On Facebook just now someone posted:
Define your music taste in five artists

I think it's an interesting question.

I put: Enya, Carcass, NWA, Cure, Cat Stevens

Curious what others here would answer, if anyone's interested?
Johnny Cash, Bob Marley, Soundgarden, Tony Bennett, Pink Floyd

I'm amazed that everyone's loaded and ready to go. But maybe it's just that I'm incapable of having an answer.

I'll go with Chicago, Yes, Steely Dan, Aimee Mann, and Radiohead.

I found it hard to limit to 5. I wanted to cover 5 different aspects of my tastes not just my 5 favourite artists (Bob Segar, Queen, Eagles, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd).
I did the same. My choices represented my favorite genres as well as artists. Cash: Outlaw Country and Americana, Marley: Reggae and world music, etc.

#MeToo. If it were favorite bands I'd have had Grateful Dead in there, but I think Phish is a good representation of jam bands in general. Each of my picks is a genre I dig.

Exactly. I've long said I like everything 'from Enya to Carcass', but that only shows the length of my spectrum, not the breadth. So it was a challenge to draw a pentagon big enough to embrace all of my tastes. That's why I found it a fun exercise and wanted to pass it on.

It was posted in a 'nu metal fans' Facebook group, so a lot of people were like "Korn, Soundgarden, Limp Bizket, Metallica, Led Zeppelin" and all I could think was "that's pretty narrow". I had a feeling we wouldn't be as narrow in our tastes! And I found it interesting to see everyone's answers!

I need to rethink my answer. I pretty much listed the bands that would be biggest in my desert island playlist, not the range of my tastes. More on this after I ponder....

That's what I tend to do - overthink it. If you really picked artists that showed the breadth of your tastes, you'd probably include some that you hardly listen to.

The problem with these kinds of questions on social media, is that it results in a lot of posturing. You know, picking artists that make you look like a deep person. It's actually pretty cool that everyone here gave a quick answer; that seems more honest.

Same idea. These aren't my favorites necessarily but I do like them all. It more shows how far in each direction my tastes go, without making stuff up

Enya - as far into a classical/new age sound that I go (I also like Jim Brickman and some others)
Carcass - as heavy into metal as I go, even though I wouldn't list them in my top 40 metal bands (but I still like a good amount of their stuff)
NWA - as deep into hardcore rap as I go
Cure - since their sound is really diverse anyway (alt pop to goth), it covers alt for me
Cat Stevens - one of my favorite folk artists, shows I also like Simon & Garfunkel, etc.

I tried to make all five be very different from each other too, as best as I could, while still putting artists I don't just "kinda like" to "make a point".

Took me like 2 minutes. I'm fine with mine.

Beatles - 60's
Hall & Oates - 80's pop
Led Zeppelin - classic rock
The Cars - new wave
The O'Jays - soul music

I like how you broke it down, I'm going to copy you.

Phish - Represents all jam bands
Beatles - Represents all 60's/classic music I'm into
Jack Johnson - Singer songwriters/folk & pop
Cake - Unique rock
Nirvana - Represents all 90's music I dig
