Once again, the Word Search game within Words With Friends has provided me with content for a post.
The category for all these words is "multiple pronunciations" - which, by the way, they misspelled!
Anyway, I thought it would be interesting to see how each of you pronounce these words:
1. Caramel - A) CAH-ruh-mel, or B) CAR-mel, or C) both
2. Sherbet - A) SHER-bit, or B) SHER-bert, or C) both
3. Caribbean - A) cah-ruh-BEE-un, or B) cuh-RIB-ee-un, or C) both
4. Foyer - A) foy-YAY, or B) FOY-yer, or C) both
5. Pecan - A) pee-CAN, or B) pee-KAHN, or C) both
6. Route - A) ROWWT, or B) RUTE, or C) both
7. Leisure - A) LEE-zhure, or B) LEZH-yer, or C) both
8. Niche - A) NITCH, or B) NEESH, or C) both
9. Aunt - A) ANT, or B) AHHNT, or C) both
10. Data - A) DAY-tuh, or B) DAHH-tuh, or C) both
11. Either - A) EE-ther, or B) EYE-ther, or C) both
12. GIF - A) GIFF, or B) JIFF, or C) both
You can just post your A, B, or C choices in order.
Here are mine:
1. C - I know it should be 3 syllables, but I know I don't always say it that way
2. A
3. C - again, I feel like B is correct, but I slip and use both
4. B
5. A
6. C - I say A for wiring things, and B for highways
7. A
8. B
9. C - this is a big one for me. I grew up saying A, but in New England they look at you funny if you don't say B
10. A
11. C - I think B is correct, but I say both
12. A - without a doubt
