The Musical Instrument Thread

Play what's comfortable, and sounds good to you. I've got light strings on my acoustics, forget what size since I don't play them often. I keep 9s on my electrics, because it was easier on the guitars I learned on that had higher action, and I never broke the habit. I thought about going with 10s last year, but didn't want to set up my guitars again to compensate. I was a little surprised that my ESP came with 9s on it from the factory.

The plan is to take it in tomorrow, no appointment needed so I'll just walk in anytime. (When they're open of course, wouldn't want to get arrested).

I'll report on the playability after I've played it after the fact.

Oh delays, I had a little co-pay at the doctor's office take my money this week, no setup this time around. Maybe next week or the week after. Life and not living out of a van/pushing up daisies in the near future seems to get in the way.

Question to all:

What's your song of choice?
Someone hands you an acoustic guitar and ask you to play something.

Even though I don't play nearly as often as I used to, I can still play a decent version of The Beatles "Blackbird".

I can't do that. Knowing songs is a weakness of mine, which I attribute to ADD. I like to learn bits and pieces of things--the cool part in this song, the opening riff of that song--and move on when I get bored. Squirrel!

I always revert to Fly By Night. I can do all of it but the solo, but since nobody can sing it, it's kind of a moot point. I'll give Closer To the Heart a go, but usually forget what's going on after the electrics kick in. Hole Hearted is an acoustic fall back too, but I haven't played that in some time.

Maybe it's this thread, idk, but I'm feeling inspired to play guitar again after a 7 or 8 year hiatus.

A decade ago, I had meticulously put together four binders full of quality tablature (one for bass guitar).
I grabbed the main book of tabs today, and the songs started coming back to me real quick.

If you guys get a chance, "Across the Universe" by the Beatles can be played quite nicely, from the little picked intro to the strummed chords.

OK, first is the Toledo Toothpick. Formerly a 1983 or 84 Stratocaster. The neck had been replaced with a G&L and it had been repainted before I bought it. That paint job was crappy, and it had some dings in it. so I decided to modify it back in 91. I removed the fulcrum whammy, added a Leo Qwan Badass bridge, deepened the lower cut away (I shouldn't have done that), and then repainted it. Used the wrong paint, and it blistered up like crazy. I didn't touch it again till a couple of months ago. Stripped it, fixed a couple of other things, and put in new pickups, guts, and everything. I gave it a new paint job too. Airbrushed martini olive on a black pearl background. It can use a bit more work on the finish, but it will do for now. It plays really well. The action is very low and the neck is pretty slick. The intonation needs a little adjustment, but that shouldn't be hard with this bridge.View attachment 1629
Next up: my new ESP. This is just killer. It's lighter than I expected, and it almost plays itself. As a bonus, it came with the split coil pickups. Those are usually on the next model up. View attachment 1630

You need to vacuum.

Tell us about the design on the Toledo toothpick! I'm intrigued.

Also, sweet.
Ha! I do need to run the swiffer around in there. I didn't notice until after I uploaded. The flash made it stand out. I was already starting to practice too late to bother to tidy up for you filthy animals. (The Mrs would be mortified.)

Design.......originally, (back in 91) I was going to paint something really detailed like a brick wall with one missing, and a pair of eyes peeking through, or something goofy like that. After all that time, I knew I didn't stand a chance of pulling it off, or finishing it, so I simplified. I may have had a martini in hand when I noticed the similarity between a toothpick and the maple guitar neck. I made a recessed wood pickguard back in 91, and a big part of the olive shape was already perfectly lined up with the joints. I thought I could handle an oval and a blob.

Back in 91, I deepened the lower cut away to make it easier to reach the high frets. Shouldn't have cut that far into the body. The proportions are goofy. I adjusted it a bit this time. It's better than it was, but still odd looking. I stripped the paint that blistered, sanded, sanded more, primed, sanded, then broke out the airbrush I haven't used since 93 or so. Painted it black, added the olive, then painted the black pearl around the olive.

I put all new guts in it. I figured that I don't want to take it apart again. Seymour Duncan Screamin Demon pickups, both double coil and tapped, so I can get more of a traditional Strat single coil sound for jazzy and blues songs. 2 volumes and no tone. (I rarely adjust tone anyway.)

I took out the fulcrum bridge back in 91. I wanted an axe I could quickly do alternate tunings on, or raise the bridge a bit for slide stuff. The bridge that was in it was already a replacement, it had a $50 price sticker on it. I had to re-set the neck to adjust the scale length to compensate for the new bridge location. It's about 3/8 of an inch farther out than it used to be. Adjusted the neck tilt, recessed the bridge a smidge to get the strings closer to the body and pickups.

3 cans of clear polyurethane, then sanded all the way up to 2500 grit sandpaper, nthe polished with 3 levels of rubbing compound to a high gloss finish. I should put another couple of coats of clear on still. The primer didn't fill all of the wood grain the way I expected, so it has some grain texture. It's not what I wanted, but it has it's own character, and I'm not about to repaint for that.

We're playing another garage party next weekend, so I may tinker with it again after that. But at least it's alive again. The action is crazy low, and it sounds really good. The frets are mediums, and I'm used to jumbos, so that's weird, but the neck is beefy and fits my hand nicely.

I put more money and time into it than it's worth, but it was fun to do, and I have another good guitar in the collection to use.

Probably something nice and easy like Free Fallin' from Tom Petty or Ring of Fire from Johnny Cash. One of the neighbor's kids wants me to learn 'Signs' from Five Man Electrical Band. Which according to Ultimate-Guitar looks fairly easy.

The guitar that I sold on eBay to pay for my keyboard arrived safe and sound. No smashed body, no broken headstock. I wanted to like that guitar but we never really bonded. Now I can pay the missus for the keyboard and still have $67 for a new pick pickguard and ebony bridge pins for my acoustic, and new strings on my bass! #capitalism

Gotta love capitalism!
The Mrs doesn't harp on me for spending money. We pay our bills, put some into savings, and don't live extravagantly or beyond our means. But after buying my ESP, she might give me a look for buying the Reverend hollow body I'm looking at......until.....we booked another wedding shoot for next month. $$$$. After the Reverend, there isn't anything else I'm looking for.

Unless I find a Steinberger L with the graphite body.....
