This exact countdown played 3 years ago. I wasn't posting on this forum yet.

40. THE SEDUCTION - JAMES LAST BAND

"Last is reported to have sold an estimated 200 million albums worldwide in his lifetime." And this is the first I've ever heard of him.

37. ONLY A LONELY HEART SEES - FELIX CAVALIERE

Reminds me of Elton John a bit

36. SET ME FREE - UTOPIA

Singing with Todd Rundgren here in Utopia is a dude named Kasim Sulton. He did a song for the Susanna Hoffs disaster The Allnighter named "No TV No Phone" with Thommy Price (featuring Elliot Easton of The Cars) under the name Price-Sulton. I loved that song at the time, but eventually forgot about it. Years later (before the internet) I couldn't find it again. Finally in 2016, I found it on YouTube! I shared it on the 80s on 8 FB page and Martha Quinn not only commented on it that day a few times, she mentioned Utopia in one of her comments. She also shared it on her own page. Here is the song I lost for 30 years. Even if you hate the song, it's worth fast-forwarding to 1:00, trust me!

28. AND THE BEAT GOES ON - THE WHISPERS

Will Smith "Miami"

#43 Korona "Let Me Be"

Looked this one up out of curiosity (as I sometimes do with songs that almost crack the top 40). There is no entry for Korona in Wikipedia (though after some digging I found this). The song dropped (to sound like Nina for a second here) 'a whopping 30 spots' the next week to #73, then dropped to #94. I did find the song on YouTube and man what a stinker!

Won't make the top 40

40. GIMME ALL YOUR LOVIN' - ZZ TOP

Odd that Mark Goodman introduced the song right away, and then at the end of his shpeel he intro'd the VJ Big 40.

23. FAITHFULLY - JOURNEY

First song I ever slow-danced to. After the dance, she went back to her friends. I couldn't find her for the rest of the night. The next day, my cousin (who was there) told me that I was leaning too far forward and she was forced to lean back awkwardly for the whole dance, so she was probably avoiding me. That's ok, she'd used so much hairspray her hair was like a wicker basket and my face was in it for the whole song. Aah, l'amour...

16. RIO - DURAN DURAN

It was at this point I had the thought 'How many freakin' artists have two songs in the top 40 this week?!'...

38. YOU ARE - LIONEL RICHIE
17. MY LOVE - LIONEL RICHIE

The Hall'N'Oats ones were back to back. First time I heard the countdown I didn't actually notice the song had changed.

#78 Todd Rundgren "Bang The Drum All Day"
#82 Wall Of Voodoo "Mexican Radio"

All of these are familiar and most are played in some consistency today on 80s radio up here (except for Weird Al). The ToddRundgren was played in the late 90s on 1 station every Friday @ 5PM like clockwork. It is my ringtone right now for calls from the office.

WAAF in Boston played (maybe still plays?) this one at the end of their 'Hillman Morning Show" each Friday. They would always sing over the line "I feel so frustrated, the boss is a jerk", changing it into some long rambling run-on sentence that got drowned out by the music. "I feel so frustrated, the boss is a bla-bla-bla-bla-ra-ra-ra-ra-ra...."

Agreed

And I agree with more than half of these listed at HuffPost, especially "Words" "Rebel Yell" and "What I Like About You".

Words almost made #40, and they're a legitimate alt band, so while it's disappointing, I'm not shocked. I agree that the other two are nuts, and I'd add "I Want Candy", and of course "New Year's Day". But "I Melt With You" is definitely the stunner, because it is such a big hit, and it peaked so poorly (barely making top 80).

Aside from 5 or 6 songs, 1988 countdowns are a vast wasteland of utter crap.

Yup.

Good 5
Okay 10
Bad 25

35. KISS ME DEADLY – LITA FORD

The song Weezer ripped off. Every time I hear the Weezer song, I sing the lines "I went to a party last Saturday night..."

33. ALPHABET ST. - PRINCE

My son started mimicking Prince (AH! UGH!) and then said 'This was a top 40?!' This song is from one of four consecutive Price albums that I thought were terrible.

32. THE VALLEY ROAD – BRUCE HORNSBY AND THE RANGE

My son said, 'This sounds like the Wii Sports Theme'.

20. MY GIRL - SUAVE

They shoulda locked him up for this atrocious cover in '88, before he could have burned that crack house down.

Won't ever make the top 40
