Yes "Tonight I Celebrate" is another prime candidate for the B&B for sure!

My only surprise in the never top 40s this week is ZZ Top. Woulda sworn it was bigger. And it's a classic.

I've had some potential choices that were off by more than a year. Here were my candidates for 1984 last July:

Ray Parker Jr "Ghostbusters"
#1 PEAK - #2 THIS WK

John Waite "Missing You"
#1 PEAK - #29 THIS WK

Prince "When Doves Cry"
#1 THIS WK

Cyndi Lauper "Time After Time"
#1 PEAK - #53 THIS WK

Cars "Drive"
#3 PEAK - UNCHARTED THIS WK

Lionel Richie "Hello"
#1 PEAK - #75 THIS WK

Falco "Rock Me Amadeus"
#1 PEAK MAR 86

As you can see, my last one was waaaaay the heck off. Don't know what I was thinking. I'm so glad I went with "Ghostbusters" that week.

I missed ZZ Top. That is a surprise indeed. It was the #84 song on the Classic Rewind Top 500 of all time. It was their highest ranking song in that countdown.

Here is my big memory of that number-one song. I'll pause for a few seconds while everyone says, "Who cares?" In the first episode of Punky Brewster (September 16, 1984), Penelope "Punky" Brewster had been abandoned by her mother and was staying with her dog Brandon (named for NBC President Brandon Tartikoff) in an empty apartment. When photographer/apartment manager Henry Warnimont discovered her, she was listening to her boombox and dancing to [i[]Maniac[/i]. In June 2019, NBC/UCP announced plans for a new Punky Brewster series. Punky will play a single mother of three who befriends a young girl who is just like Punky used to be. Awww.

As for Michael Sembello, he had only one other chart hit, Automatic Man, which reached #34 in November 1983. He released six other singles, including this one from May 1984 (erroneously shown as 1985 on YouTube): Mega Madness from the comedy-horror film Gremlins:

14. I HATE MYSELF FOR LOVING YOU - JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS

I suggested to my band we throw this in as a cover. Again I was told it's too obscure. I think they're nuts. The last one I suggested - Til Tuesday "Voices Carry" - they said the same thing.

12. ANOTHER PART OF ME - MICHAEL JACKSON

My guess for #1. I thought it was a chart-topper but it only peaked at #11. Five of Bad's songs did hit the top, but this wasn't one of them.

9. LOVE BITES - DEF LEPPARD

My friend's son's pick for #1. He won. The third person who plays, and so far had picked the #1 song every single week he's played, picked a song that peaked in 1990. That was pretty weird and very unexpected.

4. DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY - BOBBY MCFERRIN

This was one of my potential choices. I shoulda gone with this one.

#89 Robert Plant "Ship Of Fools"

Only peaked at #84?? That's a travesty!

#99 Foreigner "Heart Turns To Stone"

Surprised this wasn't top 40 too. Peaked at #56.

Will never make the top 40
#48 Stevie B "Spring Love"
#50 Al B Sure "Off On Your Own"
#53 Midnight Oil "The Dead Heart"
#54 Blue Zone UK "Jackie"
#57 Dino "Summergirls"
#61 Freddie Jackson "Nice 'N Slow"
#63 Olivia Newton-John "The Rumour"
#65 Jeffrey Osborne "She's On The Left"
#67 Cover Girls "Inside Outside"
#69 Fabulous Thunderbirds "Powerful Stuff"
#70 Jane Wiedlin "Inside A Dream"
#72 Keith Sweat "Make It Last Forever"
#74 Glenn Medeiros "Long And Lasting Love"
#77 Toni Childs "Don't Walk Away"
#79 Holly Knight "Heart Don't Fail Me Now"
#80 Vanessa Williams "The Right Stuff"
#81 Depeche Mode "Strangelove"
#83 10,000 Maniacs "What's The Matter Here?"
#84 Kim Wilde "You Came"
#85 Henry Lee Summer "Hands On The Radio"
#88 Will To Power "Say It's Gonna Rain"
#89 Robert Plant "Ship Of Fools"
#90 Book of Love "Pretty Boys And Pretty Girls"
#92 Sweet Sensation "Never Let You Go"
#97 Paul Carrack "Button Off My Shirt"
#98 JJ Fad "Way Out"
#99 Foreigner "Heart Turns To Stone"
#100 Crowded House "Better Be Home Soon"

They are nuts. It's a great song.
I keep bringing it up to my band to cover too.
They say cool, but we never get around to doing it.

