  • My Chemical Romance [09/04 Scotiabank Arena, Toronto, ON]
This show was last night. It was a good show. I enjoyed the music of the main band (setlist below). As far as experiences it was mediocre. Once you got by the lead singer's makeup there wasn't anything special he added to the show.

We started the evening with a dinner at The Keg. I had a very nice Prime Rib and Lobster. We then headed over to Scotiabank Arena. Our seats were directly to the right of the stage in the upper (300) level. We had good view but sideways. Side view of the screens as well. The ice rink had the stage on the west side of the rink (the ice was covered). The east side of the rink had floor seats. But the space in the middle was standing room. This is where the most interesting stuff happened during the main show. The band had 2 opening acts. The first was "Meg Myers" who had a good voice. She did a cover of Kate Bush's "Walking Up The Hill" which was quite nice. She was a hit with both my son and I. The second act was "Waterparks" and they were utterly forgettable, Neither me nor my son liked them.

During the My Chemical Romance show, the crowd was interesting. The whole audience stood (not that big a deal at this arena as the seats were inclined). I stood for most of it too just taking a couple breaks. The guy next to me sang and danced the whole time. Videos I took from the show included his voice louder than the band. On the stand up area, the band employed a different model of security than typical. They had the typical row of security at the front which looked to be doing the standard security stuff. But then people started crowd surfing. They surfed forward to the stage. When they got to near the front. the security guys would reach in and secure them and bring them down in front of the fence. They surfer would then run off to the closest side and to the back of the crowd often to repeat the same experience. It was fun watching some of them partially fall. One woman had her legs in the air but every other part of her was upside down. Eventually they got her to the front. At the back of the crowd they had guys slam dancing with each other. It was ignored by security and everybody seemed to have a good time. It was a reminder why we never buy standing room seating.

My Chemical Romance did my ***** and **** song (noted in the setlist). I also discovered another **** song "I'm Not Ok (I Promise)" from an earlier album. The album had many songs that were played and I enjoyed and was in iTunes for $6.99 so I bought. I also bought "Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)" as well. I have included videos for 4 the above mentioned songs in the setlist.

When I go to a concert, I usually bring a setlist. 99% of the artists follow almost the same setlist each show occasionally moving one song. MCR is the 1%. By the second song the setlist was useless. About 1/2 the songs were not done previous show. And order was completely different. Went back several shows and no 2 were the same. This must be hell for the crew to remember a different setlist each show.

Meg Myers
I dig her. I like "Sorry" and "Tear Me To Pieces"
Videos I took from the show included his voice louder than the band.
I hate that. Yes I like getting into it, but don't become the show. I had to move to a worse spot when I saw Liz Phair because a tone deaf bitch 'sang' along to every word of every song and I couldn't stand it anymore.
"Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)"
Songs that try to pass of La La's, Na Na's and Doot Do's as legit lyrics.

About 1/2 the songs were not done previous show.
That's cool. I opened for Shinedown in Maine, then saw them again the next day in Massachusetts and it was the exact same show ... down to the exact same speech about Sylvester Stallone between the same two songs. Painfully scripted.

I usually just add music concerts to this list but have added some comedians before so I will add it here. My wife saw this and asked to go so I got tickets for "HYPROV: Improv Under Hypnosis". This sounds weird but it involves Colin Mochrie so that kind of explains it.

So this show was last night. It was fabulous. I went with my son and my middle daughter. We elected to visit the food truck we use when we go to baseball games. Good hot dog and fries. We then headed to the Rogers Centre (aka Skydome).

The first thing we checked out was the t-shirt stand. But minimum price was $65 so out of our price range. We then bought drinks and proceeded to our seats. The stadium was in blue much like the Imagine Dragons show. This time we noticed security and help people had really bright yellow and red shirts on. We now figure that the blue lights give a cheap blacklight feel where certain colours refect brighter.

