Sadchild's "high fives" (every artist I like at least five songs from)

Eminem

Genre: hip hop

Discovered: FM "My Name Is"

Other: Every once in a while I hear a song for the first time and it stops me dead in my tracks. When WFNX played "My Name Is" one afternoon, my jaw hit the ground and I had to know who it was. I had to 'warm up' to Eminem because his lyrics were so offensive, but also the product of a master wordsmith. The way his lyrics connect with each other goes so deep, especially in his latest stuff, that most people are missing more than half of the references he makes. He's gotten so good, he's started explaining those connections in his lyrics, otherwise people will miss most of them.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Insane
2. My Name Is
3. Role Model
4. Guilty Conscience
5. Still Don't Give A Fuck

It’s not just his use of rhythm and cadence when he weaves lyrics together, he’s almost orchestral with it.
He doesn’t seem to have been doing a lot lately. Has he cut back, or just not gettin air-play?

My favourite of his is "The Real Slim Shady". He is one of the few c-rapers I like. I have to thank my wife for discovering him. She is a fan of his too.

"Lose Yourself" is a favorite simply because it was played on all the alternative stations for a while. While not a huge fan, no denying he's talented. Same reason I listen to Lady Gaga's stuff.

He doesn’t seem to have been doing a lot lately.
In January 2020, he released Music To Be Murdered By (inspired by Hitchcock). While most of the music on it matches the bad rap music of the last ten years (it's no longer sampling cool rock and funk songs like they did in the 80s and 90s), he's still amazing. This song is not to be missed. By the end of it, I always have my jaw on the floor.

A few months ago he released Music To Be Murdered By Side B, which is basically the other half of what could be called a double album.

So he's still out there. But what's considered 'mainstream' and 'pop' right now is so effed up, he may be off the radar despite how unbelievable his rhyming and wordsmith abilities still are. Getting better, actually.

Enya

Genre: new age

Discovered: MTV "Orinoco Flow"

Other: It's rare I get the urge to drift into a Celtic coma, but when I do, she's my go-to. I felt like her latest album Dark Sky Island (2015) was glossed over and should have gotten more attention. #4 and #5 below are from it.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Orinoco Flow
2. Fallen Embers
3. Only Time
4. Echoes in Rain
5. So I Could Find My Way

Very cool.
I've got to stop reading these threads when I can't listen to the songs!

Evanescence

Genre: heavy rock, goth rock

Discovered: Daredevil soundtrack "Bring Me To Life"

Other: Loved the first album (and b-sides/unreleased songs from it) but got sick of it. Completely lost me on album 2. Album 3 is good. I found this interesting: Their record label insisted the group bring on a full-time rapper, and the band refused. After going back home and assuming they no longer had a record deal, the label contacted them again and a compromise was met – one song would feature a guest rapper, and that was “Bring Me To Life”.

HIGH FIVE:

1. My Immortal (Band Version)
2. Bring Me To Life
3. Going Under
4. Farther Away
5. Anything For You

This song is not to be missed. By the end of it, I always have my jaw on the
floor.
Daaammmmmmnnn!!!!!!

That’s insane!

I hadn’t heard that one before, but now that we’re talking about it, I do remember him releasing something about a year or so ago that was good.
There was chatter (internet fodder) before that about him sort of becoming a recluse or something.
I’ll be listening to that one again.
Because....damn.

Everything

Genre: according to MTV: "they have tossed bits of funk, ska, go-go and all sorts of other things into their modern-rock/jam-band hybrid."

Discovered: FM "Hooch"

Other: One hit wonder (though technically not even that, since "Hooch" only peaked at #69), but I like most of the songs on two of their albums. Great music for shooting pool. Tough band to search the internet about.... Google, show me "everything". Same problem with the band 'ALL'.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Hooch
2. Good Thing (St Lucia)
3. Spent
4. Be Gone
5. So Be It

Extreme

Genre: hard rock, funk metal ..... and two big acoustic hits

Discovered: MTV "Kid Ego"

Other: Loved (most of) the first two albums. Lost me on album 3.

They have a great story about the stupidity of record label people. Gary and Nuno wrote an unusually mellow acoustic song one fine day on Gary's porch, and included it on the album. Record label released two hard rock singles, then told the band the album is a flop, get back in the studio. Band tells label that at every show the entire audience sings the acoustic ballad back to them. Label says "Yeah, so? Get back in the studio. The album's a flop." Band insists they release it as a single. Label releases it to one radio station, it immediately becomes the most requested song. Label tests a second market, same thing happens. After a wide release, song goes to #1. Label releases the other acoustic song on the album and it goes to #4. Band records demos for next album. Label says, "Hey!!! Where's the acoustic ballad?!?!?!"

HIGH FIVE:

1. More Than Words
2. Kid Ego
3. Get The Funk Out
4. Nice Place To Visit
5. Money (In God We Trust)

My first reaction is "I have never heard of them" but then I played your video and I have heard of them. I have heard and like that song. Was not part of my library .... is now.

I mentioned this band about 5 hours earlier than you today, in my thread. Quite the coincidence.
