This week they have no teaser for next weekend. Is this the end of their countdowns?

Also, what was the date of the countdown? I see John Lennon at #6. His top 10 song basically became a #1 because of the death. Wonder if this countdown was prior or post 12/08?

Good 6
Ok 8
Bad 26

Last year we heard most of these, just one week off. Whole lotta 'yawn rock'.

35. LOVELY ONE - THE JACKSONS

First time hearing this song, not bad. Kinda fun.

34. ONE STEP CLOSER - DOOBIE BROTHERS

The Michael McDonald years. Oof.

29. I BELIEVE IN YOU - DON WILLIAMS

This just in, Don Williams doesn't believe in organic food.

25. SEQUEL - HARRY CHAPIN

Interesting how rappers get edited for radio when they talk about drugs, but this unedited song is about being stoned in the back seat AND behind the wheel of a taxi.

And me, I'm flyin' in my taxi, takin' tips and gettin' stoned

You see, ten years ago it was the front seat drivin' stoned and feelin' no pain

24. THEME FROM "THE DUKES OF HAZZARD" - WAYLON JENNINGS

tumblr_okjbqcLkwH1u501aoo1_400.gif

22. DEEP INSIDE MY HEART - RANDY MEISNER

Aside from the dubstep synth, I thought this sucked. Even ripping off "Running On Empty" couldn't save it.

21. EVERYBODY'S GOT TO LEARN SOMETIME - THE KORGIS

Sounds like Pet Shop Boys without the dance beat.

12. YOU'VE LOST THAT LOVIN' FEELING - DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES

My fav group in my pre-teen years and loved them straight up through to the early 90s, but this cover.... meh

Won't make the top40
#46 Bob Seger "The Horizontal Bop"
#48 Cheap Trick "Stop This Game"
#51 Babys "Turn And Walk Away"
#52 Pointer Sisters "Could I Be Dreaming"
#64 Rockpile "Teacher Teacher"
#66 Queen "Need Your Loving Tonight"
#87 David Bowie "Fashion"
#91 Pete Townshend "Rough Boys"
#98 Eric Clapton "Blues Power"

Got to listen to the intro with tonight's replay. Chart was from 12/06 2 days prior to his death.

And they fixed their closer. Next week from 1989.

Won't make the top40
#46 Bob Seger "The Horizontal Bop"
#64 Rockpile "Teacher Teacher"
#87 David Bowie "Fashion"
#91 Pete Townshend "Rough Boys"

All these got lots of airplay up here in 1980. The Seger and Townstead tunes also have gotten plenty of play on classic rock stations as well. So surprised they didn't do better.

Late 1989: I moved into my first apartment. I moved out a few weeks later (dishonest roommate). Moved into a room for rent out of someone's house, and moved out a couple weeks later (the family had a huge drunken argument, I almost called the cops). Then landed my 3rd place to live - that one thankfully worked out. #thirdtimesacharm

Good 16
Ok 9
Bad 15

40. JANIE’S GOT A GUN - AEROSMITH

"She had to take him down easy and put a bullet in his brain leave him in the pouring rain." #editedversion

37. I’LL BE GOOD TO YOU – QUINCY JONES RAY CHARLES CHAKA KHAN

Awful. And it went on for-freakin-ever.

36. THE ARMS OF ORION – PRINCE (WITH SHEENA EASTON)

Not that it's a fantastic song but it holds a special place in my heart. For my first girlfriend and I, it was 'our song'. And the b-side "I Luv U In Me" was special to us too.

32. POISON – ALICE COOPER

In the middle of this song, my 12 year old son says, "This sounds like Nina Blackwood." LMFAO

30. DOWNTOWN TRAIN – ROD STEWART

Don't watch the original Tom Waits version music video. What a weirdo.

27. OH FATHER – MADONNA

I like this song. But I remember playing it for a roomate once and about a minute in, she rolled her eyes and said, "Oh is Madonna pretending to have been abused now?"

