Uh-Oh guys got my first Casioak today. I tried to get one a month or 2 ago back but Amazon sent me the wrong one and I returned it. It was different than this model. When I saw a full lume dial I knew it had to be mine. I hope this doesn't start an obsession with this model because things are bad enough with the Squares already.

Today is a really cool day in my watch collecting journey.

This was delivered a few weeks ago:

I have gone more Square crazy than normal. I may go into that later (I bought some really cool 40th anniversary editions) but for now I'm fixated on getting an original 1983 model. Now there are many people as insane as I so these tend to be expensive. I found a pretty good one on eBay but I will need to get a bezel for it. This is it:

View attachment 9659

It looks to be in pretty good shape for a 41 year old watch that is meant to be worn hard. It's from some guy in Morocco.

IDK, with my crazy Square obsession I just think it would be cool to have the actual watch that started it all.

You're crazy buying something from a guy in Morocco.

Say goodbye to your money.

It made it here really fast from Morocco. But as you can see it came without a bezel. So I ordered a genuine Casio replacement bezel and that finally arrived today. I also ordered a new battery for it and grease for the gasket since I was going to open it anyway to change the battery.

The bezel arrived today so I could finally put it all together.

I got the watch for $600. Now I know that's crazy but look up the original G-Shock DW-5000C that first released in April 1983. It's very rare they go for under a thousand even in really bad shape. So that got me a bit worried that it may be a fake but I'm pretty much a Square expert and from everything I could see before opening it I believe it's the real deal. The serial number is correct, all the printing is correct, the size, weight and shape are all correct.

And I confirmed it today after opening it. All the internals are exactly how they should be. The shock protection rubber pieces inside the watch all are exactly how they should be. And a big thing is how the alarm is set up. All current g shocks have a little spring that protrudes from the back of the module and touches a little pad on the inside of the screw in case back. This is not the case with the OG model. It has the spring on the screen side of the module and the crystal part of the case had a little metal strip on the interior that it connects with to make the beeping sounds. That is exactly how it is with this one. Also the module is all Casio branded. That's a lot of words to say that this thing is legit and I'm happy to be sure of it now.

Anyway, the strap and bezel are not original but they are genuine Casio replacements. The battery that was in the watch was the incorrect size so I replaced it with the correct one that should last about 10 years.

You all know how crazy I am about Squares so it makes me really happy to have the original that started it all as the newest complete member of my collection.

Check out the cute little filament bulb it uses for a light. My Pixel makes it look way better than it actually is. It's actually more of a yellow color and barely reaches the minutes.

That's crazy!

In 1983 it went for around $55.

And this first ever release was a flop. It wasn't until the next square model which was used in an ad as a hockey puck to show how tough it was that G-Shock became popular in the USA.

Where I work, I used to see a lot of other engineers with 1980s Casio watches. But they didn't buy them as "vintage" or "NOS". They bought them in the 80s when they were in college, or perhaps when they first got their jobs. And because they're such cheap, fashion-devoid people, it just never occurred to them to wear a different watch.

I really want this watch:

Citizen Eco Drive Promaster BN0169
1720838529590.png

I love the look of it, especially on the gray rubber strap I already have. I don't have any Citizen watches at the moment and I've wanted a Pomaster and this color way is just cool. I also don't have any orange dial watches.

Anyway I'm insane as is well documented in just this thread, let alone all of DRC.

Well I bought it 3 times already and returned all three. THE FREAKIN BEZEL WAS MISALIGNED ON ALL OF THEM!!! And all in slightly different ways and it drove me crazy.

Anyway this guy is selling it on eBay:

He has pics of the actual watch I'd be getting and not the stock pics Amazon had. I'm really tempted to buy it a 4th and hopefully final time.

I hope it looks better on you than on the little boy wrist in the pic.

Looks like you already bought it.

At least it ain't square. ;)
You're right. And it came today. I know the picture makes it look like the tick on the 30 minute Mark is not perfectly aligned but that's just how I took the picture. This one is perfect. It only took me buying it four times, hahaha

I hope it looks better on you than on the little boy wrist in the pic.

I hope you enjoyed the much sexier wrist shot Scotch. Feel free to save it as your desktop background or tuck it away in that folder you have with all the other pics I've posted over the years.

I opened it and already scratched the case back hah. If I did that to the bezel or crystal I would be crying right now but the case back really doesn't bother me. I just got a watch repair kit and it seems I'm doing the opposite with it so far. I wanted to see the quartz movement. As unfortunately suspected, the movement is tiny and there is a ton of open space. Knowing that just kinda bothers me but I still really dig it and think it's a very cool colorway.

I know lots of quartz watches do this but I'm a Casio boy and their movements always fill the watch case.

Speaking of Casio, I went on a bit of a square 40th anniversary buying spree about 6 weeks ago. I got 3. They are all cool (one is a skeleton quartz!!) but one has become probably my favorite of all my watches.

The GCWB5000UN-6JF

It's forged carbon so it's really strong and also really light. Sized for me the whole thing is 60 grams. I'm not exactly sure how that forging process works but as a result no 2 watches are exactly the same and I love that. And the pattern in the carbon is fun to look at. I also dig how it says Since 1983 on the dial. It has a sapphire crystal and only the super fancy Squares get that. I mean that overall kinda sucks since sapphire really isn't that expensive but it's cool that this one has it at least. Also only the fancy Squares get the applied "shock resist" badge on the top left. It's printed on every other model.

I like the blue and purple too, it makes me think of space. It Also has little flecks of opal in the carbon that shine nicely when the light hit it. You can see it a bit in the bracelet pic.

The clasp is pressed carbon as opposed to forged and it's neat to see the layers:

It's also a monocoque:

It's the only Square that is top loaded like that which is neat. Also monocoque has the word cock in it and that always makes me giggle.

On top of all that, even though this was my second most expensive watch, unlike the Master of G Square I bought a few months ago, I don't worry about scratching this one. Forged carbon is a whole lot harder to scratch than expertly polished titanium hah. I have managed to get a little blemish on the left of the bezel around where 10 o'clock would be but it doesn't bother me nearly as much as a scratch on the titanium version would.

So there's my rant. This is my current favorite watch. They make one what is uncolored, just black and gray and I'm tempted to get that one too. But I need to slow down with these fancy models.

I suspect that's because that watch only does time and date. The Casios do all sorts of stuff, so there's an extra chip or 2.

Calling a watch case a monocoque is just preposterous. The term is used for certain designs of aircraft, race cars, and boats, where the outer skin makes up the structure, and there's no internal frame. Since no watch has an internal structure, it's kind of a silly claim.

Oh that's interesting. The first monocoque G-Shock I bought was a gavitymaster, which is their version of a pilot's watch so it makes sense they'd call it that I guess.

And I never knew the term before I heard Casio use it.

Also I know you said this as a joke:

Whenever you're tempted to buy something bad with the money, order a square watch instead.

but I've actually taken it kinda to heart. I purchased way too many Squares over the past 4 months but I have been sober for 4 months and 6 days now. So while the smart move would be to save the money I'd be blowing on blow (hehehe) at least while I'm still wasting money on shit I don't need, these purchases are not actively hurting all aspects of my life.

I did something fun. I took all my quartz, non radio controlled or Bluetooth watches and set them to the correct time last night. Seeing how the average quartz is supposed to be +/- 15 seconds a month I intend to check them at the end of August to see how well they performed.

This is what I do for fun now.
