The Lone Ranger debuted in 1933 on WXYZ in Detroit and aired nationally on the Mutual Broadcasting Network until 1956. Each episode began with Rossini's William Tell Overture and an announcer saying "A fiery horse with the speed of light! A cloud of dust and a hearty 'Hi-yo, Silver!' The Lone Ranger!" You might think it odd that Roy Rogers recorded a song about Silver – but Roy didn't own a horse then. In 1945 he bought a horse named Golden Cloud and renamed it Silver. This reached #13 in July 1938. Roy, born Leonard Slye, was 26 years old – and he was already yodeling!

In one of the community bands I played in, we had a guy who introduced the songs we were about to play, and he often had an entertaining background story. For the William Tell Overture, he defined "sophistication" as a person who can listen to that overture without thinking of the Lone Ranger.

I never watched the "Lone Ranger" but I know that music as the Lone Ranger theme.

I wonder if Mister Hectic listens to WAKT, a low-power FM station at 106.1 in Toledo. It's branded as "We Act Radio." I have a better slogan: "Who are these people?" Of the 16 artists whose songs were played in the past hour, the only one I've heard of is Betty LaVette. She had five top-40 R&B hits and she appeared in Bubbling Brown Sugar on Broadway. The Crystal Bowersox song is a remake of a 1967 Buffalo Springfield hit.

Haiku 16 – Lorraine Rose
Stubborn As A Mule – Voodoo Libido
The Undertow – Violent Bloom
419 – Thirsty Houligans
Wait Until The Sun Sets – Kyle White
Down & Out – Vengeance Day
If I – Tracy Kash
How Can You Live Without Me – Khalid Hanifi
Another Tired Song – Jeff Stewart
Wild Hounds Of St Louis – Rivermen
Secret Radio – Carolyn Striho
The Boy Won't Listen – Blue Ash
Don't Shave My Beard When I Die – Buck69
Emotionally Yours – Bettye LaVette
For What It's Worth – Crystal Bowersox
Find My Way – Corndaddy

I just had dinner with a friend in Newburyport MA, where the proprietor has a New Orleans connection. The place was decorated for Mardi Gras, and we both had the jambalaya special. Happy Mardi Gras everybody!

You're kinda freakin me out 98.

I didn't know the station was around.
I was driving to work this morning and saw a car with a license plate that said FM 1061.
I thought that is was strange and assumed that it was a religious station.

I'm familiar with a few of the artists, but don't really follow them.
One of the guys from Thirsty Hooligans works at Reverend Guitars and is in Polka Floyd.

Weird coincidence.

I
m listening to it on-line now and there isn't much for me so far.

There is a Washington DC quartet called the Hooligans. They've released only one album that I know of – but I'm guessing the reason the Thirsty Houligans deliberately misspelled "hooligan" is so they won't be confused with the other band, especially since both bands play a lot of Celtic music and Irish folk tunes. The Thirsty Houligans have released two albums, The Holy Ground in 2013, recorded at the Cherub Ballroom in Toledo, and Rustbelt Saturday in 2015. One of their influences is Johnny Cash. Here is a live performance of Cash's 1964 top-ten country hit The Ballad Of Ira Hayes:

Here is a 1965 episode of I've Got A Secret. The second guest is Ray Newby, the world's first disc jockey. In 1909, Charles Herrold of San Jose started an experimental radio station using a high-frequency spark transmitter. People could hear it on home-made crystal radio receivers. Newby played records and was the first voice heard on the station. (Walter Winchell is credited with coining the term "disc jockey" in 1935.) That experimental radio station evolved into KCBS.

Totally random post, but today I learned that Jim Farley, CEO of Ford, is Chris Farley's cousin.

Brazilian soccer player Cássio de Jesus died March 4.. This article is in Portuguese. I want to explain the name of the team he played for, Semen Padang. It's named for its owner, PT Kabau Semen Padang, a cement company in Indarung, Padang, Indonesia. "Semen" means "cement" in Indonesian. And yeah, I can think of several funny jokes about that.

Very random. Ipecac.
Remember ipecac? They don’t sell that anymore. I was watching a movie from the 30s and W.C. Fields character said something like make sure you bring the ipecac.

When I was a kid – last century – my mom kept a bottle of ipecac in the medicine cabinet. I don't recall any of us ever using it. Ipecac is an emetic made from the dried rhizome and roots of the ipecacuanha plant. "Ipecacuanha" sounds like a word Stitch would scream.

Nope.
Don't remember it and had to google it to see what it was for.

When we were kids, if one of us got poisoned, mom would yell at us to shut up till after her programs were over.

Okay without looking it up and I'm not sure if those letters spell the word I'm saying in my head because I don't think I've ever seen it written down before but ipecac is that shit you use to make yourself vomit right?

And I don't know what it is exactly. Is it a pill? I don't think so. It's probably some sort of toothpaste like substance that you stick in your mouth.
