too.

#69 Fixx "Sunshine in the Shade"
I didn't remember this one so I found it on YouTube. Really good stuff!

#76 Shalamar "Amnesia"
Shalamar (post line-up changes) were on their last leg at this point.

#85 Dazz Band "Let It All Blow"
They were known for making funky tracks.

#87 Melissa Manchester "Thief Of Hearts"
This was from the soundtrack of a movie with the same name. I remember the previews for the movie.

#94 Van Halen "Hot For Teacher"
The video was in heavy rotation which should have helped it reach the 40.

#99 Barbra Streisand "Left In The Dark"
This is another Jim Steinman creation.

Good to see she had more than one song make the 40.

My fav track from her is "Love Bizarre" which is her third top 40.

12: BETTER BE GOOD TO ME – TINA TURNER
I discovered this was a remake. Actually, several of her hits were remakes of other artist's songs.

Same with Joan Jett. Most of her hits are covers: "I Love Rock N Roll" "Crimson & Clover" "Dirty Deeds" "Everyday People" "Do You Wanna Touch"

A love bizarre was one of my favs too. It was on the Krush Groove soundtrack. Sister Fate was another good track, but it didn't even crack the Hot 100.

I didn't realize Joan Jett was in that club too. Here are some of Tina's remakes: Let's Stay Together, Help!, What's Love Got to Do with It, I Can't Stand the Rain, The Best

All five of those Jett songs were originally sung by guys. "Do You Want To Touch" was originally by habitual offending creepster Gary Glitter.

It's interesting how a song originally written for (or first sung by) a guy then sung by a female can become a huge hit. Like "I Love Rock N Roll", about meeting someone at the jukebox and saying "Let's go home and eff" (basically). And ONJ "Physical" was originally offered to Rod Stewart, and really seems like it'd be written for a guy. I mean, a song talking about "I did all the polite stuff, bought you dinner, listened to you yammer on for hours, let's get down to business already..." More how a guy's mind would work than a lady.

Who originally did "What's Love Got To Do With It"?

Gary Glitter is awful. I believe he's currently in prison. He made me think about Jimmy Saville too. He was a host on Top of the Pops in 80s and cut from the same cloth.

It's really interesting how songs were shopped around. I guess when you add all the elements (vocals, arrangements, etc.) you can lose sight of the lyrical content. Also, I think about songs I heard as a child, but didn't understand the sexual innuendo until later in life.

What's Love Got to Do with It was recorded by Bucks Fizz. They didn't chart in the US. I'm not sure if they had material released here. Another interesting tidbit. The song is sung one of their male leads.
