The Musical Instrument Thread

Well.. now that I've learned more about the E-tuner system for the LP.. I just love it. It's great. Takes me from Open E to standard tuning in 15 seconds.

The guitar itself is fun to play. The action is soooo low and close to the fretboard; makes me feel like a better player than I'd otherwise be.

I got a lot more work to do to get back my old playing skills.

Something I have trouble with when going from acoustic to electric and back is the force required. Acoustic requires significant pressure from the fretting hand, especially down the neck, while volume is directly equal to the force applied by the strumming hand. On an electric, I have to remember to let the equipment do the work. The action is lower--no need to throttle a barre chord. Need more volume? Turn the knob.

Anybody up for a "Riff of the Week Challenge?"

We take turns picking a riff, have the week to learn it and then post a vid on the weekend.

I've been playing mostly ukulele and old time on the acoustic, so this would keep my rock chops in shape. Oh, it would have to be a rock riff. Did I mention that part? :)

If Jon, Aaron, SepticHeart (great name for a metal band) and/or anyone else out there are up for it, I propose the main riff to "All Right Now" by Free.

In other words, up through 7:14 in Justin Sandercoe's video here, but you can play whichever version you like. The original is two guitars anyway.

I'm learning more basic songs nowadays to get my technique back up to speed, stuff like Takin' Care of Business. I'm also practicing appregiated chords played in songs like House of the Rising Sun. Also looking at the work of some of my favorite rhythm players like Johnny Marr, who can turn rhythm guitar into an art form.

I like this idea.
I may not get around to posting a video (never uploaded a video before), but I have been practicing this riff.

What riff is next?

Well, I've been working on the Back in Black riff, and Basket Case by Green Day, which is all power chords. I thought I would look at Black Dog by Led Zep tonight.

My Tele is identical to the one Justin is playing in this video...but mine is a lowly Squier.

It's more like a work release program.
Or at least training for one.
Lots of hours in a basement picking up the same 40 pieces of trash over and over. If we get lucky, we'll find a backyard party to show off how well we do with garbage.
