When I was a teenager, we sometimes would drive 40 miles west of Regina and make trouble in Moose Jaw. But we weren't really trouble makers so it really wasn't that much trouble.

With Air Cadets I have been through Moose Jaw several times. There is an AIr Force base just south of the city.

I remember spending one night in a Moose Jaw hotel with Air Cadets (I forget the reason). It had a pool and I remember being in there with some girls and teasing each other about removing each others bathing suits. Unfortunately that never happened. There were chaperones but they really didn't have much control of the group.

As an adult, we visited the tunnels of Moose Jaw. Legend has it they were built by Al Capone during prohibition. There is much debate whether this is true. Likely just some local booze runners.

Moose Jaw had a rap for a place to go for "adult" entertainment (before my time). Now a-days you can get $2 coins in Saskatchewan. But back when they were paper, they were not used anywhere. I heard a phrase that was attributed to Moose Jaw as a kid: "Get off the table, Mable, the $2 is for the beer".

And that is pretty much all I know about Moose Jaw.
 
Is it my imagination, or has every winning player this week been the contestant on the right? And a bunch of winning from last place.
 
New season of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire started tonight. Larry David and his daughter were fun. But the dream team is Jeopardy super champ Jamie Ding and Ben Affleck. They got to the $250k level when time ran out.

Surprisingly, there was a question about a Spanish festival custom, where Ben had the right answer, and Jamie would've gotten it wrong. I guess their appearance concludes next week.

It's funny that 31-game Jeopardy winner Jamie Ding was grasping for straws on this. He chucked when the choice of "Babies" came up, and then he thought the answer was "Walking over hot coals", because he figured "El Colacho" meant "the fire" (it translates to "The Devil").

Ben Affleck knew the answer. Because last year, when Matt Damon correctly answered a question about eating grapes on New Year's Eve in some Spanish-speaking country, Affleck looked it up, and said he did research on Spanish customs.

During their run on Millionaire, there was an earlier question about a Billie Eilish song lyric, that was based on a quote from some historic philosopher. It was definitely a question that would've stumped 95% of contestants, but Jamie Ding knew it right away. So he got them to where they are now.

And in the previous round of the show, Larry David and his daughter had a question about things that were primarily supplied by India prior to the 18th century. Three of the choices were diamonds, cinnamon, and saffron (I forget the 4th, but it was obviously not it). They figured it was cinnamon or saffron (as did I), and called their lifeline - who was Jon Hamm - who said it was cinnamon. They guessed that, and were wrong. It was diamonds, which surprised just about everyone.

This concluded last night, with two tough questions for the million dollars.

The $500,000 question asked, “What achievement occurred just two months after a New York Times article said it wouldn’t happen for ‘one million to ten million years’?" The choices were: "splitting the atom", "cloning a mammal", "the first airplane flight", or "the Polio vaccine". Affleck actually helped with this one, although it was Jamie Ding's reasoning skills that confirmed the answer. I will leave this for you to guess.

As many others have, I find this fact about the above-referenced New York Times article baffling and interesting. Here's the crux of the 1903 editorial:

The machine does only what it must do in obedience to natural laws acting on passive matter. Hence, if it requires, say, a thousand years to fit for easy flight a bird which started with rudimentary wings, or ten thousand for one which started with no wings at all and had to sprout them ab initio, it might be assumed that the flying machine which will really fly might be evolved by the combined and continuous efforts of mathematicians and mechanicians in from one million to ten million years — provided, of course, we can meanwhile eliminate such little drawbacks and embarrassments as the existing relation between weight and strength in inorganic materials. No doubt the problem has attractions for those it interests, but to the ordinary man it would seem as if effort might be employed more profitably.

So it likens the development of a flying machine to the process of evolution in animals. Why? I don't know.

Yes, I think many people would've guessed that. Part of the difficulty of the question is that you don't know what time in history it's referring to. It really was a tough question.
 
In last night's second game of the Jeopardy Masters, Victoria Groce was robbed of a big daily double (and went to zero), because of a stupid technicality. And it was too late in the game for her to recover.

And here's the part about her "mistake":

Groce ran into some trouble when she found the second DD on clue 12 in “Festivals & Holidays.” She had 14,000 points and wagered all of her points. The clue was “The Fête Nationale du Quebec is also known as the day of this biblical purifying guy; respond en Francaise, S’il vous plait.”

“Who is Jon de Baptiste?” she answered. Host Ken Jennings said it was incorrect since the “de” was not needed. This dropped her down to zero. Fans thought Groce was robbed.
