They should call it "Pit Viper". that is a cool ass name.

That is a super cool name.

That would sell a zillion more units. Can you imagine the Apple fans frantically searching the internet for all the latest rumors concerning the new "apple os code named 'PIT VIPER?"

My god, heads would explode.

Confirmed: "Pit viper" Update Kills Atom Hackintoshes

Or "How jobs lost his roots."

msi_wind_sad_mac.jpg

Just as we feared, the latest update to Snow Leopard, version 10.6.2, drops support for the Intel Atom processor. This means that anyone with a “hackintosh†who tries to update to the latest operating system version will see their computer die, going no further than the gray Apple logo on startup.
The reports are lighting up the various hackintosh forums, and OSx86 co-author Stellarolla sums it up thusly:
Well, looks like I was right, again. The netbook forums are now blowing up with problems of 10.6.2 instant rebooting their Atom based netbooks. My sources tell me that every time a netbook user installs 10.6.2 an Apple employee gets their wings.
It shouldn’t be long before some clever hacker figures out a workaround and releases a patched kernel to the world, re-enabling the OS on Atom based computers. But that’s not the story. The bigger message is that Apple has finally stopped ignoring the incessant buzz of the hobby-hacking, Mac netbook scene and instead pulled out a fly-swat and dealt it a whack. The war is officially on.
And ironically, this will only hit the hobbyists and tinkerers. Psystar, that other flea in Apple’s ear, is unaffected, as the fake Macs it sells do not use the Atom chip.
Bah Humbug!

I can only hope that the ghost of techs past will show up at jobs bedside and bring him back to his early days as a cutting edge hacker and cracker, that didn't' give a flying fup about how big corporations want their products used. (or the FCC for that matter)

You've confused Jobs with Wozniak. Woz was the hacker. Jobs was the guy who figured out how to make money from Woz's work.

You know what is strange is that many of these guys Jobs, Gates, they really aren't that bright at all. It was the people they had around them that that made them what they are. Many of them did reap the benefits too!

Completely irrelevant to the topic, but I thought I should point out:

Your sig says your netbook has 1.6 MHz... I'm pretty sure you mean GHz (otherwise, that's one SLOOOOW PC!) :p

(Same with your "MacBook Pro 2.27MHz + Mac Mini 2.0MHz"... Should be gigahertz.)

selling an illegal device for making free phone calls, even if woz made it, still means his financial philosophy sprung from making money from hackers.

Is Woz a Buddhist too?

-Captain crunch still wants his cut of apple.

His financial "philosophy" is and always has been: make money. Letting hackers avoid buying his overpriced hardware would run counter to that philosophy.

Then why ignore the form factor between mac book and iphone? thats the biggest growing segment of computers, and hes not making any money from it. -Seems counter to his money making stance.

How do being greedy and being a Buddhist fit together? or is the Buddhism part just more marketing?

It makes sense to me. The netbook market is dominated by low cost, thin margin hardware from high volume component companies. Jobs has never been about making a little bit of money for a lot of effort.

You'd have to ask Jobs.

Here is why Steve doesn't care about netbooks.

While Rivals Jockey For Market Share, Apple Bathes In Profits

Fastest growing != profitable or worthwhile for all businesses or business models. Is anyone actually making money from netbooks at this point in time? I don't know the answer but I'm betting more people are losing money on them than making it at this point.

You keep mentioning the Buddhist thing, but as far as I am aware, he has never claimed to be any sort of Buddhist or anything. A Buddhist married him once, but that doesn't make him a buddhist. He has a bit of hippie in him, but lots of other hippies make money, too. Steve cares about Apple and making money. In the process, he gives people nice products. If you don't want to pay for them, that's fine by him, too.

I'd actually argue that Steve Jobs is LESS greedy than a Michael Dell, because Jobs obviously doesn't want everyone's money - especially from the netbook crowd. Dell is in almost every segment of the PC market - Apple isn't. Dell will take anyone's money at any time - you can buy a netbook, a monitor, a server, and a printer with Dell slapped on the box.

The reason I said form factor, rather than netbook is that Jobs would never make an affordable ultramobile PC. I accept that @ apple.
For some reason he does not seem to want to make a 8-11" truly portable computer, whatever the premium. -but prevents those that would actually buy such an expensive device in that size range from even building their own.

Its the same problem I have with jobs shelving the zero force touchstream keyboard/touch pad rights, instead of producing, improving and profiting off them. If I thought I could build one of those, I would.
10 minutes on one of those things with full multitouch control without taking your hands off the keyboard and you would all be hooked! And all without need for a mouse.

Oh right, -that would kill the mickey mouse's,err.. I mean magic mouse's market. Seems a small price to pay to help alleviate the carpel tunnel pain and risks, and give us all a better interface option.

The old ones sell for around $1000 now. Seems like a perfect price point for jobs clientele.

You'd have to ask Jobs.
Im off to the Cupertino Buddhist Temple -BBL;)
