Sadchild's "high fives" (every artist I like at least five songs from)

The Trevor Rabin era was my favorite for them.
The early stuff was fantastic, and laid the groundwork for some of my favorite bands like Rush and Tool, but the more contemporary sound of the Rabin days was a lot more compelling.

Beginning with The Yes Album in '71, that and the next two albums are in my blood; The Yes Album, Fragile, and Close to the Edge. And just like Chicago did after Chicago III, they put out a live album as kind of a sorbet, to cleanse the palate between courses. Also, drummer Bill Bruford left, and he and Squire on bass were the foundation of their sound. I actually never got into their next several albums, and not surprisingly, the only song from that era that got radio airplay was Wonderous Stories.

So 90125 was new and exciting; the one time I saw them live was on that tour. And I bought the follow-up, Big Generator. Both of those albums had a bold new sound, but IMO it doesn't hold up well over time. The processed drum sound (drum machine?) and bombastic style give it a very 80's sound, ala Asia. So while I still like some of that stuff, I don't consider it to be on the same level as the music from those older 3 albums.

While I prefer 90125 and Big Generator (and a few songs from Union), this is quite true. The early Yes is certainly more groundbreaking but it's very unpolished to my grew-up-in-the-80s ears. Too far in the other direction.

Young MC

Genre: hip hop

Discovered: MTV, "Bust A Move"

Other: If it weren't for me getting exposed to his (very unsuccessful) fourth album, which I like from start to finish, he wouldn't be on this list. Because aside from that I only like 3 of his songs. He's talented fun and witty, but it doesn't come through in most of his albums for some reason. BTW I loved Flea's appearance in the "Bust" song and video. Those stuffed animals pants are the bomb!

HIGH FIVE:

1. Bust A Move
2. On & Poppin
3. You Ain't Gotta Lie To Kick It
4. Pick Up The Pace (1990)
5. Freakie

Whitesnake

Genre: hair metal, hard rock

Discovered: FM? Probably "Still Of The Night"

Other: In '88 I listened to their self-titled album a hundred times. I've listened twice since 1989. For whatever reason, I completely lost interest in their sound. I enjoyed their two big singles from the follow-up for a month or two, but aside from that, their sound didn't age well with me. But I can still get into these five songs if they pop up on my SXM once in a while.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Still Of The Night
2. Fool For Your Loving
3. Here I Go Again
4. Is This Love
5. The Deeper The Love

Ahh, my first ever concert. McNichols Arena, 1989, Easter Sunday of all days. I was 14. Great White opened the show. My next concert, oddly enough wouldn't be until years later.

Winger

Genre: hair metal

Discovered: MTV, "Seventeen"

Other: First album was great (a little dated now), second album had a couple songs I liked, DOA by album three. No idea why Mike Judge decided Stuart should wear a Winger shirt. Maybe it was because Lars Ulrich was throwing darts at a photo of Kip in the "Nothing Else Matters" video a year earlier?

HIGH FIVE:

1. Seventeen
2. Madalaine
3. Hungry
4. Easy Come Easy Go
5. Hangin' On

Maybe THE original band from Colorado? (Rock, anyway). Sister went to high school with Kip Winger.

As much crap as they got, Reb Beach could shred on the guitar! And Kip morphed into a classical composer later in life.