21. JUST BETWEEN YOU AND ME – LOU GRAMM

I've always really like this one. I may be the only person on Earth who still really digs it. I never hear it anymore (except when a station is forced to play it, like on an old countdown for example).

17. LOVE SHACK – THE B-52’s

Oooooooooooooooooverplayed

16. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO LIVE WITHOUT YOU – MICHAEL BOLTON

Even my wife asked me to skip this one.

15. EVERYTHING – JODY WATLEY

The album cover came up on the Sirius web player and my wife said the exact thing I was thinking at that moment... she looks like she ripped a piece of Big Bird's costume off and wrapped it around herself.

Jody_Watley_-_Larger_than_Life.jpg

13. THIS ONE’S FOR THE CHILDREN – NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK

Barf

7. PUMP UP THE JAM – TECHNOTRONIC
4. BACK TO LIFE – SOUL II SOUL FEATURING CARON WHEELER

Dat early-nineties-sound starting a few weeks early.

I can't do the "won't make the top 40" because Billboard's site is messed up. There are a ton of songs that have their current week's position as their "peak", but when you look them up, they actually peaked higher. For example, Motley Crue's "Kickstart My Heart" is at #51 and it says it peaked at #51, but it actually peaked at #27.

We didn't have an '83 countdown around this time last year, nice to not hear a bunch of repeats.

Good 16
Ok 9
Bad 15

40. IN THE MOOD - ROBERT PLANT
24. CRUMBLIN' DOWN - JOHN COUGAR MELLENCAMP
20. IN A BIG COUNTRY - BIG COUNTRY
16. SYNCHRONICITY II - THE POLICE
15. CUM ON FEEL THE NOIZE - QUIET RIOT
12. TALKING IN YOUR SLEEP - THE ROMANTICS
4. OWNER OF A BROKEN HEART - YES

I have an ongoing list of my (approximately) 500 fav songs of all time. It's rare that 1 or 2 show up on one of these VJ Big 40s. all 7 of these were hits in late 83.

35. THE SIGN OF FIRE - THE FIXX
33. STAY WITH ME TONIGHT - JEFFREY OSBORNE
30. AIN'T NOBODY - RUFUS WITH CHAKA KHAN

Totally forgot these existed.

24. CRUMBLIN' DOWN - JOHN COUGAR MELLENCAMP

For more than a decade, I thought the line was "And I don't mind being down with a boy. I've had that pleasure for years and years." So, I thought Johnny Cougar was bi until the late 90s.

15. CUM ON FEEL THE NOIZE - QUIET RIOT

This is my favorite guitar solo of all time (not the edited version they played on this countdown, the full solo).

14. MAJOR TOM (COMING HOME) - PETER SCHILLING

Classic space rock from 1983. So is Planet P "Why Me" (also '83)

13. CHURCH OF THE POISON MIND - CULTURE CLUB
3. UNION OF THE SNAKE - DURAN DURAN

I've always hated these two songs.

10. BREAK MY STRIDE - MATTHEW WILDER

Wrote a lyric in one of my songs "Every time you break my stride..." I was hesitant to do it because of this "breaka my stride" song, but left it in anyway. Sure enough, every time our singer (at the time) sang it live, he said "Every time you - ain't nobody gonna breaka my stride..."

Won't make the top 40
#51 Bonnie Tyler "Take Me Back"
#55 Eddie Money "Big Crash"
#61 Night Ranger "You Can Still Rock In America"
#65 Talking Heads "This Must Be The Place"
#66 Kiss "Lick It Up"
#75 Rainbow "Street Of Dreams"
#82 Prince "Let's Pretend We're Married"
#86 Rodney Dangerfield "Rappin' Rodney"
#96 Paul Simon "Allergies"

Not as much as Pete Townshend’s Rough Boy

Tough boys
Running the streets
Come a little closer
Rough toys
Under the sheets
Nobody knows her
Rough boys
Don't walk away
I very nearly missed you
Tough boys
Come over here
I wanna bite and kiss you

Rappin' Rodney is super-dated, but I still listen to it once in a while for fun (like "Born In East LA" and "You Look Marvelous"). Best line: "I called suicide prevention and they put me on hold! (No respect! No respect!)"

