Extreme

Genre: hard rock, funk metal ..... and two big acoustic hits

Discovered: MTV "Kid Ego"

Other: Loved (most of) the first two albums. Lost me on album 3.

They have a great story about the stupidity of record label people. Gary and Nuno wrote an unusually mellow acoustic song one fine day on Gary's porch, and included it on the album. Record label released two hard rock singles, then told the band the album is a flop, get back in the studio. Band tells label that at every show the entire audience sings the acoustic ballad back to them. Label says "Yeah, so? Get back in the studio. The album's a flop." Band insists they release it as a single. Label releases it to one radio station, it immediately becomes the most requested song. Label tests a second market, same thing happens. After a wide release, song goes to #1. Label releases the other acoustic song on the album and it goes to #4. Band records demos for next album. Label says, "Hey!!! Where's the acoustic ballad?!?!?!"

HIGH FIVE:

1. More Than Words
2. Kid Ego
3. Get The Funk Out
4. Nice Place To Visit
5. Money (In God We Trust)

I liked their Pornograffiti stuff a lot, but one of my favorites comes from (I believe) the next album Three Sides to Every story. Song called Rest In Peace, which is a good song by itself, but comes with an epic Nuno Bettencourt solo.

Faith No More

Genre: alt-metal

Discovered: MTV

Other: I love Mike Patton as a vocalist, but I also like the pre-Mike Patton songs with Chuck "We Care A Lot" Mosley, who wasn't a great singer but he had spunk and the music is great.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Epic
2. Falling To Pieces
3. Midlife Crisis
4. A Small Victory
5. We Care A Lot

I learned how to play that over the Christmas break.

I forgot it already, but I like the song.

Rest in Peace is a favorite of mine. I used to know how to play More than words, and can remember 2/3 of it still. Hole Hearted has become my go-to when I pick up an acoustic guitar. For as hard as it was to learn Nuno's acoustic tunes, I don't stand a chance of playing his electric stuff. The dude cooks.

Fireside

Genre: heavy rock/radio metal (yes!), then emo/pop-punk (no!)

Discovered: CMJ

Other: I like their 1995 album Do Not Tailgate (and some of its b-sides). After that, they changed their sound to emo/pop-punk which I didn't like. Not that their '95 album is awesome either, but it's pretty good - and won a Swedish Grammy (aka Grammis).

HIGH FIVE:

1. Kilotin
2. Love Car
3. Not In My Palace
4. Interlace

I've mentioned that I saw them at Hampton Beach. What was interesting was comparing the 3 acts. Ernie and the Automatics opened (Ernie Boch's band), and they were like a good garage band.

Next was The Stompers, and they sounded more like a professional band. The Fools were the anchor band, and they had a super-slick, tight, punchy sound. Studio quality. It was just something I noticed.
