My cat just gets wet food. 1/2 can in evening, the other 1/2 in morning. I have a tupperware container which surrounds the open can and it goes in fridge overnight. The dog gets kibble as needed. She is a grazer. I do the cat feeding and dog feeding and the morning and evening walks. My son does the afternoon walk and keeps the communal water bowl full. The litter box gets cleaned once a week. After the morning walk, the dog gets a dentalife stick. After the evening she gets ad container of Caesars (soft food) -- actually the walmart generic equivalent. When I refill the dentalife sealed container, I also give the cat some treats.

When I have Popeyes, the dog and cat are right there since I usually let them have the skin. I know its likely not the best for them but 2.5 years ago the vet told me the dog has only 2 years to live so I am giving her her best life even if it's not the best for her. She loves it. I think my son will let her get a french fry or 2. Other than that just pet food.
Let's continue this here.

The older dog (Penny) became food obsessed a number of years ago, but we limit scraps to keep her healthy. The 2 things she'll get is a piece of pizza crust, and the last bite of a bagel. The other one (Tali) is obsessed with Mrs. Scotch's nighttime popcorn.

Both dogs get a mini dog cookie after they go out. And they get some sort of chew when we leave them home.

You have the same birthday (not year) as my sister.

My cat is at least 20. He acts younger. My vet can't believe he is that old. He has gotten more cuddly as he has aged although he was always a cuddler.
I imagine any pet that lives with your wife can expect to have a longer than normal lifespan. From what you've told us, she seems like she's Way more involved than the average pet owner but also not over the line and into the crazy territory like those people she sitted for.

I think about that lady giving you that list of stuff to do with her dog way more than I should. I probably have thought about that once every like 4 days since I read your post. It really makes me laugh but also I would wind up in prison if I had to live with that woman for more than like a weekend.

Athena's like a pound or two overweight and I try to limit her to a quarter cup twice a day but it doesn't really seem to do much. Also, when I go to Disney I always leave her like seven full bowls of food and like 10 water dishes because I always consider the possibility that I'm going to get in a crash and die on the highway and I want her to have enough food to survive until someone figures out to go into my apartment. So that always ruins her diet.

I think you are attributing scotch's stories to me.

Oh shit, you're absolutely right. I thought I was quoting Scotch there twice.

You don't have Mrs. Scotch and you haven't told us much about how your wife was with the pets. I imagine she was great but I don't know. Mrs. Scotch has made it her job. So that's A step above regular people.

Also, your cat is Canadian, so maybe Canadian cats just live longer that seems like the most reasonable explanation.

You can't tell Pam or someone that in case you die, go get the cat?

Oh wow that's even crazier. Maybe I'm being sexist but you kind of expect women to be a little more over the top with pets than men. So the next logical step would be to go from like a little wacky of keeping a dog and a purse to straight up insane with that list.

But a guy making that list just baffles me. Do you know what he does for a living? I would guess it's something very detail-oriented like some sort of statistician. I mean someone that over the top wacky might even be an architect.

When Hendrik died and the inheritance stuff came into play, I made a will on my Aunt Sally and Uncle Paul's recommendation and I split everything 33.3% between my Aunt Sally, my Aunt Kathleen and my Uncle Paul. Anyway, they all made it clear they wouldn't want Athena but I made an agreement with Sally and Paul that they would find Athena an actual home and not let her wind up in any sort of pound. It's not written into the will because I'm not an insane person like that man Scotch's wife dealt with but it was a concern enough for me that I needed them to handshake agree to it for me.

I'm told he was a building contractor. He's now retired. So he spent his entire life making detailed lists.

Interesting. I picture him as the kind of guy who paints miniatures in his spare time or is obsessed with putting ships in bottles.

We did our estate planning earlier this year, and we actually named friends who will take the dogs if we die together in a plane crash. But that has nothing to do with feeding the cats. I guess what I'm saying is that you should have a friend or neighbor or relative with the casual understanding that, if you're dead, they should go check on the cat until such time that your last wishes are honored.

Our neighbor is taking care of our cats this weekend. And I understand that if you just plan to do a day trip, you don't need to have anyone check on Athena. But I think that someone in your life would know if you're dead, and go feed the cat; rather than leaving a week's worth of food out for her.

That all makes a lot of sense. I mean Pam would realize something was up within a day honestly within a few hours. How long are you gone this weekend? Both days Saturday and Sunday? Because your cat doesn't really need attention if you're only gone 2 days, but if you have someone willing to do it, it's best to give them some human interaction. I've left Athena alone for I think 4 days before was the maximum, maybe five but I'm pretty sure four and she was just fine when I got back. Also I have Nanny cams everywhere. Basically I bought this four pack of home cameras and so now when I'm not at home I can watch Athena to make sure she's good.

We'll be away for almost 3 days. Our cats need at least a once a day visit, to give them their morning food, water, and enough dry for the day. Twice a day is better, which allows for their dry food to get topped off for the night. Their moist food bowls need to be washed before the next morning's meal. And they won't eat dry food that's been sitting out for a day. Also, the litter boxes need to be done every other day, but we'll be back in time for that. Plus, they aren't used to being alone for days, so they need to see people.

The myth that cats have nine lives may derive from an Old English proverb: "A cat has nine lives. For three he plays, for three he strays and for the last three he stays." Here is a story that may lead people to think the myth could be true.

Another visit from the dog with the Type-A owner.

The dog (the one with the stuffed moose in her mouth)

A snippet of the 3-page instruction manual that came with her.
View attachment 9918

All for a 2 night stay.

Edit: I forgot to mention; to facilitate the feeding instructions, the owner has apportioned each meal into little square tupperware containers, with labels on each (as marked per the instructions). He also provides the large and small scoops, which are very nearly the same size.

Exciting news! The dog with the neurotic owners is back. And to celebrate, I thought I'd post page 2 of the owner's 3 page manifesto (complete with typos). Enjoy!
