Drivin N Cryin

Genre: rock

Discovered: FM

Other: 106.3 FM (aka B106) used to play my #1 and #2 below before changing formats. I really liked those songs but for whatever reason never tried to find more music from them - until the 2010s. I wish I had looked into them back in the 90s!

HIGH FIVE:

1. Fly Me Courageous
2. Build A Fire
3. Leavin' On A Jet Plane
4. Turn It Up Or Turn It Off
5. Powerhouse

Dr Dre

Genre: hip hop

Discovered: knew NWA already

Other: This guy (along with Jimmy Iovine) made 3 BILLLLLLLLLLLLION dollars when they sold Beats By Dre headphones to Apple. Dre cleared $500 mill personally from the deal.

1. Nuthin' But A G Thang (with Snoop)
2. She's The One (with Eminem)
3. Forgot About Dre (with Eminem)
4. Dre Day (with Snoop)

Duran Duran

Genre: new wave rock, alt-rock

Discovered: MTV

Other: In school I never admitted to liking these guys. For a little headbanger like me, it woulda felt like saying I liked New Kids or N Sync. Probably not accurate, but that's how I felt at the time.

HIGH FIVE:

1. A View To A Kill
2. The Chauffeur
3. I Don't Want Your Love
4. Come Undone
5. Ordinary World

Dust For Life

Genre: alt-metal

Discovered: sampler?

Other: Alice In Chains vibe. Poor dudes found out after their first album that their ‘untouchable’ earnings from publishing royalties had been spent frivolously without their consent.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Step Into The Light
2. Degrees Of Black
3. Dark Things Betray
4. Cycle Of Frustration
5. It Ain't Right

Eagles

Genre: rock & AC with a splash o' country

Discovered: Don't remember

Other: Casual fan as a kid and now. When I was 10 I bought The Long Run for my dad. Somewhere in my step-father's reel-to-reels is a 14-year-old me 'singing' along to the guitar solo in "Hotel California". A few years ago he said he'd found some reels with me on it and digitized them to MP3, but sadly that was not included.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Hotel California
2. Desperado
3. Life In The Fast Lane
4. Those Shoes
5. The Long Run

Earshot.jpg

Earshot

Genre: heavy rock, nu-metal

Discovered: sampler?

Other: First album has a cool underground rock sound with a Tool vibe. Got a little more mainstream after that. #4 below is their best known song. In 2019, with ticket in hand, I drove 2 hours to see them perform live. Got to the club and was told the show was canceled. I guess they sent an email, but I missed it. 4 hours of driving for nothin'.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Down
2. Get Away
3. Headstrong
4. Wait
5. Unfortunate

Easy Life

Genre: alt-pop

Discovered: I forget

Other: This is one of the few modern pop acts (with a very current sound) that I like. They formed in 2017. And I'm still old school - I own their CD.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Nice Guys
2. Earth
3. Sunday
4. Petty Crime
5. Peanut Butter

eazy-e.jpg

Eazy-E

Genre: hip hop, gangsta rap

Discovered: friend

Other: NWA founder's solo record (but still features everyone from NWA anyway). Classic gangsta rap. One of the pioneers. Got introduced to it in 1989 but didn't really get into it until 1993.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Nobody Move
2. 2 Hard Muthas
3. Ruthless Villain
4. We Want Eazy
5. Boyz N The Hood

Ed-Sheeran.jpg

Ed Sheeran

Genre: acoustic pop, singer-songwriter

Discovered: Looking for new music while writing a weekly music column for 411mania.com

Other: When I saw the song title "The A Team" my first thought was "Did someone actually write a song about the old TV show? The one with Mister T? I pity the fool that would do that!"

HIGH FIVE:

1. The A Team
2. Supermarket Flowers
3. Afire Love
4. Don't
5. You Need Me, I Don't Need You

Eddie Money

Genre: pop rock, rock and roll, rock

Discovered: probably FM

Other: Though none of its songs are in my top 5, the only album I have of his and like every song on it is Right Here (1991). I think it was overlooked and underrated. Singles: "Heaven In The Back Seat", "I'll Get By", "She Takes My Breath Away" and "Fall In Love Again".

HIGH FIVE:

1. I Wanna Go Back
2. Think I'm In Love
3. Two Tickets To Paradise

1. Red Wagon
2. Sundown
3. Bush
4. Peaches
5. Slow

I’m not sure what Red Wagon is about, but it sure is cheerful.

There‘s a lot of artists that I haven’t heard before showing up in these threads. Very cool.

3. It's You That Leaves Me Dry
4. EMF
5. Lies
