i had an adventure today.

last night i noticed a smell in my condo. it smelled a bit like something burning but i have a smoke detector that didn't go off so i figured maybe it would just go away. then when i go to take a shower today the water wasn't very hot so i checked my water heater. after opening it up it turned out its thermostat had blown and that smell was some of the insulation burning. my a/c unit is right above my water heater so i guess some water dripped down onto it causing it to short. after a bit of research i found the model thermostat i needed and went and picked one up, installed it and now i have nice hot water again with no burning smell.

i know it's not the most complicated stuff but i'm still proud of myself for figuring it all out and installing it. i'm basically a certified handyman/electrician now.
What impresses me the most is this: for the entire time you did this, you had to put-off posting, streaming, surfing, gaming, downloading, etc. That's determination. :D

i seriously wanted to argue that i don't do all that too much but then realized that as i'm typing this i'm watching streams of both phish and string cheese incident shows (i switch back and forth muting either show) along with a 7 day zelda marathon twitch stream that has been going since tuesday and i just got done DL'ing girl on the train. all while twitter is constantly up on both my browser and phone. so i guess you may have a bit of a point.

My random thought for today ---- are the Grateful Dead One Hit Wonders? By any definition, Touch of Grey was their one and only top 40 hit. By that definition, they are one hit wonders. Although I don't think of them when I think of one hit wonders.

That is all.

I believe your definition of "one hit wonder" is incorrect.

Bands who don't write pop music, and who otherwise have sold millions of albums, are not judged by your criteria.

So if a group sells a million albums but has only one hit they cease to be one hit wonders?

By that definition, Dexy's Midnight Runners are NOT a one hit wonder ... and they have the quintessential one hit wonder single.

So what is your exact definition of "one hit wonder" since you don't like mine?

(Dexy's also is not a one hit wonder if you consider UK hits btw).

interesting question.

that's my first thought too.

i guess my definition of 1 hit wonder would be a band that's goal is to be a mainstream success and have one song that charts and then fades away. with the dead i don't think their goal was ever to be a chart topper and touch of grey just stumbled its way onto the charts.

Even though some define it as an artist with only one Top 40 hit, that seems too narrow a definition.
I'd qualify a One Hit Wonder as someone who is only known for one song.... Toni Basil, Baltimora...

Grateful Dead and Jimi Hendrix may have only had one Top 40 hit, but are remembered for many more songs.

Congratulations, you've created a perfect strawman argument, by disregarding half of my statement. There are hundreds of popular (by sales and fame) bands that don't play pop music, hence they'll never be in the Billboard top 40. If one of those bands has a "crossover hit" that makes the Billboard top 40, that doesn't instantly invalidate the rest of their careers.

If a pop band has only one pop hit from one album, they're one hit wonders.

I actually have no opinion on this. It was a passing random thought. A lot of 'pop' artists don't consider themselves as such. Some toil away never having a hit then they have that one, if the hit happens to be poppy are they one hit wonders?

Also, being called a one hit wonder does not necessarily invalidate anybody's careers.

I agree, this is not politics, let's all be calm.

I see how you'd find it interesting that these big name bands had only 1 hit. My point is that only pop music bands are judged by hits.

On some late night ad for a drug, I heard the warning "may cause or worsen heart failure."

Really? My heart failed, but then I took a drug and that made it worse? How could it be worse? It's heart failure.

It's shocking to say, but I had the same thought the 1st time I saw a commercial like that. Then I talked to several people who knew that people live for years with heart failure. I assumed heart failure meant death, but apparently not. So it goes, then, that there are degrees of heart failure. I'd recommend avoiding it altogether.

Last night I watched The History of Chicago on CNN
CNN Films: 'Now More Than Ever: The History of Chicago' - CNN.com

It was pretty good (for the 1st hour), but was even more devoid of insightful information than I expected. Nothing about the band members' childhoods, musical development, songwriting influences, etc. Also, no explanation for Peter Cetera's complete dissociation from the band after his departure.

But it did remind us of how many great, innovative songs they cranked-out consistently for about 7 years, and how talented each member of the band was. Of course, they were the favorite band of my childhood, so this interests me a great deal.
