Very good for a 1982 countdown, probably because it's so close to 1983

Good 13
Okay 8
Bad 19

36. THE GIRL IS MINE - MICHAEL JACKSON AND PAUL MCCARTNEY

These two are disgustingly polite about this situation. Perfect friggin' gentlemen. Discussing over tea and crumpets about how "The doggone girl is mine"....?? What a terrible lyric.

31. THE LOOK OF LOVE - ABC

I've always loved the way he sings, "I don't know the answer to that question!"

30. ROCK THIS TOWN - STRAY CATS

You look at me once. You look at me twice. You look at me again and I'm gonna sit down with tea and crumpets and tell you the doggone girl is mine.

29. GET CLOSER - LINDA RONSTADT

Interesting time siguature.

28. ATHENA - THE WHO

The more I hear about Pete Townsend, the less I like him. The VJ story was about how he was hitting on a married woman while drunk, and he had to work with her the next day in the studio.

21. NEW WORLD MAN - RUSH

I can count 20 Rush singles I like better than this one starting from 1975's "Fly By Night" all the way up to 2012's Headlong Flight" so it surprises me that this is their only top 40 in the US.

15. THE ONE YOU LOVE - GLENN FREY

I hear that sax riff in my nightmares. Sexy sax man should start playing this instead of "Careless Whisper"

14. STEPPIN' OUT - JOE JACKSON

I think I'm in the minority here, but I've always hated this song.

Will never reach the top 40
#41 Donna Summer "State Of Independence"
#46 Missing Persons "Destination Unknown"
#54 Charlene "Used To Be" (peaked at #46, so not a one-hit wonder?)
#62 Grandmaster Flash "The Message"
#63 Eddie Money "Shakin'"
#74 Go-Gos "Get Up And Go"
#78 Bill Conti "Theme From Dynasty"
#80 Fixx "Stand Or Fall"
#82 Judas Priest "You've Got Another Thing Comin'"
#86 Scandal "Goodbye To You"
#89 Robert Plant "Pledge Pin"
#92 Cheap Trick "She's Tight"
#94 Paul McCartney "Tug Of War"
#96 Talk Talk "Talk Talk"

#54 Charlene "Used To Be" (peaked at #46, so not a one-hit wonder?)

The other song she did was top 40 so if you use that as a criteria, yes she is a one hit wonder. But clearly most people tend to not use actual chart positions for their definitions but their memories of the other hits.
#63 Eddie Money "Shakin'"
#86 Scandal "Goodbye To You"
#96 Talk Talk "Talk Talk"

Given that I hear these on satrad and FM today, I am surprised at all of their low peaks.

30. ROCK THIS TOWN - STRAY CATS

You look at me once. You look at me twice. You look at me again and I'm gonna sit down with tea and crumpets and tell you the doggone girl is mine.

That’s me and Aaron

#63 Eddie Money "Shakin'"

Hey. He’s dating my cousin. That crazy gringo.

No. But this was one of the first videos I saw on MTV.

1982 music video = cheese

Just to make sure it's known, I post the positions of those songs each week on the chart being counted down, not their peaks.

Here are their peaks:
#63 Eddie Money "Shakin'" PEAK #63
#86 Scandal "Goodbye To You" PEAK #65
#96 Talk Talk "Talk Talk" PEAK #75

Even still, definitely low peaks for such popular songs!

30. ROCK THIS TOWN - STRAY CATS
I've never been able to reconcile the Stray Cat lyric "There's a real square cat livin in 1974" That's 20 years more up to date than the Cat's were. I love Setzer's playing, but there's a little irony there.
21. NEW WORLD MAN - RUSH
This song hit when I was at just the right age in high school. It'll always work for me.

46 Missing Persons "Destination Unknown"
A little surprised.
63 Eddie Money "Shakin"
Really surprised.
80 Fixx "Stand Or Fall"
A little disappointed.
82 Judas Priest "You've Got Another Thing Comin'"
Shocked.
86 Scandal "Goodbye To You"
Pretty surprised. That song was everywhere that year.
92 Cheap Trick "She's Tight"
Thought it would have been a little higher. I just love that song. My band still plays it. Simple. Straight forward. Cheap Trick.

This just reinforces the truth that real rock music is not pop, and going back the invention of the top 40, there's always been this dichotomy. I hate when people (i.e. Howard Stern) act like this is new.

14. THE ONE I LOVE - R.E.M.

Michael Stipe never lip synced a song until Losing My Religion.

A song about groupies. A simple prop to occupy my time.

Not sure if Fire implied the burning sensation from an STD or not.

The One I Love by R.E.M. Songfacts

BTW, in the UK, maybe in Canada, too, they call them STIs. Sexually Transmitted Infections.

30. U GOT THE LOOK - PRINCE

I guess you can now watch and listen to Prince’s videos on YouTube now

I never heard this song until two years later, in 1989, when I was stationed in Okinawa. A roommate of mine, Timothy Thomas loved Prince and watched Sign O’ the Time about once a week. He had a thing for Sheena Easton.