Kiss peaked this week at that #66 position. Felt a little low, but probably because it didn't crossover to pop. Night Ranger's ultimate peak was #51, that seems about right to me. Like "Lick It Up" it probably didn't crossover to pop either.

Re: Pete Townshend, that's interesting. Made me want to look deeper. This is from Songfacts.com:

This started rumors that Townshend was gay or bisexual. In the November 14, 1990 issue of Newsweek, Townshend explained: "I know how it feels to be a woman because I am a woman, and I won't be classified as just a man." Regarding "Rough Boys," he said, "In a way it was a coming-out. That it was a real acknowledgment of the fact that I'd been surrounded by people that I really adored - and was actually sexually attracted to - who were men. And that the side of me that responded to those people was a passive side, a subordinate side."

Roger Daltry then rushed to do damage control, according to the book Behind Blue Eyes: The Life of Pete Townshend

It’s amazingly horrific how bad some of the songs were in my 18th year of life.

To the dismay of IRBCS, I wholeheartedly enjoyed Bobby Brown and the New Jack Swing of the late 80s. Even tho I didn’t even know what New Jack Swing was until a few years ago.

I love this song. It has a Starship kind of vib. I would see Grace Slick singing this.

It is so much better than this song…

Now this song is horrible. It’s a channel changer. Yet it continues to be played daily on many 80s music channels.

How many people used this as their first dance song at their wedding reception, and look back now and can’t believe they did that?

Actually, I have never heard Bobby Brown before today (at least that I remember). He happened to be on as I scanned the countdown. The 20 seconds I listened to were enough for me to last the rest of my lifetime. Glad you enjoyed him. Somebody must have since he made it to #2.

That 20 seconds is also the full length of time I have listened to this countdown this week. 1988 & 1989 are mostly wastelands with 4-5 good songs scattered among 35 bad ones so I tend to just not listen.

Heard a bunch of these last December (12/10/88 countdown) and last January (1/7/1989), so I've already commented on a bunch of them previously.

Good 14
Ok 10
Bad 16

35. STRAIGHT UP – PAULA ABDUL

I'm with Paula's mum on this one. Shoulda left it in the trash can.

15. I DON’T WANT YOUR LOVE – DURAN DURAN

In '88, this song felt ahead of its time. After Notorious ('86) the band seemed to want to redefine itself and made some brave moves. Some worked. Some didn't. I think this one did. However, nothing after the Wedding Album ('93) is worth a damn to me aside from the first two singles from All You Need Is Now ('10).

6. TWO HEARTS – PHIL COLLINS

He has written many great songs, but sometimes he writes the cheeeesiest stuff. This and his cover of "You Can't Hurry Love" just befuddle me.

2. MY PREROGATIVE – BOBBY BROWN

Whodathunk a song with a word like 'prerogative' would be such a huge hit. What's the follow up single... My Antidisestablishmentarianism??

Won't make the top 40
#48 Tracy Chapman "Baby Can I Hold You"
#56 Fleetwood Mac "As Long As You Follow"
#59 Traveling Wilburys "Handle With Care"
#63 Siouxsie & The Banshees "Peek-A-Boo"
#64 Georgia Satellites "Hippy Hippy Shake"
#65 Alphaville "Forever Young"
#69 DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince "Girls Ain't Nothing But Trouble"
#81 Starship "Wild Again"
#83 Timelords "Doctorin' The Tardis" (later known as KLF)
#95 Sir Mix-A-Lot "Posse On Broadway"