Elton was not the best entertainer I have seen this summer. He wasn't even the best singer. But the overall presentation and show was one of the best. He used the video board behind him well. His band members were in cutout areas of the screen so the video surrounded them. He mixed shots of him playing the piano (and my God can he play. I think he is about the best keyboardist/piano player I have seen in any concert ever) with footage from his movie, his videos. For "Tiny Dancer" he included the fan created video in it's entirety. Here it is for reference:

And yes "Tiny Dancer" is my favourite Elton John song. Setlist below. There was no opener. Apparently he has some "new" music out: "Cold Heart" and "Hold Me Closer". The first is a duet with someone (no idea who) and the second is a duet with Britney Spears. He said it was #1 in Canada. "Cold Heart" had lyrics suspiciously close to "Rocket Man" while "Hold Me Closer" sounded suspiciously like "Tiny Dancer". This is why the "new" is in quotes.

I thought I heard something about him not doing Crocodile Rock again live. Must be because it's the farewell tour.

Sounds like a great show. Not sure if he's coming my way again.

I think you're seeing Eagles on the first night of their tour. I'm anxious to see the setlist. I've got tickets for November in New Orleans.

They are resuming the tour. They have done shows earlier in the spring. First 9 songs are a given. :)

I went to see them on Hell Freezes Over tour. The first song was, of course, Hotel California. And they played all the hits, including the solo stuff, good show otherwise.

This tour they start with the Hotel California album in entirety. Then greatest hits.

I almost had a chance to see Duran Duran last night. I didn’t know they were in the valley. I always wanted to see them. Well hopefully they will be on tour again sometime down the road.

I will try to spoiler mark the surprises. And I will put setlist right here in case you choose not to read more so not to spoil your show in November. Note this is different than the setlist they did in the spring. They dropped one song and shuffled things up a bit.

  • Eagles [09/09 Scotiabank Arena, Toronto, ON]

This show was on Friday. We started the evening with dinner at Boston Pizza. We then found a t-shirt vendor outside the stadium and bought t-shorts. They were at our minimum price. We then went inside. Our seats were in the 300 (upper) level but facing dead on the stage. The stage was at the other end of the hockey rink and we were behind the other goal.

The stage was hidden by a large curtain. About 8:15 the house lights went out and a spotlight came on to a person walking across the stage in front of the curtain. They went from right to left and then picked up a square object. They showed the object and it was the "Hotel California" album. They then placed it upon a record player and moved the arm and dropped it on the album. The speakers played some record static and then the unmistakable opening chords of the song "Hotel Californa" were heard as the curtain rose. They played the songs in the album straight through with breaks between. There was no talking to the audience. After "Wasted Time", a girl came out and walked across the stage and flipped the album.

After the "Hotel California" play was done, Don Henley welcomed us and said they were going to take a short break so we could go pee. They would be back and "do every song we remember". The break was about 20 minutes.

They then proceeded with the greatest hits set. After the first song, they introduced a surprise guest -- Decon Fry. He sang "Take It Easy" and "Peaceful Easy Feeling". He came back later and did "Already Gone". He did not play the rest of the evening. This was a bit of a shock since they made a big deal about Decon leaving the group to pursue his own career. Not sure if this was a one time thing or will be a feature of the tour.

It was a good show. Some asshole smoking joints was a constant distraction (more for my son than me). We decided however that this was likely our last Eagles show. We saw them before in 2018. The 4 years have been cruel. Don Henley now looks like an old man. Still plays drum and guitar and sings great. Joe Walsh however has lost his vocal faculties. He seems to be really struggling with enunciation. He also seems to be struggling with memory of lyrics on occasion. "Life's Been Good" was almost painful. He still plays a mean guitar and that salvaged it (barely). Vince Gill still looks youngish. Timothy B. Schmitt looks a bit older. They had another session musician guitarist who was never introduced. So overall a good show. I am glad I went.

ETA: They had a full orchestra to play with them on several songs both for the "Hotel California" part and the rest.

I sometimes live stream a couple of songs from each concert and then leave them posted on Facebook. I did that for "New Kid In Town" and "Life in the Fast Lane". I got a nasty note from the Facebook police that I had posted copyrighted material and they had partially muted it. I also record for my posterity several songs. I used to post those later to Facebook. I was not able to do that this time. So far this is the only artist which either plays their stuff close enough to their recording to be recognized or actively enforces their copyrights.

I also saw a promo for a concert for Smashing Pumpkins with Jane's Addiction. Debating on this but I may actually be concerted out as I have not jumped on it.
