The company was formed in 1670 as a fur trading company. Now it has filed for credit protection. It has big stores in malls with lots of expensive stuff. Not really suited to today's markets.

There's some show from a few years back about the first British department store, Harding Howell and Co in 1796.

Hudson started as a fur trader.... Which makes sense because I imagine most of Canada is still just like Savage white people trying to kill bears for their pelts.... But anyway, they were one of the first ever North American department stores that opened in 1881 according to Gemini.

Imagine opening one of the first ever department stores in North America. It must have been so risky but then also so freaking rewarding like that dude was Jeff bezos of the 19th century I bet. He did it before Sears and Roebuck.

Korean immigrants (and husband and wife) Do Won Chang and Jin Sook Chang opened their Fashion 21 store in 1984 in the Highland Park district of Los Angeles. They made $700,000 in their first year and began opening more stores, renamed Forever 21. At its peak in 2016, Forever 21 had 811 locations worldwide, including 549 in the United States. The original store, still known as Fashion 21, closed in April 2020. If the company can not find a buyer, all its U.S. stores will close in 2025.

Forever 21 CFO Brad Sell is blaming "competition from foreign fast fashion companies, which have been able to take advantage of the de minimis exemption to undercut our brand on pricing and margin.” He was referring to Temu and Shein. Hey, Brad, did you see this story today?

Temu and Shein aim for U.S. market supremacy, challenging Amazon's hold

If you think about it, Forever 21 could refer to a serial killer who murders 21 year olds. They're "forever 21".

It's interesting to see you're random thoughts like that. Mine usually go to sex, manatees, Phish, Disney, Eagles or American history.

So when I read 21 I was thinking that's after WW1, I'm pretty sure that's during the gilded age. Not 100% about that.

Then hectic made the joke about 42 and that's WW2. We were definitely involved in the Pacific at that time.

Then I tried to think of Eagles that were number 21. BDawk was 20. That's common knowledge. But I can't think of anybody who was 21.

What, no "royal flush" joke? The population of Gila Bend is only around 1,900 but the town has a library, Burger King, McDonald's, Taco Bell, Dairy Queen, Circle K, Dollar General – and the Space Age Lodge & Restaurant.
