Second single from his first album.

He's hit the top 40 twice since then with the third single from that first album, and again with the lead single of his second album. Both of those have fallen off the (broken) chart, but this one is still in the top 10.
OK. I use xmplaylist.com to get info. But I can only get the current playlist, or the most played for 30 or 60 days. So a song that got a lot of airplay early in the year, but isn't in their all-time-favorites list, won't show up. I guess the one that did show up was an all-time favorite.

I may have found a chart that's not broken!

The Republic-released set’s lead single promoted to radio, “The Fate of Ophelia,” blasts in as the first song ever to debut in the top 10 of Billboard’s Pop Airplay chart, at No. 8 on the list dated Oct 18. It passes two hits — one by Swift — that each started at a prior No. 12 best: her own “Shake It Off” (Sept. 6, 2014) and Mariah Carey’s “Dreamlover” (Aug. 14, 1993).

Who was the first artist to have the number-one and number-two song in the same week? I'm glad I asked. It was Irish tenor George J. Gaskin, whose Drill, Ye Tarriers, Drill and The Picture That Is Turned Toward The Wall were the top two songs on the December 5 1891 "Best Selling Phonograph Records" chart of record industry publication Phonogram. I doubt Taylor Swift will ever record those songs. They are not her style. Gaskin's version of the latter song is not on YouTube so I'm sharing a 1925 recording by Vernon Dalhart.

This exciting – or not – story was posted today on Billboard.com:

"Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You jingles all the way back to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, jumping four spots for a record-tying 19th total week atop the chart. It matches the reigns of two hits that led over one release cycle each – Shaboozey’s A Bar Song (Tipsy) in 2024 and Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road, featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, in 2019 — for the longest command over the chart’s 67-year history."

Song titles can't be copyrighted. You're welcome, Mariah. Here is All I Want For Christmas Is You (1989) by Lisa Layne with Vince Vance & The Vailiants."Vince Vance" is Andrew Franichevich Jr., who calls himself "Andy Stone." He filed two unsuccessful lawsuits (in 2022 and 2023) against Mariah Carey, claiming that her song profited off his own song. He couldn't prove that the two songs are similar.

The Lisa Layne/Vince Vance song never appeared on the Hot 100 but it made Billboard's country chart in six different Decembers. It got to #55 in 1993, #52 in 1994, #52 in 1995, #49 in 1996, #43 in 1997 and #31 in 1999.

Peter McCann, best known for the 1977 #5 hit Do You Wanna Make Love, also recorded a song titled All I Want For Christmas Is You. He co-wrote it with Harlan Howard and included it on his 1995 What Christmas Really Means album. The Oak Ridge Boys recorded a version for their 2012 Christmas Time's A-Coming album.

A fourth song with that title was a single by Foghat in 1981 and appeared on the 2018 Secret Santa Party compilation CD.

Easy part is I haven’t listened to any Christmas stations yet. The good fortune part is I normally would have heard it in a store or someplace like that by now, and just haven’t.

I've managed to avoid the Mariah thing so far too!
We sometimes played that in my previous community band. But my current band is more "serious". We do sing-a-longs, and mash-ups, but no Mariah. One piece we're doing is a mix of The Little Drummer Boy and Bolero.

And unlike Madison, I'm not seeking-out Christmas music channels. But I'm happy for him. About all I'm catching is new indie and classic rock. Maybe I'll hear "Do They Know it's Christmas" or some such.
