I've seen Astro the Robot somewhere. I can't think where. Ummm........oh, now I remember. On Hanna-Barbera's 1962-63 animated the series The Jetsons. Only the robot wasn't called Astro then – it was Rosie. But the Jetsons had a dog named Astro. Maybe Hanna-Barbera can see Jeff Bezos for plagiarism. He stole the robot and he stole the name!

Since the storm, our Verizon connection is not always great (often times is, but bogs down in the evenings). Anyway, the last two movies I rented to watch on Prime, I was able to watch them, but there was a couple of interruptions due to slow service or buffering.

A couple days later, Amazon sends me an email saying "we noticed that you recently experienced poor video playback on Prime Video. We're sorry for the inconvenience, and have issued you a refund for the rental and amount"

Wow, very impressed, I didn't even ask for a refund, the system recognized it, and gave me my money back. Wasn't expecting that.

Nice to know they're monitoring you so closely, they picked up on that. Did they say anything about what you were snacking on?

IDK, this isn't really shocking to me. I just assume that despite what the company may say, Amazon can hear everything I say when I'm in the vicinity of my echo. Also, while I don't assume this to be true I wouldn't be surprised if Google records every single thing I say (or starts recording when I say certain keywords) since I have my Android phone on me at all times.

That's kinda the tradeoff I make for want to have the convenience of these devices. All they want to use that stuff for is to find ways for them to sell me more things and give them more of my money.

It gets a more troublesome when wondering if they share with the government. I'm not doing anything the government would care about but thinking that may be happening sucks.

I posted about this on my Facebook wall a while ago. I was a little surprised at first, but then thought if someone has access to me saying "Alexa, what's the weather tomorrow?" 75 times, who gives a shart?

I’m in the same boat. If the government started monitoring my phone and tablet, they would be bored to tears. From that perspective, I don’t really care. I’m positive they use that stuff to try to sell me crap, but again, I don’t really care. That’s why all of this social media stuff is free. Nobody wants to pay cash to use FB or any of those services, so they need to ask how they stay free.

If you have a phone or laptop, there's stuff kept local to those. But the amazon products are all cloud based, there's no local computer to keep it on, so it's in your online account folder. And yes, they probably use it for marketing and what not, but it's your account for your service that you signed-up for. How is that any different than your bank and credit card accounts. "Oh my god, I get this statement every month, with all my purchases, and balances, and my personal information, but I just found out they have all that information stored on their computers, and god knows what they're doing with that!".

More than anything, its the security side of the privacy that I'm concerned about. I don't mind if I see ads for deodorant or whatever, but I don't want to get phone calls about it, or have my passwords and account information floating around out there.

But what can it do other than spy on you?
It can't grab a beer out of the fridge or check the dryer, or take the trash out.
Why bother?

somehow alexa knows how to pronounce my name. I just asked the time and she told me then said "have a good morning Jan" but said it right, like yon.

little bit creepy. i must have told her once right?

i think there's a good chance we're living in black mirror.

Mister JHDK, here is something fun you can try. Sometimes when you ask a question of Alexa, she (it?) will reply, "I'm sorry, I didn't quite get that." When that happens, ask, "Alexa, tell me what you heard." Prepare to be amused and amazed.
