THE GOOD

There are a lot of good points so this section will be long.

The food was fantastic. There is more variety than Antigua. Barbados had more choices but this was a close second. My favourites were Butches and the Le Jardinier. My son's favourite was the Tipsy Turtle and Cucina Romana. We both liked Neptunes and the Pizza place (for lunch) as well as some Spices buffets. I enjoyed Spices for breakfast. We also enjoyed the Cafe Paris for ice cream and/or cookies.

We liked all the ones we went to except a few listed below. We did not do Neptunes or Spices for dinner so those are not included one way or the other. We did not like our dinner at Kiminos. The food was ok but I think our impression was from our chef. Of the 3 there, he was the least entertaining. I think they had mercy on us with the chopsticks because forks appeared about 1/3 of the way in by our sides which made it easier. We were also underwhelmed by the hot dog cart. It’s hours are theoretically every day from 11AM – 2PM but we only ever saw him there once (once we found out where to look – by Neptunes if you are interested).

The resort was very clean, very beautiful and the scenery was gorgeous. It is also the closest of any of the resorts I have been to the airport. It took 8 minutes to get to the resort and I think it would have been 4 if not for the speed bumps. The resort itself is right beside the runway. Antigua and Barbados were each about 15 minutes away and they seemed like an eternity in comparison.

We did a boat ride which was great. It took a lot of days to get it going because December is not the best season for water stability. We had red flags every day of our visit except for our departure day (figures). This does not apply to the enclosed swimming areas. They are enclosed by rock walls and only open for about 10 feet on the ocean side. The water was warm as was the air. Walking in or out of the water could be done with no shock and not even need the use of a towel. When you do go in the water you are almost immediately surrounded by little fish. I discovered the reason a couple days in. Apparently, they get fed pretty regularly by guests so they expect every guest to be source of food.

As I mentioned, the waters were rough. They were as rough as Barbados even though we were on the Caribbean side. I am told this is due to the season. December to March has rougher waters than the rest of the year. Again, I have no evidence of this just what the Sandals boat guy told me.

The staff was very friendly. Everybody saying hello and helpful if you were looking for something. I was able to visit the gym once and it had a nice treadmill. The building was not particularly air conditioned so I only went the once. Really worked up a sweat.

We did the Returning Guest Dinner. The way Grenada does it they have everybody group by the stage and then they do their presentations. These are same at every dinner. They give the new pin or gift for a level change and honour the guests with the insane number of visits. They also do their pitch for the Sandals Foundation. After the presentation, the General Manager came down and shook my hand and my son’s hand. Aside from those that were on the stage, we were the only ones. He said something but I was kind of shocked so I don’t recollect what it was. The only thing I can think of is that they actually put a note on the account about the circumstances with my wife. If that is the case, it was a very nice gesture.

This is the first trip I had in the lowest Sandals Class. I did not find myself wanting. The bars were plentiful and the service friendly (aside from some points below). I certainly loved having the Butlers at Antigua (2022), Royal Plantation (2018) and Royal Barbados (2019) and the concierge at Barbados (2017) but it was not a deal breaker by any means. I was able to finally train the drink guy to bring us the appropriate numbers of cokes and juices. The maids did a fine job and the front desk and their new loop service was available when needed.

There were plenty of bars and Strawberry Daquaries for me and Mango Daquaries (or cokes) were readily available when ever needed as were bottles of water.

I didn’t really spend much time at the pool. By the ocean they have a quiet pool. It is a pool and hot tub surrounded by loungers with no external music or activities. On the other side of the resort is the party pool. It is a pool and hot tub with a DJ and pool side bar and water volleyball court. We spent some time on the non-pool side of the bar waiting for the pizzas to cook for lunch. People seemed to be enjoying themselves as was I when they played some tunes that I recognized which was not always but seemed well mixed. Most of the music seemed well received by those there so it was obviously a good choice.

THE BAD

None of these points are deal breakers and we took them in stride and worked around them but they are all areas which could be improved in my opinion.

Island Time. Service at some of the restaurants seemed to suffer from this. They all suffered with this to a certain extent but the Tipsy Turtle and Neptunes seemed to be the worst.

