Are They A One-Hit Wonder?

Jimmy Loves Mary-Anne spent nine weeks on the top thirty of KHJ in Los Angeles in August-September 1973, including three weeks at its peak position of #15. I remember the song quite well – but I have never heard it played as an oldie on any station. I say Looking Glass is a one-hit wonder.

Here, said Steven, deftly changing the subject, is Looking Glass, one of my favorite songs by the Association. It managed a single week on the Bubbling Under chart – at #113 – in January 1967.

Pete Townshend
#9 "Let My Love Open The Door"
#26 "Face The Face"

Who is Pete Townshend? Nobody over the age of 25 is asking that? We know WHO he is. In fact, he's pretty much THE WHO. Of course he's written a ton of hits. But in his solo career he's only had two top 40s. I'm a little surprised, actually. WHOdathunkit?

He has had a lot more rock hits. Not a 1 hit wonder to me.

^This. Empty Glass got a ton of radio airplay, with Rough Boys, A Little Is Enough, and Let... And then from his next album, Face Dances Pt. 2 is on rock radio rotation, plus Slit Skirts. And later, aside from Face the Face, he got airplay with Give Blood.

Slade
#20 "Run Runaway"
#37 "My Oh My"

We were just talking about these guys in the cover songs thread. Not subjectively a OHW. You either know both songs, or neither.

I have heard both. They wrote a whole bunch of others who are covered by other people. The whole "Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply" is a great album. Given there are 2 recognizable hits (at least in Canada), not a one hit wonder.

Roots
#34 "What They Do"
#39 "You Got Me" (with Erykah Badu)

I don't either of these two hits. But I know "My Shot" (from Hamilton) and "Right On".

Billy Paul
#1 "Me and Mrs Jones"
#37 "Thanks For Saving My Life"

Recognize the first one, not a fan. Don't recognize the second one. Subjectively a OHW maybe?

Terry Stafford
#3 Suspicion
#25 "I'll Touch A Star"

"Suspicion" would have been a chart-topper if it weren't for that pesky flash-in-the-pan long-forgotten band The Beatles, who occupied the #1, #2 and #4 spot on the Hot 100 that week. Back when that was an actual accomplishment because you couldn't manipulate the system with streams.

I don't know either song.

Suspicion got to #2 on the February 29 1964 Tune-Dex survey of Pasadena top-40 station KRLA. (The Beatles' I Want To Hold Your Hand was number one.) Suspicion peaked at #4 on the KFWB Fabulous Forty. I'll Touch A Star reached #24 on the KFWB Fabulous Forty in June 1964 but never appeared on the KRLA Tune-Dex – which was a top 50! Here is the original version of Suspicion from Elvis Presley's 1962 album Pot Luck. In April 1964, the song was released as the B-side of Kiss Me Quick and reached #103 on the Bubbling Under chart.
