The remake of Zelda Ocarina of Time came out today. The original came out in 1998 and it was my all-time favorite video game until 2017 when Zelda Breath of the Wild was released and unseated it becoming my new all-time favorite game. So you guys can see how much of a Zelda fan I am.
Ocarina is the all-time highest rated game on Metacritic at 99 out of 100. So I'm not super unique with saying I love it. But I do have an interesting story about playing it the first time that ties into a period in my life that was scary and sad.
I was in 9th grade for Christmas 1998. My aunt and uncle were going to take me on a cruise to Hawaii. We were going to helicopter over volcanoes and do all sorts of fun shit. This is when I was still living in Philly of course. So we got down to Coral Springs Florida where they lived and we all celebrated Christmas together. I was lucky enough to get the N64 with Madden and Zelda Ocarina of Time as the like "major" gifts. I was blown away with how the N64 could run games in 3D. I thought Madden looked just like watching the Eagles on TV. Haha.
A few days later my mother had one of her worst heart attacks ever. If you've read any of the Koopland thread I'm sure I've discussed how starting when I was in first grade, my mother was in and out of the hospital all the time with heart attacks. They were so bad they put her in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. She wasn't totally wheelchair bound but she was only able to walk like 5 yards at a time max before she'd need to sit down.
As I said, this heart attack was the worst I can remember, even more so than when she had open heart surgery when I was around 17. It was SOOOO bad that the doctors decided to put her in a medically induced coma for a while. I don't remember all the details because I was 14 in 9th grade, but I certainly remember that. As a result, the cruise was canceled and we were all just staying in Florida at my aunt and uncle's place. After a while my aunt and uncle had to go back to work and my dad would spend all day everyday at my mom's side. He didn't expect a 14-year-old be with him 12 hours a day so I stayed at my aunt and uncle's place with their awesome three dogs while they were at work and my dad was at the hospital.
All I did the entire time was play The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time. I never played the 2D games as a kid so this was my first experience with Zelda and it blew me the fuck away. It was the start of how (and remains to this day w/Zelda games) I get obsessive with them and have to find every single little hidden secret to 100% the game. Otherwise I just don't feel like I played the game right.
I played it for hours and hours and it was a nice escape from everything that was going on. Matter of fact, I'm pretty sure I had more fun doing that than I would have on a cruise.
Since the time I was in first grade when the heart attacks started happening, my mom would always come back from the hospital a few days later. My life was just: mom goes to the hospital and then she comes back. But at 14 I was beginning to be old enough to understand that like oh shit any one of these times my mom could just die. And being able to escape that new realization in this awesome video game helped me not think about that constantly.
The story ends with me flying solo back up to Philly and my best friend's parents took me in for a couple of months because my mom had to go to physical rehab for those months after she was taken out of the coma. By around April 1999 they came back up to Philly and everything went back to the "normal" version of her going to the hospital and coming back a few days later.
So I'm really looking forward to playing this remake. For everything I just explained along with how the modern, 4K remake of it is visually stunning.
