I'd like to hear more about Mrs. IRBS working as a DJ.
She wasn't Mrs. IRBS at the time. She worked as a DJ in the 80s and 90s. She started out on XIL (WXIL) radio in Parkersburg, WV. This was a top 40 rock/pop station (may still be). It was THE top 40 station in NW WV in the 80s. She has/had a great DJ voice. She looses her southern accent completely if she switches to it. She want by the name "Robin Lane" on the air. She told me she was responsible for a couple songs being hits in her area. The local PD did not think "Tainted Love" or "My Girl (Gone, Gone, Gone) " were worth play and going to be hits. She (being slightly defiant and stubborn then too) decided they were and started playing them. Turns out she was right. They both made top 10 in the area.
She worked at other stations in NC & WV eventually graduating over to country radio. She met her second husband in one of those stations. She did the 9am - 2pm shift. He did the 6am - 9am shift. She was kind of having an affair with the DJ doing the 2pm-7pm shift. His wife was the receptionist and evidently not to bright. When she would call to leave a message she would say her name was Jenny and her number was 867-5309 so her hubby would know she had called.
Radio DJing is not as glamorous as it appears on WKRP or other shows. It is usually minimum wage with shitty hours and no benefits. When she was doing it, she often had to do here own engineering -- queuing up records, fading in/out of the records and mics, playing commercials on a cart. I think now a days its all computerized.
She did meet the program director of a Toronto radio station somewhere and when he found out her on air name he offered her a job if she wanted one. But she was raising a 4-5 year old son at the time and she was not a real fan of the 'lifestyle' so she declined.
