I should note – and you all know I'm not the noter I used to be – that Drake had 25 top-ten hits and eight number ones in that ten-year span. His first top-ten hit in 2013 was Started At The Bottom. Let's have a show of hands: Who wishes he had stayed there?

In the 80s and 90s, and most of the early 2000s, I could always find a handful of songs on the Hot 100 that I like.... or at least know. Sometimes I'd like 20, sometimes I'd like a few. I'd at least know a dozen every week, even on a bad week.

Last night, my son pulled up the Hot 100 and I didn't recognize a single song on it. I recognized a half dozen artists' names, but not a single song.

Yeah sure "I'm old" - but at the same time, if we played clips from those 100 songs for a dozen teens in the town I live, how many songs would they know? Bet it's less than 10. Back in '85, my entire class probably knew every single top 40 hit every week!

Look at some of the titles on this week's chart: Kill Bill, Anti-Hero, Creepin', Unholy, Under The Influence, Super Freaky Girl, Cuff It, On Wat U On, KIng Snipe, Romantic Homicide, Seek & Destroy. I haven't heard any of these songs – and judging by the titles, I don't want to hear them. And Flowers, Miley Cyrus' latest single, debuted at number one. Of course it did.

Same. I asked my 16 year old how many of the “Grammy best new artist” candidates she recognized from the upcoming awards show, and … not very many. And mostly just name only.

I'm Casey Kasum. Topping the Hot 100 for the 8th week in a row is a song pushed onto streamers as a recommendation - but nobody knows how, why, where it came from or if a human was even involved in any part of its creation.

That latest earworm you cant get out of your head? It might have been written by a robot.

Turns out, AI-generated songs are taking over conversation in the music industry. Over the past week and a half, mainstream names like Drake, The Weeknd, Beyonce, and Rihanna have all been involved, in some way or another.

Aside from the technology's ability to, in theory, recreate any song across the history of recorded music, there is another unsettling situation unfolding: Songs, seemingly created by AI, are being uploaded to streaming services and recommended to listeners — but no one can figure out how they got there.

On April 16, 2022, Harry Styles hit #1 with "As It Was".

It's held the #1 spot on these subsequent weeks:

4/16

4/30
5/7

6/4
6/11
6/18
6/25

7/9
7/16
7/23

9/3
9/10
9/17
9/24
10/1

In May 2023, it sits at #20, up one spot from last week.

When I hear about newer songs "breaking records on the Hot 100", I call bullshit. None of this new garbage is outdoing music by Elvis, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, etc. It's an easily manipulated chart (as explained in earlier posts).

Bing Crosby had 372 chart hits. Three hundred seventy-two! That includes songs he recorded as lead vocalist with Paul Whiteman, Gus Arnheim and other bandleaders; duets with Gary Crosby, Bob Hope, the Andrews Sisters and others; and many reissues of Silent Night, White Christmas, Mele Kalikimaka and I'll Be Home For Christmas.

Bing's most recent chart entry is a 2022 re-release of White Christmas. Here is his first chart hit, Muddy Water. This reached #11 in June 1927 – but Bing's name wasn't shown on the label!