It is. I never pictured it breaking the top 40 though.

That one doesn't surprise me.

Heard this exact same countdown two years ago. Here are my old comments.

Short show. I listened Friday at 9. It was done by 11:43. Alan didn't participate, so they'd let four songs go by at a time with no commentary.

21. Someone That I Used To Love - Natalie Cole

Nina called it "Someone That I Used To Know". Gotye mash-up?

I cracked up when Natalie sang 'refyoooOOOZED' #suuuEEEE

12. Woman In Love - Barbra Streisand

My pick for #1 this week.

11. Xanadu - Olivia Newton-John/Electric Light Orchestra

The only other pick I came up with. I could only think of two. In 1980, I turned 10. Wasn't really hip at the time. But neither was the music apparently.

6. Late In The Evening - Paul Simon

In their ever-changing definition of a hit, MG called "Late In The Evening" the only hit from One Trick Pony. The title track peaked at #40. Not a hit?

5. Lookin' For Love - Johnny Lee

gdc97.jpg

3. Another One Bites The Dust - Queen

A couple months ago I chose this as my guess for #1. Shoulda picked it this time around.

2. All Out Of Love - Air Supply

849ec66b71f5b46eaaf54fdc6fd56492.jpg

1. Upside Down - Diana Ross

My friend's son picked this one. He's won 7 out of the last 9 weeks. The two weeks he lost, he still picked the #2 song. Crazy.

#48 Peter Gabriel "Games Without Frontiers"
#54 Split Enz "I Got You"
#60 Genesis "Turn It On Again"
#95 Pat Benatar "You Better Run"

Still shocked these didn't reach the top 40.

#58 Kings "Switchin' To Glide/This Beat Goes On"

Actual lyric: "I don't give a hoot about what people have to say". Now all I can think of is Woodsy The Owl.

#78 Eddie Money "Running Back"

Wasn't expecting reggae from the Money-man.

#90 Frank Stallone "Case Of You"

Why?! Why would he ruin this Joni Mitchell song?!

Will never reach the top 40
#41 Linda Clifford "Red Light"
#47 Ray Goodman & Brown "My Prayer"
#48 Peter Gabriel "Games Without Frontiers"
#54 Split Enz "I Got You"
#55 Journey "Good Morning Girl/Stay Awhile"
#56 Chicago "Thunder And Lightning"
#57 O'Jays "Girl, Don't Let It Get You Down"
#58 Kings "Switchin' To Glide/This Beat Goes On"
#60 Genesis "Turn It On Again"
#63 Amii Stewart & Johnny Bristol "My Guy/My Girl"
#64 Earth Wind & Fire "Let Me Talk"
#65 Ali Thomson "Live Every Minute"
#66 Allman Brothers Band "Angeline"
#74 Commodores "Heroes"
#78 Eddie Money "Running Back"
#87 Kurtis Blow "The Breaks (Part 1)"
#88 Dynasty "I've Just Begun To Love You"
#90 Frank Stallone "Case Of You"
#91 Chic "Rebels Are We"
#95 Pat Benatar "You Better Run"
#97 Deliverance "Leaving LA"
#98 Jay Black "The Part Of Me That Needs You Most"
#100 Mickey Gilley "True Love Ways"

#58 Kings "Switchin' To Glide/This Beat Goes On"

This one was and still is big in Canada. As an aside, the drummer for this song goes to my church. He does drums in church plays and his band plays church dances. He is the closest thing to a rock and roll icon I know. He left the Kings shortly after this album was released. If you watch the video you can see him in about 2/3 of the shots. The replacement drummer is in the other shots.
