I was still listening to FM in '99. WFNX (alternative), WAAF (active), WBOS (album rock) and a couple others. I discovered Disturbed in 2000 from FM radio (at midnight, before they got big).

There wasn't mass music streaming back in 2000. It was Napster and ScourExchange. In 1999, I was thrilled to burn a CD of songs taken from albums I didn't like that only had one or two good ones. THAT was a huge advancement forward!

KBCO was one of the first stations playing Melissa Etheridge before she got real big. Also played a lot of the local acts (Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Lumineers, Nathaniel Rateliff, The Fray) before they were introduced to the rest of the music world. And back before the Clear Channel days they'd play a lot of stuff you wouldn't hear on the radio anywhere else, before or since. Kind of reminds me of what KFOG in San Francisco was, or WXRT in Chicago is still today. Also a lot like what 'The Spectrum' on Sirius is today, big reason why that's #1 on my channels list in the app.

I assume these are internet channels? I know XM was working on tech before the merger to overlay commercials for 2 different versions of the same channel -- the thinking was that as for advertising. I haven't heard any more about it until now.

Well, other services offer both "free with ads" and "ad-free" versions of the same content. So perhaps someone knows how that works.
