As of today, the Los Angeles Times sports section has a new look. Sports editor Iliana Limón Romero says the sports section "will take on the look and feel of a daily sports magazine, with a different design showcasing our award-winning reporting and photography. You no longer will see box scores, standings and traditional game stories, but those will be replaced by more innovative reporting, in-depth profiles, unique examinations of the ways teams operate, investigations, our distinct columnists' voices, elite photography and more."

Scores and standings can still be viewed on the Times app and website but they no longer appear in the newspaper's sports section. I expect the Times will lose a lot of subscribers over this idiotic decision.

The Times no longer has stock listings, movie listings, a television log, horse racing reports or sports scores and standings. Over the years, the Times has gotten thinner and thinner. Pretty soon it will no longer be a newspaper. It will be a pamphlet.

Why even bother publishing? I would not want a paper of just opinions and articles.

When was the last time you looked at a newspaper for sports scores, movie times, or the weather?
People grab their phones first for that stuff.

Print is dead.

Denver has one major newspaper left, and even it's owned by a private equity company. They have a few independent papers but they're mostly online (and quite good).

I don't remember the last time I read an actual newspaper (I subscribe off and on to Washington Post, New York Times and WSJ but they're all online) or listened to any local radio station not affiliated with NPR.

I haven't read a newspaper for anything. But if I was going to, I would want that. I am for the no-publishing idea though.

For me, print is not dead. I subscribe to a real newspaper and several real magazines with words and pictures printed on real paper. I buy real books with words printed on real paper. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go to the Times website or the ESPN website and check today's baseball scores.

Our main newspaper moved most of their “leadership” to Pittsburgh, and has reduced their local pool of reporters, writers, and photographers substantially. They still print, but I think it’s 3 days a week and Sunday. I was never a big fan anyway.

There is the free newspaper thing that I actually read. (Circular? Underground rag?) It’s much more interesting with more stuff that I care about like local happenings, arts, and restaurants. Theres a bit of local politics, and other news too.

Yes, gotta keep up on Toledo politics. You can keep track of that lady mayoral candidate. Very important.

I guess construction updates on I-75 could also be important ... although always the same ... "under construction".

We have a couple of those. This gets put in our mailbox every week.

It's a county-wide newspaper, and it generally lists events in the area. But it also has local news and human interest stories and editorials. I like getting it, because it's like one of those publications you get when you're in a vacation spot, and it makes me feel fortunate to be here. It's also online.

There's also a more serious weekly newspaper for our town and districts, called The York Weekly. Our neighbors (the doctors) subscribe; when they're away, I'll sometimes grab it off their driveway.

And finally, our town's Parks & Rec department sends this out in the spring and fall. It's in a high-quality magazine form.

It's probably funded by revenue from the summer program registration fees that parents cough-up to send their kids here.

My town had a weekly paper about the garden club's latest tulips, progress on road construction, the dates and times of the elementary school performances of Oh Calcutta, and where to replace the busted trash can you accidentally ran over after midnight.

Then it ceased publication.

Then some wackjob started it back up, filling it with extremist political views mixed in with the dates and times of middle school brass band's tribute to 2 Live Crew.

Actual text from the latest edition: "The Washington Post on March 24, 2023, reported that 550 Americans were reported missing in Mexico up from 324 three years ago. If that many Americans were missing in the Middle East, we would be all over it. So why do we leave them behind because they are in Mexico?"

Exactly the kind of hometown coverage I'm always looking for....

I saw one of those in Scanton. Front page article going in depth about how Trump should still be president and several other articles like that mixed in with local events and stuff.

For the many years we lived in southern NH, we got the Carriage Towne News. And there was an old guy (whose name I forget), a veteran, who would make weekly editorials and letters to the editor. They were all extremely right-wing, often in the conspiracy theory realm, and frequently racist. But the guy was one of the key members of the publication, so there was no stopping him.

It happens that he's (or was) also the organizer of the big Raymond NH 4th of July parade. And when I was president of the board for a NH community band, I'd have to work with him to arrange our participation in the parade. Although for a time, I didn't know the connection.

She might have died......There haven't been any crazy alerts in quite some time.

Maybe she's back on her meds. :dunno1

No need to read any updates. It's a universal constant, like gravity, time, or people complaining about the Super Bowl half-time show.

Yesterday the New York Times announced it will shut down its sports department and start printing stories from the Athletic digital site, which the newspaper bought last year.