I met some couples and the Returning Guest Dinner. One was from Britain and he never completely got off London time so he was up at 6AM every day and used that advantage to grab his choice of sunbeds. He also gave me a tip on an underused shady location to the left of Neptunes (looking towards the sea) where I was able to find a free shady bed every day subsequently. However, before that, I arrived at the beach around 8:30-9AM each morning. I found finding a shady lounger to be a challenge. Almost all were already taken about ½ by butlers. The rest by early risers. There were some beds available but most were in the sun. I did note that on Monday that only about 1/3 of the reserved chairs ever got filled.

I also found that finding towels was sometimes challenging at least around 8:30-9AM when I was coming down. I think the issue was mainly timing because when I went back later towels were well stocked.

On the first night, we had a plugged toilet. Happened about 6PM. I called for a plunger. After several calls to the front desk, and talking to the turn down maid and engagement of the loop-equivalent, I was repeatedly assured that there would be someone up. There was also no way for me to just get a plunger, it had to be a full-fledged technician which needed to be dispatched. About 11PM someone did finally show up and take care of the situation. A second guy came the next day. It was a bit annoying that it had to be such an issue. All we needed was a plunger.

The WiFi at the resort was horrible. There were times when you could not get a connection at all. Other times you had a connection but it would not transmit or receive any data so you had to recycle the connection. Most of the time, the connection was slow. I found my iPad worse than my phone. My son never got a reliable connection on his phone. He elected not to even try to connect his laptop. I did not buy an upgrade. I did that in Royal Barbados and did not really notice any significant difference. I did normal internet in Antigua and found it completely acceptable. It was not here and I did not think the upgrade would solve the issue.

I did not have to leave a card on file as I have at other Sandals and there was no $400 hold. But when I got my bill, I found there was a $2 USD / day charge on it in addition to my resort shop purchases. This was a tourist enhancement fee or something. I asked why it was on the bill now and not included in the price like these taxes/fees were at other resorts. I was told since it was an optional fee that they did it this way to give me the option. I did exercise this option and they removed those charges from the bill.

OVERVIEW

I loved this resort. I would go back if my situation was different. I find it difficult to order Antigua, and Barbados/Royal Barbados but this is definitely up there with them. If you are not disabled, I would recommend this resort in a heartbeat.

If there is something I have not covered feel free to ask.

I would think that many people looking into a similar vacation would appreciate the thorough and detailed review.

I see a lot of long reviews that are pretty bad. They complain about things without any explanation. And they blame things like their flight on the hotel.

I like reviews going in so I know what to expect. And I like to return the favour. I have gotten responses for example from people who had or their spouse had some disabilities and how Sandals used golf carts to transport the person from point A to B avoiding the hills and allowed them to use service elevators to avoid the stairs. All stuff I did not know and glad it is now shared. I think for my wife my observation stands as she was wheelchair bound. But somewhat more mobile, valuable information.

Good review IRBS.
It's very balanced.

Reviews that are either all "This place sucks. My shower dripped!" or "This is the best place ever!" don't do a lot for me.

Glad that you two had a good trip. I didn't realize that your son is 22! I guess it's been several years since I'd seen him last.

Been a while since I updated.

A couple of weeks ago I started having a sore shoulder. I figured it was a pullled muscle and started physio. But then I got numbness and pain in hand and lower arm as well. Saw a doctor. Got some ultra sounds and xrays and found out I have degenerated disks in my neck, a partially torn rotator cuff and arthritis in my shoulder. Working with altered physio to help with this. Doc says it can take up to a year to heal. No heavy lifting for that time. My hand is also pretty weak. Of course it is my right hand. My handwriting was never good but is now autorcious.

On a positive note, going to Saskatoon for a week on Saturday to visit my dad. Looking forward to that.

I visited my dad in Saskatoon. The visit was good. We got a blizzard on Saturday & Sunday. I was scheduled to return yesterday. But my flight was cancelled. They rebooked me to leave @ 6:30AM today via Vancouver but the first leg of that flight is delayed such that i would miss the connector to Toronto. Waiting for an agent to figure out next steps.

They got like 10 feet of snow in the western US. We had rain, then yesterday it was partly sunny and 58 degrees. No snow here.
Yes, this storm came from Montana. Its -19c (just below 0f) here now. It will be +13c (55f) and clear in Toronto.

I got booked on later flight via Vancouver. Had I just gone to the airport and called them I could have been on a 5:30AM direct flight. Oh well.
