My main guitar is an Ibanez acoustic-electric AEF30.

After quite a few years, I decided today to get the amplifier down from the attic (shame), and play it loud.
Well... the amp sounds horrible. :(

Now I'm sitting here wishing extra money would fall in my lap so I could buy a new amp and a Gibson Les Paul. :)

Man, there are so many exceptional Les Paul copies being made, that it's not even cool to own a real Les Paul. You're paying for that signature and Gibson's marketing budget.

Amps are cheap, too, unless you want a tube amp. They're like leaves on a tree on Craigslist and eBay.

Nice axe! The line 6's that Jon is talking about are pretty solid for the dollar.

I'm no guitarist myself, but I thought this would be of interest. Popular new artist Courtney Barnett has some acoustic performances on youtube, in which she gets an amazing sound from her vintage Harmony Rocket lefty. This clip has her performing a couple of songs/ snippets, plus a bit of an interview.

I've been listening to Clapton's version of Call Me The Breeze (which is pretty frickin epic!) and that sounds like one I'd want to try.

This is pretty cool (if I had a Les Paul). I like to go with alternate tunings sometimes.

Gibson Guitar: Min-ETune™

"Min-ETune is a compact, battery-powered robot tuner that tunes your guitar in seconds—and delivers 80-100 tunings on one charge. Adjust the tuning pegs manually, turn on the Min-ETune to tune all six strings to perfect pitch automatically, or select any of 12 popular alternate tunings (including six you can program yourself). You can even adjust your guitar’s tunings to match other instruments."

Kind of Lucinda Williams-esque. I like it.

Harmony is a great American brand that was sold by Sears and other department stores. One model that I've always liked is the Catalina.

Cool video too. Chords are simple. You just need Clapton's voice and ability to pick a solo.

Keep saving your pesos (and working on your muscles)!

Some guys were talking about a similar product on the Acoustic Guitar Forum the other day:

You're an idiot. At least it went out in proper rock and roll fashion.
You're just figuring that out? Duh. It really was a shite guitar, even when it was new. And I did take care of it too. But for $30, it wasn't destined to last very long anyway.

I don't think you're an idiot. Somebody on eBay would have paid $100 for it because anything named Harmony, Silvertone, Kay, Stella, etc. (any of the old dept. store brands) is hot right now. I've played a couple and was never impressed because they all sound like boxes and need neck resets.

You did the right thing. It's better to burn out, than fade away...

This is worth a look. harmony guitar | eBay

"Harmony" is just a brand and they've made lots of guitar over the last 100 years, most middling at best, some very good. I mean, I have a "Recording King," which has nothing to do with the brand made by Gibson and sold by Montgomery Ward 70 years ago. It's a nice guitar with all the Martin appointments (forward-shifted scalloped bracing, bone nut & saddle, solid woods, etc.) but they could have put "Bieber" on the headstock and it would be just as much a "Recording King."

But companies pay a lot for these vintage brand names. The Music Link owns Recording King and The Loar (named for Lloyd Loar, the mandolin maker), while Saga owns Blueridge and some others. There is little connection between the guy who started these brands in his basement and the product today.
