On June 6, the price of a gallon of gas at the Chevron station on Glenoaks Blvd. here in Glendale hit a record high of $6.60. Today it's "only" $5.69. That is the cash price. The credit price is $5.79. At the Arco in La Cañada, gas is $4.91. That is the cheapest in this area – "cheapest" being a relative term.

That works out to like $4.27 per gallon in US dollars. Not bad.

There's an article somewhere in this thread saying that $6/gal gas in urban California is better than $4/gal in a place like east bumfuck Mississippi, because of the relative wage base and standard of living costs. So consider yourself lucky.

So with the new car tires and an alignment, I thought I’d run some checks to see how my highway mileage is doing.

If I keep the cruise control set at 5 over the limit at 75 mph (staying in the middle or right lanes, of course) I was getting 40.3 mpg. When the speed limit dropped to 60, I reset the cruise at 65, and was getting 40.9 mpg.

Not too bad for a 12 year old car.

Chevron is still around 5.39. There are a few places down to 4.89. My rewards card food store guest into that range.

Hectic, those are good numbers. But I need to clarify what you're telling us. Are you giving us the instant mpg readings at 65/75 mph? Or are you saying that if you do a tank of gas where you don't exceed 75, you average 40.3, and for 65, you average 40.9? Because clearly, sadchild is assuming the latter.

My nearly 2-ton cruiser, with a straight-6 engine and a 6-speed manual, averages between 28 and 30 mpg overall. At a constant highway cruise of 75 mph, I get 33 or 34 mpg as an instant reading. Our Subaru Outback, with full-time AWD, averages about 31 mpg overall.

That's highway cruising, not combined city/highway for the tank. Call it highway combined average over a 15 mile stretch.
Combined highway/city for a tank is about 36 or 37 mpg theses days. It drops down to 29 in the winter when I run the remote start to warm it up. It also doesn't like cold weather in general.

When I drove my dad's (now my) van from Saskatoon to Toronto, I set cruise control = maximum allowed speed. Where the max was 110km/hour I got worse than when the speed was 90km/hour even though the latter was over hills and the former was on flat divided road. I remember someone telling me you should use cruise on hills as it can do a better job adjusting to the hills than you can with regards to gas efficiency. Neither number was great as the van is a gas guzzler. It consistently takes about twice as many litres to go 100km than my Corolla.

Well, he's getting 36 or 37 (see above) on average. The 40.3 and 40.9 are both highway-only numbers; either one is the instant mpg reading he gets when cruising at either 65 or 75 mph. Hopefully we're all on the same page now.

Who woulda known that a fun, slightly random, observation would become a thing?
So two days after resetting my mileage meter, I’m getting 39 combined city / highway.
(There were more highway than city miles.) I’ll see how it’s looking when I gas-up next week.

2. New England is all up in this:

Massachusetts
The state's Department of Environmental Protection says it will adopt and implement California's standard for clean cars. The state also said it would explore strategies to reduce the cost of electric vehicles.

Vermont
Vermont said it would increase the sale of electric vehicles over the next decade. The state's department of environmental conservation estimates that by 2025, 5.4% of new vehicles sold in Vermont will be required to be zero-emission vehicles.

Maine
Maine has its own climate action plan called "Maine Won't Wait." The state's governor, Janet Mills, says the state will put more than 200,000 zero-emission vehicles on the road by 2030.

Connecticut
Last month, Governor Ned Lamont signed a bill that ensures "Connecticut residents and businesses can access clean, affordable passenger vehicles, trucks, school buses, transit buses, and electric bikes," the governor said in his announcement. The state has committed to putting 125,000-150,000 EVs on the road by 2025.

Rhode Island
Rhode Island's governor, Daniel McKee, recently joined 11 other state governors that sent a letter urging Biden to support phasing out gas-powered cars by 2035.
