Great song to play!

One question though... without the benefit of a 12 string, are you able to give justice to the famous opening chord?
Doesn't Don Felder or Glenn Frey (I forget which) play 12-string on Hotel California. I've managed to get that sounding like a reasonable facsimile of the original on my 6-string Yamaha. 'Hole Hearted' by Extreme is one of those that could be played on a six, despite originally being played on a 12.

I'd love to have a 12-string myself but wouldn't know where to start since they seem to be rarer than lefty guitars around here.

The lefty is the trick. I was able to pick up a used 12 back in 87 or so. As fate would have it, I ran across the price tag this afternoon, while I was looking for something. Got it for $150 back then. It played well, then I tinkered with it some more, and it still plays great. Hole Hearted is fun to play. There are some tricky bits i there.

How do you know I don't have a 12 string? I could have a 12 string...

I don't have a 12 string. :)

Turns out it's a lot more than just an F chord on a 12 string: The 'A Hard Day's Night' opening chord | The Beatles Bible

The Beatles could never do anything the easy way. "Can we get a flock of ducks? Suppose we had the ducks quacking at the very moment that Ringo sounds the air raid siren and Paul drops his shoe."

My roommate and I used to sing Extreme songs in our dorm room in college. They have some tricky harmonies, which we butchered.

The harmonies were tight.
Nuno is a bad ass. One hell of a guitar player. There is a LOT going on in Whole Hearted, and it goes pretty quickly. Jon will have to wait till he gets his acoustic set-up again to tackle the fun parts.
I still remember how to play most of it. It's gotten really really sloppy over the years. Not like it was ever impressive the way I played it, but you could tell what it was.

More than Words was especially painful.

Get the Funk Out was a good 2 AM song when we'd had way too much too drink, but it was way too early to pass out.

At least the guitar is easy in that one.
For as pretty as it sounds, the lyrics are much more in your face than you would expect for a panty remover ballad.

That'll be this weekend if everything goes as planned. I'm taking it in on Saturday, the place I'm taking it charges $25-35 not including strings. I'll buy some strings along with it, a little lighter gauge I'm thinking, although not too small, wouldn't want to incur the wrath of the purists around here.

Glad you're taking it in for the work. You'll wish you had done it a long time ago.
Ignore the purists. Play what feels good. It'll keep you motivated, and you'll play more.

Really, don't go below 12s. You're delving into "losing your man card" territory here.

If it were an electric, I'd go with 9s or 10s. Since it's an acoustic, sound matters. 12s will probably do it. Mainly because I want to be able to play alternate tuning without sounding weak.

BB King plays really light strings--like 8s. But he's basically a one-trick pony and has been for a long time. Just plays the same old solos and licks. I guess when you're 102 (or whatever) and a living legend, you can play what the hell you want. In his own words, he doesn't do chords, so he just wants flexibility.

I have 10s on my electric. I tried 9s once I think, but they just felt flimsy. I like a little pushback.
