DRC May Be Nearing The End.....

I know you're wondering what was the first song about doughnuts. It's The Doughnut Song by Burl Ives & The Men Of Song. This was the B-side of I Got A Fever In My Bones (Columbia 38765, released April 3, 1950).

At 11:10 this morning (Pacific time), the "Account Suspended" message was briefly replaced with this:

"Looks like there’s a problem with this site.

Error code: 525 No Reason Phrase.
https://siriusbuzz.com/forum/ might have a temporary problem or it could have moved.
The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments."

SiriusBuzz is now back – but for how long? And now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to try to figure out what a "No Reason Phrase" is.

We should find another site as a backup.
It doesn't need to have anything to do with satellites.
I don't have time to browse around.

If DRC has to find a new hosting service, there are several low-cost providers including Hostinger, Namecheap, IONOS, Bluehost, Dreamhost and Hustly – but the majority are examples of the adage "You get what you pay for." There is also a Hustly in the UK but it's a seller of sunglasses. This is the hosting service:

I want this site to remain just like it is. To be clear.

But there must be some way you can pay for a message board URL where the company selling it does all the work to keep it up and you just pay a fee for that convenience.

That's where it all gets expensive, and I'm certain that we're not going to be able to sustain that by crowd-funding.
Whoever would take on the responsibility of organizing that would also be putting up the advance money and dealing with forum renewal schedules, and domain renewals.

I've got too much going on to deal with more than the basic admin stuff.

Sirius Buzz gets me a 525. SSL Handashake failure:

SSL handshake failed Error code 525

Looks to me like their certs have expired.

Just curious if DRC had to move to another forum. Would the platform hosted by Xenforo have to be moved to another hosting platform or worst case scenario create a new forum and have to start all over with threads, posts, etc.

Today I discovered that all the posts made on Sirius Buzz from August 7 to August 25 – from myself, Listener, Atypical and several other members – have been removed. I have no idea why or how – and I can't send a private message to the moderator because his mailbox is full. The few times when one of my posts on DRC has been removed, a moderator explained the reason. On Sirius Buzz, 19 days of posts vanished without explanation: obituaries, political stories, sports stories, music news, business news, etc. Very strange.

Sorry to say that our days are indeed coming to a close in the near future.

I was able to talk to Taylor a few days ago about our fate.
Even though he hasn't visited the DRC in several years, he's been paying the bills for us and hasn't really minded it. (Call it old times sake or whatever.)
It's not really about the money, but more that it's become a hassle for him. He keeps getting emails from some loon that got banned for registering multiple accounts, and all kinds of other bogus messages.

He doesn't have his tech guy that took care of the server side of things for us to help with transferring accounts and whatnot either.

Our call got cut short, so I didn't get all of the answers, but it's clear that we need to find a new home on our own and pretty soon.
The last thing that he said was that he'll just let the current payments run out and not renew. I've been meaning to check back in with him, but I've been swamped lately.

From my side, I spend a lot of my time here screening spammers and foreign web traffic.
Only 5 of the last 100 people that have joined weren't from Russia, China, India, Vietnam, or the like.
We get so many bogus new accounts that I've had to shut down registrations.

With all of those things in consideration, and knowing that (IMHO) we don't have a chance at crowd funding for more than a few months before someone gets stuck footing the bill on their own, we're better off making other plans.

So......either we find another forum fast, someone starts up one of those free forums, or we say goodbye. Aaron and I could continue to moderate a new site, but neither of us can handle the server side of things. (Neither of us will moderate a forum with politics.)

It seems to me that there must be a couple of music or pop-culture forums that have decent activity. We really don't need the satellite component anymore, but I'd think that those conversations would fit in nicely on one of those forums.

Could we move Digital Radio Central to the WordPress web content management system? We can get a basic site and domain name for $10-$20 a year and basic shared hosting for $3-$10 a month. We – yeah, I said "we' – could also talk with Charles LaRocca about merging SiriusBuzz and DRC.

We should probably decide quick. I fear that this site will drop before we decide and we will be like lost sheep trying to find each other.

I wonder how many message board communities have stayed together for 20 years? (Going back to SBS days). It’s impressive.
