I think the ability for a grade 1 student to be able to draw the flag is a stupid criteria. I think the new old one is kind of lame.

I don't like either of the Maine flags. I like flags that are simple shapes and lines, but not TOO simple.

Examples of perfect flags IMO:

US
Canada
UK
the old USSR hammer/sickle/star flag
Hong Kong (flower on red)
South Korea (yin yang with the 4 elements)

The Chinese flag looks cool but I don't like what they're saying with it

That pine with a star is the original flag of Maine? But the video said it was from 1901... So Maine didn't have any state flag before 1901. That seems weird.
States had Militia flags before then. Maine separated from Massachusetts in 1820 and used Militia flags until the first State flag in 1901. If you watch that long-ass video sadchild posted, it explains that states didn't have flags just "because".

Just because you cant read it doesn't mean that it's not words. FAIL!
I know the video maker (CGPGrey) doesn't like any words, but I don't mind a word or 3, or a letter.

I like Brazil's flag, though I'd get rid of all those stars (maybe leave a few?) Or better yet, make the circle in the center a soccer ball!

Ok one more

Israel's flag is another good example of a great flag. Simple, effective.

It definitely gets the message across. The US flag kind of gets the message across too but it's too much work for someone who doesn't know about it. Israel's flag is like boom hey Jewish Homeland that's what we are. We ain't fucking around. There's no mistaking it.

But I know you don't like it. Sad. But that's why I like Japan too. Boom Land of the rising Sun. We got a sun, You see it coming towards you that means we're going to kick your ass...at least if it's pre-World War II.

The reason I like the Israel flag more than the Japan flag is the Israel flag has a second element to it:

The blue stripes are intended to symbolize the stripes on a tallit, the traditional Jewish prayer shawl.

The Japanese flag just needs more than one thing, in my opinion. They are more than just a land where the sun comes up.

Japan is a country famous for cherry blossoms, castles, samurai swords, and much more.
