I've just never considered the risk of killing myself or others to be worth it. One time I was in the back seat of a car. My friend was in the passenger seat (female) and a friend of hers was driving. Just to show off, he took it up to 90 on a 35. Residential. Neither of us were impressed. We both just thought he was a tool. Coulda killed a kid, someone on a bike, us (if an animal jumped out in the road), etc.

That aside, if there is an occasion that is relatively safe (I hear about highways in the west that have no speed limit) and you got a sweet ride that can handle it, by all means. I'm a little bit chicken in that regard, I'll admit. But I do understand the need...... for speed.

I think the no speed limit roads are a thing of the past. With the 55 speed limit mandate, in exchange for federal funs, the states all had to make their speed limits 55. In Montana they made the fine for speeding above 55 $5 cash on the spot. When 55 no longer became a restriction, the states raised their speed limits but did not get rid of them.

It was a Corvette, as I mentioned. Of course, I'm not sure that you or anyone else seriously cares.
No I was totally serious. Those thunderbird (or maybe firebird?) With the giant art on the front hood and the t top was the coolest car ever to me as a kid and while my passion has faded a bit with the years, I still thin t tops are really freaking cool.

That's the Smokey & the Bandit car. I was never a "screaming chicken on the hood" type of guy.

I had one of these

T-tops were popular during large parts of the 70s and 80s, when convertibles were not being produced (for safety reasons). They were also popular items to steal, as happened with my car.

Viagra is cheaper......

But those were really great Vettes.
Well thanks (I think). But they were actually some of the worst Vettes. Only the 80-81 was lamer, at 180 hp; my 82 had 200 hp. A bunch of stuff going on in the world at the time made sports cars suck. But anyway, I wasn't actually in the market for one of them. I've told this story before, but here's a recap.

My first car was a 1970 Duster that I paid $200 for, and had towed to the house. I spent 6 months getting it running and fixed-up. A year later, the engine blew-up when an oil gasket went. I got a family hand-me-down car, which was a 75 Monte Carlo (Landau). I drove that to the closest train station every day for my college commute. Midway through my sophomore year, I drove it off an icy road down an embankment, and was stopped by a tree. The frame was messed-up, so the garage who towed it bought it from us. My dad offered to get a Corvette as a company car (an expense for his little manufacturing shop), in return for me taking the train to school from a different station. Now I had to drive to his shop every day, and walk to the train stop in that town. While I was in school, he was joyriding in the Vette.

In June 2022, the average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline hit an all-time high of $5.01 – and was more than $6 in California, Oregon, Nevada, Alaska and Hawai'i. Thus, this news will not surprise anybody:

No shock whatsoever. In fact, we predicted it somewhere on here. Wherever I posted the screenshot of Mobil's profits after 9/11 being the highest in the history of the world.

As I've said before, while I'm not defending Big Oil, it's simple math. If a product sells for a higher price, then those who have a percentage profit interest will make more money. I'm sure you'd find the same with lumber, or groceries, or anything.

Look at houses. If house prices are up 25%, then real estate agents are making more on commissions. I'm not sure why one would expect things to work differently.

People expect corporate (oil co.) profits to be down because they believe it when the companies claim that their costs are skyrocketing. I don’t doubt that their operating costs are higher right now, but the facts are simple. They charge more because they can. They are in business to make money, and it makes sense that they will try to charge what the market will allow.
